A study on the chronology of children's cartoon focused on the character (캐릭터 중심으로 본 어린이 만화연대기 연구)

  • This study analyzed the chronology of children's cartoon through character while the children's cartoon section is planned at the Memorial Exhibition of 100th year of Korean Cartoon which will be held at the Contemporary Art Gallery in celebration of the 100th year after birth of Korean Cartoon. The approaching method based on character is regarded as the most proper and feasible in the identification of character and meaning of children's cartoon because the character in cartoon contains the bigger role and meaning than the descriptive structure of narration. The Committee of 100th Year of Korean Cartoon, Aicheorum which is a study association for children's cartoon and Cartoon My Love $Cafe^{42)}$ in Naver jointly selected the 70 cartoon characters. A brief history is established based on these characters through chronological classification in seven sectors of around 10 year session such as before 1950s of quickening period and liberation, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1000s, 1900s and after 2000. It examined the historical meaning, its reflection and characteristics focused on the cartoon character and the cartoonist which were well-known to everybody not only the display according to chronological order. The study intented the stereoscopic illumination on the children's cartoon and character which were favored beyond the generations. In addition, the similarity and human relation among cartoonist to cartoonist and character to character were analyzed and traced to identity the fact that children cartoon character is not individualistic being but it lies on the extension of tradition and trend of eternal cartoon history Finally, hopefully it will make a contribution to activate the pure creative children's cartoon in Korea through reminding the importance of character in cartoon, affirming the industrial value and reflecting the direction and perspective of pure creative children's cartoon.

Symbolic Analysis of a Figure Character in Satirical Cartoon 'National Intelligence Service Female Agent' (만평 속 인물캐릭터인 '국정원 여직원'의 기호적 분석)

  • Satirical cartoon features figure characters that liken to particular figures or social phenomenon to satirize particular figures or social phenomenon. Through the words and actions of figure characters in satirical carton, fraudulentact of man in power or irrational social phenomenon is revealed. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) female agent that is the figure character of this study has been appearing in satirical cartoon for a long time and it likens to social phenomenon instead of a actual figure. The reason why the NIS female agent has been appearing as a figure character in satirical cartoon for a long time is because related social phenomenon has not ended and is still in progress. In addition, the reason why it likens to social phenomenon instead of an actual figure is based on the fact that it is not easy to identify her face that has been hidden, which makes it difficult to exaggerate the characteristic of the figure. Her hidden face is also an expression of the desire to hide that is symbolized by baseball cap and muffler. Her hidden face and the desire to hide make it easy to substitute to other related figure or social phenomenon instead of actual figure. Namely, outward appearance of the NIS female agent has a good condition for combining 'added significance' in satirical cartoon. Irrelevant to actual NIS female agent, a satirical cartoon figure of NIS female agent is being combined with various meanings when needed and it is substituted as another figure, group or social phenomenon as the actual figure disappears. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to reveal the role of figure character in satirical cartoon by symbolically analyzing the figure character that appears in satirical cartoon as 'NIS female agent'. The followings were revealed through the symbolic analysis of figure character in satirical cartoon in this study. First, satirical cartoon satirizes social phenomenon. Figure character in satirical cartoon satirizes social phenomenon in place of actual figure. Second, satirical cartoon satirizes core or embarrassing area of irrational social phenomenon created by politics. Figure character in satirical cartoon satirizes core or embarrassing area of social phenomenon by revealing it in place of actual figure. Third, satirical cartoon sends a message of warning to a responsible person of irrational social phenomenon created by politics. Humor of Post-Industrial Society Costume Expressing Cartoon Image (만화 이미지가 표현된 후기산업사회 복식의 해학)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify a basic meaning of humor from the costume expressing cartoon image, to grasp the status of contemporary costume, and also to supply people with a database related to the sphere of costume design. This was done by analyzing and examining humor of the costume expressing cartoon image in post-industrial society. Consequently, the result of this study was summarized as follows; First, humor by parody of Pop Art is recognized as humorous expression that repulsed the main current culture and post-industrial society phenomenon. Second, humor by quotation tends to appear through cartoon character. Costume which quote cartoon character is against Kidult tastes and the pre-existing authoritative prejudices in post-industrial society. Third, humor by bricolage, making bricolage with silhouette, color, pattern item, is recognized as new creation of humor In other words, it is regarded as enlargement of new esthetic consciousness and humor about instrumented gender in post-industrial society. Lastly, humor by deformation expressed itself in deformation of body image of character and cloth silhouette by cartoon image. Deformation of cloth silhouette by cartoon image, being not conscious pre-existing concept of harmony of human and costume, is recognized as humor which have characteristic of play with introduction of new silhouette. In addition to, the result of this study showed that humor expressed in cartoon image of costume has been limited to the works of few designers because of characteristics of fashion designers who made use of popularity as subjects of the works and internal meanings which were related to the characteristics of post-industrial society.

