The purpose of this study was to discriminate important variables among general self-efficacy, peer attachment, and parent-child communication that could predict internalizing problems(anxiety, depression) of Korean children of divorce. The participants were 101 children aged from 10 to 13. They completed questionnaires and discriminant function analyses were performed. The results showed that (a) the discriminant function derived from 3 variables was effective in classifying high, moderate, and low group of children's anxiety and depression, (b) parent-child communication plays a key role in predicting anxiety and general self-efficacy plays a key role in predicting depression of Korean children of divorce, (c) but peer attachment plays a significant role only to predict depression. This means that anxiety and depression of Korean children of divorce result from different kind of interactions among children's important contexts.
Purpose: This study was aimed to classify the major subjects and theme and to analyze the data collection and analysis method in research papers published in the Korean Parent-Child Health Journal of the Academic Society of Parent-Child Health since 1998. Methods: A total 152 studies published from the first edition to volume 12, number 2 were reviewed using structured analysis criteria developed by researchers; research type, research design, research subjects, research theme, data collection and analysis method. Research theme was founded 4 nursing domains. Data collection and analysis method of papers were limited to quantitative and qualitative researches. Results: One hundred papers conducted quantitative research; 79.0% used survey design. Most of the data collection and analysis method in quantitative research were self-reported questionnaire (69.4%) and parametric statistics respectively. The research subjects of sixty three papers were parent with well or child. The common domain studies was human related concepts such as raring. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that published studies have been improved and diversified, however, detailed and clear evaluation tool that assess study process and method should be developed as a way to further improve the quality of published papers in the Korean Parent-Child Health Journal.
The current and ethnic issues represented in child-rearing practices of Korean-Chinese families in YanBian, China, were studied with the participation of 7 primary caregivers (4 mothers and 3 grandmothers) of young children who were interviewed and observed in their homes. Current issues were categorized as competitive bilingual ability, expectations about third language learning (English), expectations of high academic accomplishment and early education, and economic challenges in parenting. Ethnicity issues included ethnic pride as Korean-Chinese, conflicts of ethnic education, participation in local Korean culture, and rearing the child to have the self-expressive and assertive characteristics of typical Korean children. Results were discussed in terms of understanding and supporting child-rearing of minorities and families with multi-cultural background.
Subjects in this study on causal relationships among playfulness, interactive peer play, teacher-child relationships, and creative characteristics were 286 3- to 5-year-old children. Instruments were the Rating Scale for Creative Characteristic of Preschoolers (Lee et al., 2002), Children's Playfulness Scale (Bemett, 1990), Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale (Fantuzzo et al., 1995), and Student Teacher Relationship Scale (Pianta, 1991). Results showed : (1) significant relationships among social spontaneous, cognitive spontaneous and children's humor in sub-areas of children's playfulness, friendliness in sub-areas of teacher-child relationships, play interaction in sub-areas of interactive peer play and creative characteristics. (2) Children's creative characteristics directly influenced social spontaneous, cognitive spontaneous and children's humor in sub-areas of children's playfulness and of play interaction in sub-areas of interactive peer play.
The present study focused on the potentially adverse consequences for children of martial conflict from the children's perspective. Children's perception of martial conflict was analyzed by relationship to behavior problems (assessed by the parents) and demographic variables (child's sex and age, parents' education, father's occupation, mother's employment, mother's age and family income). Children's perception of martial conflict varied by child's age and sex, parents' education, father's occupation, mother's age, and family income. On the other hand, behavior problems of children varied not by child's age and sex but by parents' education, father's occupation, family income, and mother's age. Behavior problems of children varied by child's perception of martial conflict and by frequency of martial conflict and self-blame. Correlations between children's perception of martial conflict and behavior problems varied by child's age and sex.
This study aimed to improve mother-child attachment relationship by goal-corrected partnership. The subjects of this study were three 5- to 6-year-old children with insecure attachment patterns and their mothers. The Mother-Child Attachment Intervention Program with Applied Sand-Play Therapy consisted of two steps, sand-play therapy for each mother and child for 8 sessions and three different intervention activities(activities for children only, mother education activities and mother-child cooperative activities) conducted for 12 sessions. Each of the therapy and the activity sessions ran for 40 and 80 minutes weekly. After completing the program, the mothers' representation of their parents changed positively, but the changes depended on their attachment classifications. All of the mothers' warm/responsive parenting behaviors increased despite some individual differences.
This study defined awareness of professionalism and job stress in 353 child-care teachers of children with special needs and analyzed the relative contribution of professional awareness to job stress. Teachers showed high awareness of 'ethics' and 'enthusiasm enhancing professionalism', and this awareness correlated highly with professionalism in the 'specialized knowledge and skills' sub-factors. Teachers showed high levels of stress in the 'general duty' and the 'guidance of children with special needs' categories, and this correlated highly with stress caused by 'child-care center management.' The results of canonical correlation analysis indicated that of professionalism sub-factors only the awareness of 'social services' contributed positively to job stress.
This study included 12 mothers and their 5-year-old children. Over 5 weeks, mothers participated in 2 hours filial therapy training twice a week, and 30 minutes special play at home once a week. Each mother was videotaped playing with her child and completed three self-report instruments : Parental Acceptance Scale(Porter, 1954), Parenting Stress Index(Abidin, 1990), and Child Behavior Checklist(Oh et al., 1997). These measurements were taken three times : before, immediately after, and 8 weeks after the program. Enhanced empathic interaction and parental acceptance level through filial play therapy training was maintained 8 weeks after the training. Eight weeks after the training, child's behavior problems were significantly reduced in comparison to immediately after the training.
In this study, children's representation of attachment was assessed by the Attachment Story Completion Task(Bretherton, Ridgeway, & Cassidy, 1990) administered to 101 5-to 6-year-old children(56boys, 45girls). Teacher-child relationship and social competence were evaluated by a questionnaire administered to preschool teachers. Based on the children's representation of attachment in their narrative responses to the story stems, 56.4% of the children were classified as having secure, 22.8% as insecure-avoidant, and 20.8% as insecure-disorganized attachments. Children with secure representation of attachment exhibited more social competence and fewer behavioral problems in the child-care setting than children with insecure representation of attachment. This study showed that the child's internal model of attachment formed from experience with caregiver is capable of transmitting social relationships outside the home.
This study investigated the relationship between types of attachment and social adaptation of kindergarten children. Subjects were 108 3-year-old children, their mothers, and their teachers. Results showed that children securely attached to both mother and teacher adapted better than children who were insecurely attached to both mother and teacher. Children who were securely attached to mother but insecurely attached to teacher, and children who were insecurely attached to mother but securely attached to teacher adapted better than children who were insecurely attached to both mother and teacher. This study suggests that the quality of child-mother or child-teacher attachment affects children's social adaptation with the passage of time in kindergarten.
