  • Recent years, supercapacitors have been attracting a growing attention as an efficient energy storage, due to their long-lifetime, device reliability, simple device structure and operation mechanism and, most importantly, high power density. Along with the increasing interest in flexible/stretchable electronics, the supercapacitors with compatible mechanical properties have been also required. A eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metal could be a strong candidate as a soft electrode material of the supercapacitors because of its insulating surface oxide layer for electric double layer formation. Here, we report the electrochemical study on the charging/reaction process at the interface of EGaIn liquid metal and electrolyte. Numerical fitting of the charging current curves provides the capacitance of EGaIn/insulating layer/electrolyte (${\sim}38F/m^2$). This value is two orders of magnitude higher than a capacitance of a general metal electrode/electrolyte interface.

  • We investigated the effect of composition of a sulfur electrode with MWNT on the discharge behavior and cycling property of a Li/S cell. The MWNT content of a 60wt.% sulfur electrode varied from 10 wt.% to 30 wt.%. The optimum content of MWNT is 20wt.%, which shows the best cycling property. The first discharge capacity is 1166 mAh/g and decrease to the 542 mAh/g after 30th cycle. The homogeneous distribution of MWNT is an important factor for cycling properties.

  • The alloys $ZrMn_2Ni_x$ (x=0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2) as the alloys of Zr-Mn-Ni three component system were prepared and their hydrogen-storage properties and their electrochemical properties were investigated. The C14 Laves phase formed in all the alloys $ZrMn_2Ni_x$. Among these alloys $ZrMn_2Ni_{0.6}$ was activated relatively easily(after about 11 charge-discharge cycles), and had the largest discharge capacity(max. 45mAh/g). For all the alloys Zr was dissolved most easily into the 6M KOH solution. More Mn and Ni were dissolved from the $ZrMn_2Ni_{0.6}$ alloy than from the other alloys. Due to the active charge and discharge of the $ZrMn_2Ni_{0.6}$ alloys, related to the easier activation and the larger discharge capacity, Zr, Mn and Ni in this alloy were considered to be dissolved more easily into the 6M KOH solution, compared with the other alloys.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have many application points, which are field emission devices, composites, hydrogen storage, nanodevices, supercapacitor and secondary battery. The most promising application point is emitter tip mays of field emission devices. Furthermore, it may be also useful as a vacuum device for high frequency and high power. But, there are some obstacles to fabricate carbon nanotube field emission device. One is that CNTs grown by CVD method has weak adhesion with substrate and the other is non-uniform length of them. These problems are very crucial in aging property and reliability of device in the field emission.

  • A pressure-based, unstructured finite volume method has been applied to couple the chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics and to capture effectively and accurately the steep gradient flame field. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by two methodologies including the pressure-correction algorithm and the projection scheme. A stiff, operator-split projection scheme for the detailed nonequilibrium chemistry has been employed to treat the stiff reaction source terms. The conservative form of the governing equations are integrated over a cell-centered control volume with collocated storage for all transport variables. Computations using detailed chemistry and variable transport properties were performed for two laminar reacting flows: a counterflow hydrogen-air diffusion flame and a lifted methane-air triple flame. Numerical results favorably agree with measurements in terms of the detailed flame structure.

  • Mass production of graphene-based materials, which have high specific surface area, is of importance for industrial applications. Herein, we report on a facile approach to produce thermally modified graphene oxide (TMG) in large quantities. We performed this experiment with a hot plate under environments that have relatively low temperature and no using inert gas. TMG materials showed a high specific surface area (430 $m^2g^{-1}$). Successful reduction was confirmed by elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetic analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The resulting materials might be useful for various applications such as in rechargeable batteries, as hydrogen storage materials, as nano-fillers in composites, in ultracapacitors, and in chemical/bio sensors.

  • Carbon nanotubes have been intensively investigated for its fundamental and technical importances. Structural diversities and the related diverse physical properties with large aspect ratios are fascinating, For instance carbon nanotubes are metal and semiconductors depending on its chirality and furthermore the band gap can be tailored by the diamters. Several issues on its fundamental properties have been discussed. We will review some fundamental problems for band structures, molecular quantum wires, homojunctions, single electron tunneling, and quantum conductance. Several issues related to syntheis of carbon nanotubes including arc discharge, chemical vapor deposition, laser ablation will be extentively discussed. We will further review the applicability of carbon nanotubes on resonator, nanobalance, FET-type transistor, field emission displays electrode for secondary battery and hydrogen storage.

  • Silicon nitride films were deposited at $100^{\circ}C$ by using the catalytic chemical vapor deposition technique. The source gas mixing ratio, $R_N=[NH_3]/[SiH_4]$, was varied from 10 to 30, and the hydrogen dilution ratio, $R_H=[H_2]/[SiH_4]$, was varied from 20 to 100. The breakdown field strength reached a maximum value at $R_N=20$ and $R_H=20$, whereas the resistivity decreased in the same sample. The relative permittivity had a positive correlation with the breakdown field strength. The capacitance-voltage threshold curve showed an asymmetric hysteresis loop, which became more squared as $R_H$ increased. The width of the hysteresis window showed a negative correlation with the slope of the transition region, implying that the combined effect of $R_N$ and $R_H$ overides the interface defects while creating charge storage sites in the bulk region.