  • In a "Culture Content" industry, the character takes an important role to make a strong storyline. Especially in the field of cartoon which is composed with script and pictures, the role of character is more significant. There are few ways to analyze the character, and "Enneagram" is one of them. In this thesis paper, the author uses this Enneagram to analyze the character. Enneagram is a tool that divides characters into 9 categories of personality. In the year of 2001, South Korea published the standardized Enneagram test called KEPTI. By using the division chart of Enneagram, it is much easier to analyze the character's personality type in the cartoon. Also, this tool makes it possible to understand which character type is suitable for certain role and genre. Although it is hard to say the Enneagram tool represents all existing personalities, it would be definitely helpful for someone who tries to create or to set up a new character.

  • This study based on hypothesis essentiality of character developing is necessary in origin role of cartoons and concern the characteristic of modern society is great many products and consumptions. On contrary to this hypothesis, characters are not importantly utilized in work and planning. As a fundamental research for developing character in cartoon, this research study for personification. Comparative study personification in fable and cartoon. The common feature underlying personification in fable and cartoon are purified expression for object of satire, putting symbolical meaning to target of satire, presenting a diversity of view, reducing descriptions, supporting to understand context easily and playing a role as make interesting and laugh with irony and fantasy.

  • This paper examines the types and characteristics of cartoon and animation characters in contemporary fashion in order to provide the basic data necessary for the development and use of fashion character designs that develop creative designs and culturally high values. This study examined the relevant literature, reviewed local publications, foreign fashion magazines, and Internet data from 2000 to 2009. In this way, it analyzed various visual images that reflect cartoon and animation characters in case studies. This paper found some expression types, which are the direct expression of characters through print or collage, the borrowing of character images, the use of cartoon expression techniques, and the use of characters for the composition of clothing forms. Those expression types had some similar characteristics. The first is the expression of a kidult-like entertainment that reflected the inner psychology of adults trying to escape from a complicated modem society and returning to their childhood. The second is the expression of satire. Cartoon and animation characters were used as a medium for pointing out social irregularities and evil deeds that taught the lesson of good triumphing over the evil in fashion; they expressed the satire of the modem society and delivered a message of purity and hope. The third is the use of a decorative factor. Each character was printed in primary colors or expressed in colorful beads, and serial cartoon scenes were printed on clothes and used to make a decorative effect of fashion designs.

  • The Korean domestic cartoon industry has grown explosively by 65% compared to the previous year. Then the market size is expected to exceed KRW 1 trillion. However, excessive work results in health deterioration. Moreover, this working environment makes the production of human resources insufficient, repeating a vicious cycle. Although some tasks require creation activity during cartoon production, there are still a lot of simple repetitive tasks. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a method for creating a character pose through human pose estimation (HPE). The HPE is to detect key points for each joint of a user. The primary role of the proposed method was to make each joint of the character match that of the human. The proposed method enabled us to create the pose of the two-dimensional cartoon character through the results. Furthermore, it was possible to save the static image for one character pose and the video for continuous character pose.

  • Traditional rendering of cartoon character cannot revive the feeling of concept drawings properly. In this paper, we propose capture technology to get toon shading model from the concept drawings and with this technique, we provide a new novel system to render 3D cartoon character. Benefits of this system is to cartoonize the 3D character according to saliency to emphasize the form of 3D character and further support the sketch-based user interface for artists to edit shading by post-production. For this, we generate texture automatically by RGB color sorting algorithm to analyze color distribution and rates of selected region. In the cartoon rendering process, we use saliency as a measure to determine visual importance of each area of 3d mesh and we provide a novel cartoon rendering algorithm based on the saliency of 3D mesh. For the fine adjustments of shading style, we propose a user interface that allow the artists to freely add and delete shading to a 3D model. Finally, this paper shows the usefulness of the proposed system through user evaluation.

  • Mainland China is under different conditions both socially and politically than other countries, so there is a lack of practical researches on cartoon characters. With a profound interest, the researcher has selected a character that is realistic and loved by many Chinese. The subject of the study is "Shan Mao Series." Out of 16 seasons, the most famous one is the Chronicle of Shan Mao's Wander. I analyzed the character thoroughly, dealing with the beginning of the character, the process of character development, and a reality shown in the chronicle, etc. on chapter II, and the character's image component on chapter III. Chinese modern cartoons were affected by a situational anxiety because of foreign powers and war. Thus satire cartoons went in fads among the public. The epitome of a typical cartoon was the Shan Mao Series. From 1935, when the character was first created, to now it has eaten into Chinese people's hearts. It's because the story happens during a war period and it deals with a playful, humorous main character's life and these facts show the hidden side of the unfair social system. Most of readers prefer a smart, playful, righteous, and brave character. Shan means three and mao, hair in Chinese, so Shan Mao is a child who has three hair. The character is not just a simple cartoon character; it has developed into a national figure among many Chinese. The reason why the researcher has chosen the series created by Zhang Leping, the author of the cartoon, is because a good cartoon, good animation, and even good movie stimulate the feelings that we get from our surroundings. The character which is created in China seems very unique and bizarre but there is a sense of friendliness. Also its character image and scenes make people laugh and it has become a typical symbol of a modern cartoon in China.
