  • The phosphor and ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) films for video phone tube (VPT) were simply prepared by the screen printing and thermal transfer methods. The increasing order of thermal firing of acrylic binder for phosphor and ITO was M6003 < M6664 < A/A 1919 < M500l < M670 1 and all mass of binders were perfectly decomposed at lower temperature than $400^{\circ}C.$ After thermal firing of phosphor paste, the residual of binder on the surface of phosphor could not be found by SEM. Aerosil as thickner provides the thixotropy property for phosphor paste but decrease the brightness of phosphor screen as residual after thermal firing. Since the thixotropy of M5001 binder without aerosil was shown and the storage modulus of phosphor paste by increasing the angular frequency was not nearly changed and the decrease of the storage modulus of phosphor paste by increasing the strain was remarkably shown. It was possible to prepare the phosphor paste which was predominant in the plate separation and the reproduction of pattern after the screen printing. Since the addition of dispersing agent to improve the printing process decreases the electrical conductivity and light transmission of ITa film, it could be found to be necessary the development of binder for phosphor paste that decreases the amount of dispersing agent possibly and does not use the aerosil as additive.

  • A series of experiment was conducted to evaluate basic performances of low-pH, anti-washing grouts incorporating gypsum which applied for reinforcing underwater cavities in limestone- grounds. Various types of mix proportions were designed and the fluidity, strength and environmental impact of these mixtures were evaluated. The flowability was evaluated under two conditions, i.e., flows without and with pressing, respectively. Strength was measured for the hardened mixtures fabricated under conditions of air and water injections. The environmental impacts including the pH of the suspension and the suspended solids concentration for the mixtures were evaluated. The low pH of fresh mixture suspension, below than 10, was achieved by incorporation of gypsum. The mix proportions of cement-quartz powder-gypsum binders and chemical agents resulted in mortar natural flow 7-10 cm and uniaxial compressive strength 4 MPa were derived.

  • Due to the physical-chemical characteristics of some bottom ash (BA), there are technical, economic and environmental limitations to find a destination that will add value to it. In Brazil, this residue is eventually used for filling coal extraction pits or remains in sedimentation ponds, creating a susceptible panorama to environmental issues. The geopolymers binders are one of the alternatives to the proper use high amounts of these materials. In this work, geopolymeric binder pastes were produced with BA mixed to activators with different alkali contents (expressed as %Na2O), as well as the incorporation of soluble silicates (Ms content). The production of binary geopolymeric pastes based on the use of two industrial wastes: fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and aluminum anodizing sludge (AAS), was also assessed. The content in mass of BA/FCC and BA/AAS ranged from 100/0, 90/10; 80/20 and 70/30. Systems with soluble silicates as activator in a molar ratio SiO2/Na2O of 1.0 (Ms = 1.0) and Na2O content of 15%, showed the best results of mechanical strength (42 MPa at day 28th). The improvement is up to 5X when compared to NaOH based systems. For systems with partial replacement of BA of 10% of AAS and 20% of FCC (80/20), the presence of soluble silicates was also effective to increase compressive strength.

  • Polymer-modified cement is the composite material made by partially replacing and strengthening the cement hydrate binders of conventional mortar with polymeric modifiers such as polymer latexes and redispersible polymeric modifiers. It is known that the addition of polymer to cement mortar leads to improved quality, which would be expected to have a high chemical resistance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the improved chemical resistance, such as low permeability and low ion diffusivity, of the polymer-modified cement as a solidification agent for the radwaste. First, polymer-modified cement specimens by latex modification were prepared according to the polymer content from 0% to 30% to select the optimized polymer content. At those specimens, the water-to-cement (W/C) ratio was maintained to 33% and 50% respectively. After the much curing time, the structural integrity of specimens was evaluated through the compressive strength test and the porosity evaluation by the water immersion method. From the results, 10% of the polymer content at 33% of the W/C ratio was shown to have the most improved quality. Finally, the leaching test referredfrom ANS 16.1 for the specimens having the most improved quality was conducted. Dedicated specimens for the leaching test were then mixed with radioisotopes of $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ at the specimen preparation.

