Micellar Effects on Intramolecular Charge Transfer Emission from Biphenylcarboxylic Acids

  • The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) phenomena of the photoexcited 2-biphenylcarboxylic acid (2BPCA) and 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid (4BPCA) have been investigated in some surfactant micellar solutions. The ICT emission of 4BPCA and 2BPCA in aqueous solution at sufficiently low pH (1-3) has been observed to be markedly quenched and blue-shifted upon addition of a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) in contrast to little change in anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and neutral Brij 35. An anionic emission band has been observed to be enhanced at expense of the ICT emission as a function of the concentration of CTAC. These results with the micellar effects on the fluorescence decay kinetics of 4BPCA suggest that formation of the ICT state of the excited acids is inhibited by CTAC-induced proton transfer as well as the decrease in the polarity and/or hydrogen-bonding ability of the micellar microenvironment entrapping the acids.

A Statistical Termodynamic Study of Phase Equilibria in Microemulsions

  • To investigate the phase equilibria and structural properties of microemulsions, we study a simple phenomenological model on the basis of the cubic lattice cell with which the oil- and water-filled cells are connected one another, respectively. The surfactant is assumed to be insoluble in both oil and water, and to be adsorbed at the oil-water interface. The Schulman condition, according to which the lateral pressure of the surfactant layer is compensated by the oil-water interfacial tension, is found to hold to good approximation in the middle-phase microemulsion. Our results show that the oil- and water-filled domains in that microemulsion are about 50-150 $\AA$ across, and depend sensitively on the curvature parameters. The phase diagram is not symmetric in this model. It may be asymmetrized intrinsically by non-equivalency of oil and water. The two- and tree-phase equilibria including critical points and critical endpoints are found.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of Cu(Ⅱ) with α-(2-benzimidazolyl)-α',α"-(N-5-nitro-2-pyridylhydrazone)-toluene has been investigated. The optimum conditions of pH, stability, concentration of ligand and surfactant were evaluated. This method is a simple and sensitive method for determination of Cu(Ⅱ) and offers a selective separation of Cu(Ⅱ) from sample solution containin- I ppm below amount of Ni(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Zn(Ⅱ) and Sn(Ⅱ). Copper was determined by measuring the absorbance of Cu(Ⅱ)-BINPHT complex extracted with benzene in Brij 58 surfactant at 410 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range 0∼2.5 μgmL-1 and the detection limit (S/N=2) is 0.06 μgmL-1. The relative standard deviation at the 0.3 μgmL-1 is 2.4% (N=7). The method was applied for the determination of Cu(Ⅱ) in various milks.

  • The transport of chromium(VI) ion from waste water through the liquid surfactant membrane containing tri-n-octylamine as a carrier, was analyzed by a slab model and was investigated through experiments. For the experiment of membrane stability, concentrations of surfactant and liquid paraffin oil were analyzed. Extraction experiments were carried out to observe the effect of system variables, such as concentrations of carrier, and initial chromium(VI) ion in external aqueous phase at $25^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that the most stable formation of liquid membrane emulsion was obtained when surfactant concentration is above 3 wt.% and liquid paraffin oil concentration is 50 vol.%. The theoretical equation on the transport of chromium(VI) ion agreed well with the experimental results.

  • Dispersion of the functionalized multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) in the polyurethane (PU) matrix and DC conductivity of the MWNT/PU composites are investigated with the oxidation conditions, the kind of surfactants and their content. First, the most optimal surfactant type and its critical micelle concentration in the MWNT suspension are determined as a cationic surfactant, benzalkonium chloride (BKC) of 0.6 wt.% to the MWNT content from DEA and FESEM results. All the MWNT oxidized under several conditions are negatively charged and functionalized with carboxylic group, whereas the degree of damage is different from oxidation conditions. In addition, each MWNT/PU composite derived from several oxidation conditions shows different DC conductivity at a characteristic MWNT content. It is found that in order to enhance DC conductivity of the polymeric composites containing the oxidized MWNT the better dispersion of MWNT should be obtained by effective functionalities and surfactant adsorption with preserving the intrinsic geometry of pristine MWNT.

혼합폐지의 탈묵효율에 미치는 지방산과 비이온성 계면활성제의 영향 (Effect of Fatty Acid and Non-ionic Surfactant on the Deinkability of Mixed Recovered Paper)

  • Recovered paper has been widely used as a main raw material of papermaking in Korea. Recycling of recovered paper helps to reduce production cost and preserve an environment. To recycle recovered paper efficiently, de-inking is a key process in recycling mills. De-inking process would be affected by various influencing factors such as the type of de-inking agent, mixed ratio of recovered paper, season, and process conditions. In this study, fatty acid and nonionic surfactant were used as the de-inking agent in froth-flotation process of mixed recovered paper. De-inking properties of mixed recovered paper were investigated according to the addition level of each chemical. Nonionic surfactant had a small effect on de-inking efficiency of mixed recovered paper due to decreased reject. As the additional level of fatty acid increases, fragmented ink particles increased and then optical properties of recycled paper decreased because fragmented ink particles adsorbed onto the fiber surface.

