  • A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation analysis code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. For closing the problem of thermal analysis, Arrhenius' equation and Zvyagin's ablation model are used. The moving boundary problem are solved by remeshing-rezoning method. For simulation of complicated thermal protection systems, this method is integrated with a three-dimensional finite-element thermal and structure analysis code through continuity of temperature and heat flux.

  • The full-scale compartment fire tests were carried out to evaluate the characteristics of fire resistance of window material under actual fire conditions. The room size used for full-scale room fire tests was 4 by 3.8 m with 2.4 m high ceiling. The windows with PVC, Aluminum and AL+Wood frame materials were established, sofa and mattress were used as fire sources. The window contained pair glasses with the air between 6 mm glasses. Temperatures at total 32 points in the room were measured to find the temperature distribution in the room fire. It is examined that thermal effects on window frame materials such as charring, distortion, melting, structural collapse, and other effects.

  • Fire characteristics can be analyzed more realistically by using more accurate material properties related to the fire dynamics and one way to acquire these fire properties is to use one of the inverse property analyses. In this study the genetic algorithm which is frequently applied for the inverse heat transfer problems is selected to demonstrate the procedure of obtaining fire properties of the solid charring material with relatively simple chemical structure. The thermal decomposition on the surface of the test plate is occurred by receiving the radiative energy from external heat sources, and in this process the heat transfer through the test plate can be simplified by an unsteady 1-D problem. The inverse property analysis based on the genetic algorithm is then applied for the estimation of the properties related to the reaction pyrolysis. The input parameters for the analysis are the surface temperature and mass loss rate of the char plate which are determined from the unsteady 1-D analysis with a givenset of 8 properties. The estimated properties using the inverse analysis based on the genetic algorithm show acceptable agreements with the input properties used to obtain the surface temperature and mass loss rate with errors between 1.8% for the specific heat of the virgin material and 151% for the specific heat of the charred material.

  • A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation simulation code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. For closing the problem of thermal analysis, Arrhenius' equation and Zvyagin's ablation model are used. The moving boundary problem and endothermic reaction in thermal decomposition are solved by rezoning and effective specific heat method. • This study is about fire resistance performance of wood framed lightweight wall including a middle lintel as a traditional wall form in Korea. The target wall is non-loadbearing system which constructed with $38{\times}89$ mm ($2"{\times}4"$) wood frame and fireproof gypsum board covering, including a middle lintel made of $150{\times}150$ mm section glue-laminated timber. As a test results, all specimens have showed fire resistant performance over 90 minutes and tests were maintained until flame occuring on Specimen-l, 2, 3 at 91 min, 97 min and 98 min respectively. Fire resistance of the heat side gypsum board was 45 minutes and charring rate of middle lintel was equivalant with that of usual timber. The wood stud inside wall system showed relatively quick combution characteristic when exposed to high temperature with no temperature rising delaying time caused by moisture evaporation because of the dehydration preceded during the early period of fire side gypsum board resist to heat.

  • This study was conducted to develop effective manufacturing methods of a total mixed ration(TMR) composed of broiler litter(BL) and bakery by-product(BB) for ruminants. Five experiments included a small-scaled manufacture of TMR using a deepstacking method(Exp. 1), its pelletization(Exp. 2), its field-scaled manufacture(Exp. 3), a field-scaled manufacture using an ensiling method(Exp. 4), and a mixing process of deepstacked BL and BB prior to feeding(Exp. 5). BL and BB were mixed at a ratio which makes total digestible nutrients of the TMR 69%. For each experiment, temperature, appearance and physico-chemical properties were recorded and analyzed. The chemical composition data revealed that the mixture of BL and BB showed nutritionally additive balance which resulted from a considerable increase(P<0.05) of organic matter and a desirable decrease(P<0.05) of protein and fiber up to the requirement level for growing ‘Hanwoo’ steers. Deepstacking of BL and BB in Exp. 1 and 3 resulted in a sufficient increase of stack temperature for pasteurization, little chemical losses, appearance of white fungi on the surface, and partial charring due to excess stack temperature. For Exp. 2, its pelleting, which was successful using a simple, small-scaled pelletizer, resulted in a little loss(P<0.05) of organic matter and an increase(P<0.05) of indigestible protein(ADF-CP). Ensiling the mixture in Exp. 4 made little effect on chemical composition; however, one month of the ensiling period was not enough for favorable silage parameters. Deepstacking BL alone in Exp. 5 tended(P<0.1) to decrease true protein : NPN ratio and hemicellulose content and increase ADF-CP content due to the heat damage occurred. Deepstacking or ensiling of BL-BB mixtures and simple incorporating of BB into deepstacked BL prior to feeding could be practical and nutrients-preservative methods in TMR manufacture for beef cattle, although ensiling needed further hygienic evaluation.

  • A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation analysis code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques have been used to characterize the thermal decomposition constants for Arrhenius parameters. Two heterogeneous reactions involving carbon and the oxidizing species of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ are considered and determined by Zvyagin's ablation model and kinetic constants. The moving boundary problem and mesh moving are solved by remeshing-rezoning method in MSC-Marc-ATAS program. The difference between the calculated and experimental value of char and ablation thickness is up to 20%. For the performance prediction of thermal protection systems, this method will be integrated with a three-dimensional finite-element thermal and structure analysis code through the real time sensing of in-depth temperature and heat flux.

  • Anatomical characteristics of black and white charcoal of Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica manufactured by a Korean traditional kiln were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. In both charcoal, the earlywood vessels shrank in tangential direction, whereas the other cells didn't change. However, in the case of latewood vessels, black charcoal did not show tangential direction shrinkage, but white charcoal did. The wood fiber were changed severly in shape due to the excessive shrinkage. Tyloses in early wood vessel were still shown unchanged shape in both charcoals. Cell wall of ray parenchyma was observed and their shapes were severly distorted. Voids between ray parenchyma were observed in white charcoal, which maybe due to high temperature in white charcoal. Moreover, lumen diameters in the uniseriate ray and multiseriate ray were decreased at the high charring temperature. These results showed that the low charcoal yield of the white charcoal compared to the black charcoal was caused by decrease of cell dimensions as well as loss of wood components associated with the carbonization temperature.