  • As a part of studies to lower the infrared (IR) emissivity from the surface of exhaust nozzle in the turbo jet engine, stainless steel plate was coated with copper particle/meta-aramid resin composites and the IR emissivity of the plate were investigated. Binders of filler particles based on synthetic polymers generally undergo thermal decomposition before $300^{\circ}C$. It was found that the meta aramid resin was thermally stable after the test at $320^{\circ}C$, confirming the excellent thermal stability. Contents of copper particles in the composites were varied from 0 to 70% by volume. It was observed that the copper particle/meta aramid resin composites showed good adhesion after the tests at $320^{\circ}C$. The specimen coated with the composite containing 50 vol% of copper particles showed the lowest IR emissivity, 0.6, at $320^{\circ}C$.

  • The landfill gas produced in landfill is generally made up of methane(CH4) and carbon dioxide(CO2) of more than 90%, with the remainder made up of hydrogen sulfide(H2S). However, separate pre-treatment facilities are essential as hydrogen sulfide contained in landfill gas is combined with oxygen during the combustion process to generate sulfur oxides and acid rain combined with moisture in the atmosphere. Various desulfurization technologies have been used in Korea to desulfurize landfill gas. Although general desulfurization processes apply various physical and chemical methods, such as treatment of sediment generation according to the CaCO3 generation reaction and treatment through adsorbent, there is a problem of secondary wastes such as wastewater. As a way to solve this problem, a biological treatment process is used to generate and treat it with sludge-type sulfide (S°) using a biological treatment process. In this study, as a basic study of technology for utilizing the biological treatment by-products of hydrogen sulfide in landfill gas, an experiment was conducted to use the by-product as a mixture of concrete. According to the analysis of the mixture concrete strength of sulfur products, the mixture of sulfur by-products affects the strength of concrete and shows the highest strength value when mixing 10%.

  • In this paper, a ferrosilicon by-product was evaluated to confirm the feasibility of recycling it as supplementary cementitious material of ordinary Portland cement in concrete. Three different levels of replacement ratio (10 %, 20 % and 30 % of total binder) were applied to find which is the most beneficial to be used as a binder. Ferrosilicon concrete was initially assessed at setting time and compressive strength. Durability was evaluated by the resistance to chloride penetration test(RCPT) and alkali-silica reaction(ASR) with a comparison to silica fume concrete due to their similarity in chemical composition. The porosimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy give information on the microstructural characteristics of the ferrosilicon concrete. It was found that 10 % ferrosilicon concrete has higher strength while 20 %, 30 % have lower strength than OPC concrete. However, chemical resistance to chloride attack is higher when replacement is increased. Compared to silica fume, the durability of ferrosilicon might be less efficient however, it is obviously beneficial than OPC. High SiO2 content in ferrosilicon results in producing more C-S-H gel which could make denser pore structure. Most of the risk of alkali silica reaction to silicate binders through length change tests was less than 0.2 %, and both mortar using ferrosilicon and silica fume showed better resistance to alkali silica reaction as the substitution rate increased.Reuse of industrial waste rather than producing highly refined additives might reduce environmental load during manufacture and save costs.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of rape stalk (RAS) as a raw material for the production of solid bio-fuels. RAS was immersed in an aqueous solution with acetic acid concentration of 1 percent, The content of reducing sugars separated from the RAS was analyzed. Glucose showed the highest content followed by xylose, galactose, arabinose and mannose. The immersed and non-immersed RAS were used for producing pellets with a pilot-scaled flat-die pellet mill. Bulk density and calorific values of the pellets improved with the use of the immersed RAS and the addition of wood particles. The values exceeded the minimum requirements for the A-grade of non-woody pellets (≧600 kg/m3 & ≧ 14.5 MJ/kg) designated by the ISO. Ash content of the pellets reduced with the immersion of RAS and the value satisfied the A-grade level (≦6.0%) of the ISO standard. The durability of the immersed RAS-based pellets was much higher than that of non-immersed IRS-based pellets, and the values were increased with the addition of wood particles. However, the durability did not meet the acceptance level for the B-grade of non-woody pellets (≧96.0%) designated by the ISO. These results suggested that the addition of binders in the production of non-woody pellets using an RAS immersed in acetic acid-based aqueous solution is required for the commercialization of the pellets.
