  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SPS5) processed shot peening. The fatigue crack growth tests were carried out in the environment of the room temperature md low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$ $-100^{\circ}C$ and $-150^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) were decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It was shown that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature are considerable higher than those of mom temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature and low temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$,$-100^{\circ}C$, and $-150^{\circ}C$, in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I)was increased but stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to decrease temperature. It is assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerably higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • Plate-fin heat exchanger is a kind of compact heat exchangers with a good performance in heat transfer. It is widely used in various engineering fields such as aerospace, chemical and biomedical industries. Quantitative and qualitative flow visualization study were performed using the water model of commercial plate-fin heat exchanger with header angles of $30^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number was 100. Conventional digital particle image velocimetry was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields of the header region and the flow visualization using dye injection and hydrogen bubble method were applied to capture the qualitative flow characteristics. The results showed the existence of separation flow region at the junction area and the bottom wall of the exit region.

  • This paper investigates the effects of outdoor pressure fluctuations on natural ventilation through an opening on a building envelope. The ventilation airflow rate depends on the magnitude and the period of the pressure fluctuations, the size of the opening relative to the space volume, and the resistance characteristics of the opening. Non-dimensional parameters have been derived, which determine indoor pressure responses due to outdoor pressure fluctuations. The flow regions are categorized into (1) synchronized region, (2) opening resistance region, and (3) transition region depending on the non-dimensional parameter derived. Pressure fluctuations and flow characteristics are investigated numerically using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method.

  • The I-V characteristics of the n-channel offset gated poly-Si TETs have been systematically investigated in order to analyse the effects of offset region. The on currents are reduced due to the series resistance by the offset length and there is no kink phenomenon in offset devices. The off currents of the offset gated TFTs are remarkably reduced to 10$^{-12}$ A independent of gate and drain voltage because the electric field is weakened by the increase of the depletion region width near the drain region. It is shown that the offset regions behave as a series resistance and reduce lateral and vertical electric field.

  • This paper presents the result of a study on the distribution characteristics of salt contaminants in the west coast region, from Inchon to Yearsoo, of South Korea. To evaluate the distribution characteristics of salt contaminants, we had measured the equivalent salt deposit density(ESDD) with brush wiping method for thirteen month(from May 1999 to June 2000). Under the consideration on the measuring interval and method, normalization method was applied for the ESDD data. Besides the measurement, the chemical analysis (chromatography) was carried to investigate the relationship, between the electrical property and the amount of specific ingredient, such as sodium, magnesium and chloride. From the result, we could get the representative value of contamination for each site and distribution characteristics of salt contaminants with the distance from sea in the west coast.

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk on friction characteristics in various sliding conditions were investigated. AISI52100 steel ball was used for the substrate of coated ball specimens, which were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1(m in coating thickness. AISI1045 steel was used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of two materials, the tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitrogen environment to avoid oxidation. From the test results, the frictional characteristic between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear tract of counter-body and this layer caused friction transition and high friction. And the adhesive wear occurred from steel disk to TiN coated ball caused the formation of oxide layer on counter parts between the two materials.

  • In this work, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using $N_2-diluted$ and Oxygen-enriched coflow hydrogen diffusion flames. The effect of flame temperature on the characteristics of the formed $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was investigated. The measured maximum centerline temperature of the flame ranged from 2,103 K for oxygen-enriched flame to 1,339 K for $N_2-diluted$ flame. The visible flame length and the height of the main reaction zone were characterized by direct photographs. The characteristics of synthesized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were analyzed by SEM and TEM images. From these images, it was evident that the formed nanoparticles were divided into two sorts. In the higher temperature region, over the 1,700 K, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles having spherical shapes with diameters about 60 nm were synthesized. In the lower temperature region, below the 1,600 K, the diameters of formed nanoparticles having unclear boundaries were ranged from 35 - 50 nm.

  • An experimental study for characteristics of soot were conducted at the post-flame region in jet diffusion flames, where carbon dioxide was used as additives in oxidizer stream. Light-extinction method was performed using He-Ne laser with wave length at 632.8nm for the measurement of relative soot density and soot volume fraction with dimensionless extinction coefficient, $K_e$ and mass specific extinction coefficient, ${\sigma}_s$. To increase of resolution, laser light was modified for sheet-form using concave, convex lenses and slit. C/H ratio was introduced for quantitative analysis of soot growth which is expressed by carbonization and dehydrogen. Also transmission electron microscopy(TEM) was used for observation of morphological shape. The results show that the relative soot density in the post-flame region was lower when carbon dioxide was added in oxidizer stream because of reduction of flame temperature.