  • 분자내부 회합은 계면활성제계, 특히 콜로이드와 생체물질에 있어서 수소결합 중에서 매우 중요한 역할을 나타낸다. 미셀과 마이크로에멀젼을 형성하는 양친매성 계는 분자간 회합뿐만 아니라 분자내부 회합 때문에 매우 비이상적인 거동을 나타낸다. 본 연구의 목적은 계면활성제를 함유한 혼합물의 상거동을 계산하기 위하여, 내외부 분자 회합을 설명할 수 있는 수정된 베이츠만 통계역학이론과 결합된 유사화학반응 비무질도서 격자모델을 제시하는 것이다. 본 논문에서 제시된 격자모델은 알칸과 계면활성제의 실험결과를 매우 잘 설명할 수 있다.

W/O Microemulsion 세정제의 물성 및 세정성 평가 (Evaluation of Cleanness and Physical Properties of W/O Microemulsion)

  • Nonionic surfactant/water/탄화수소 오일/alcohol의 4성분계 시스템에서 12종의 조성물을 제조하여 물성 평가를 수행한 결과, 30.5-31.1 dyne/cm의 낮은 표면장력의 값과, 1.6-7.2 c.p.의 낮은 점도의 물성을 보여 산업용 세정제로서의 기본 물성을 보여주었다. 이들 조성물들이 안정한 단일상으로 존재하는 온도의 범위는 alcohol/surfactant(A/S)비의 증가에 따라 감소되는 경향을 보이고 있으나, 전체적으로는 계면활성제의 hydrophilic lipophilic balance(HLB) 값에 크게 영향을 받고 있으며, HLB 값이 높을수록 안정하게 존재하는 온도 영역이 증가되는 경향을 보여주고 있다. 그리고 각각의 조성물에 물의 함량을 증가 시켜 안정한 단일상이 유지되는 물의 최대 함유량을 측정한 결과 HLB 값이 낮은 계면활성제를 사용하였을 경우 HLB 값이 6.4인 비이온 계면활성제를 사용할 경우 22.1%까지도 물을 함유할 수 있었고, 물의 양이 증가됨에 따라서 단일상으로 존재하는 온도영역은 좁아졌다. 오염원으로 플럭스 제조에 사용되는 abietic acid에 대한 세정 효율을 UV/Visable Spectrophotometer와 FT-IR Spectrometer와 같은 분석기기를 이용하여 검토하여 본 결과, 비이온 계면활성제의 HLB 값이 낮을수록 높은 세정 효율을 보여주어, W/O microemulsion의 경우 비이온 계면활성제에 따른 세정력의 변화가 매우 큼을 확인 할 수 있었다. 그러나 A/S의 비가 증가에 따른 세정효율의 차이는 별다른 경향을 보이지 않았다. 또한 산업세정에 있어서 중요한 세정 요소로 작용하는 변수인 온도 변화와 초음파 주파수의 변화에 따른 세정효율을 측정한 결과, 온도가 높을수록 그리고 초음파의 주파수가 낮을수록 높은 세정력을 보여주었다. 세정 공정 중 린스조에서의 유분 오염물이 함유된 린스액의 유수분리 효율을 측정한 결과, HLB 값이 6.4인 비이온 계면활성제를 사용한 시스템의 경우 $25^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 85% 이상의 높은 제거 효율을 보여, 효율적인 세정 및 관리가 가능한 것으로 판단되었다.

보조계면활성제 첨가가 Alkyl Ethoxylates계 비이온 계면활성제, D-limonene, 물로 이루어진 시스템에서의 마이크로에멀젼 형성 및 세정력에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Cosurfactant on Microemulsion Formation and Cleaning Efficiency in Systems Containing Alkyl Ethoxylates Nonionic Surfactant, D-Limonene and Water)

  • Alkyl ethoxylates, 비이온 계면활성제, 물, d-limonene으로 이루어진 3성분 계에 보조계면활성제를 첨가한 경우, 단일상의 마이크로에멀젼이 보다 낮은 온도와 넓은 온도 영역에서 형성되었다. 특히 n-propanol을 LA-7 계면활성제계에 첨가할 경우 가장 넓은 온도 영역에서 단일상의 마이크로에멀젼이 형성되며, 보조계면활성제/계면활성제 비율이 0.3 이상인 조건에서 단일상의 마이크로에멀젼이 형성되기 시작하였다. 음이온 계면활성제 SDS를 첨가한 혼합 계면활성제 계의 경우, $30{\sim}65^{\circ}C$까지의 온도 영역에서 단일상의 마이크로에멀젼을 형성함으로써 비이온 계면활성제 계의 온도 변화에 따른 민감성을 저하시킬 수 있었다. 또한 형성된 단일상의 마이크로에멀젼은 $30{\sim}60^{\circ}C$의 온도 영역에서 pH와 경도에 대한 영향을 받지 않으며, 산화방지제에 대한 영향도 매우 작았다. 보조계면활성제와 첨가제 등에 대한 상평형 실험을 통하여 선정한 후보 세정제들은 $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 abietic acid에 대한 우수한 세정력을 나타내었다.
