Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments from Doam Bay, Southwestern Coast of Korea (한국 남서해안 도암만 표층퇴적물의 중금속 함량 및 분포 특성)

  • Forty-four surface sediments from Doam Bay were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total metal (Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and further chemical partitioning of metals were carried out in some samples. The TOC (0.32~3.10%) and TN (0.03~0.26%) values of the samples were similar to those of other coastal area. The C/N ratios ranged from 7.9 to 11.9 with an average 9.3 which revealed that contribution of terrestrial organic matters was relatively rare. Contents of analysed metals showed a level lower than threshold effects level (TEL) in sediment quality guidelines. Based on the chemical speciation of metals, the lattice fractions were found in the order Cr > Cu > Ni > Zn > Pb > Mn, while Mn and Pb are the ratio of the non-lattice fractions accounted for more than 50%. The average baseline values were obtained relative cumulative frequency curves and linear regression analysis. The respective baseline concentrations for Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr and Mn were 11.8, 23.1, 26.8, 76.6, 56.7, 585 mg/kg, respectively. Based on geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) with a baseline values of Mn showed that face the contamination phase from estuarine stations. However, in case of Zn and Pb, although there is no sign of contamination, it could be release from sediment when there is a change in the environment, which is caused from the high ratio of non-lattice fractions.

Predicting Potential Distribution of Monochamus alternatus Hope responding to Climate Change in Korea (기후변화에 따른 솔수염하늘소(Monochamus alternatus) 잠재적 분포 변화 예측)

  • Predicting potential spatial distribution of Monochamus alternatus, a major insect vector of the pine wilt disease, is essential to the spread of the pine wilt disease. The purpose of this study was to predict future domestic spatial distribution of M. alternatus by using the CLIMEX model considering the temperature condition of the vector's life history. To predict current distribution of M. alternatus, the administrative divisions data where the pine wilt spots caused by M. alternatus were found from 2006 to 2014 and the 10-year mean climate observed data in 68 meteorological stations from 2006 to 2015 were used. Eight parameter sets were chosen based on growth temperature range of M. alternatus reported in preceding researches. Error matrix method was utilized to select and simulate the parameter sets showing the highest correlation with the actual distribution. Regarding the future distribution of M. alternatus, two periods of 2050s(2046-2055) and 2090s(2091-2100) were predicted using the projected climate data of RCP 8.5 Scenario generated from Korea Meteorological Administration. Overall results of M. alternatus distribution simulation were fit in the actual distribution; however, overestimation in Seoul Metropolitan area and Chungnam Region were shown. Gradual expansion of M. alternatus would be expected to nationwide from western and southern coastal areas of Korea peninsula.

Analysis of the influence of ship traffic and marine weather information on underwater ambient noise using public data (공공데이터를 활용한 선박 통행량 및 해양기상정보의 수중 주변소음에 대한 영향성 분석)

  • In this paper, we analyze the influences of ship traffic and marine weather information on underwater ambient noise. Ambient noise is an important environmental factor that greatly affects the detection performance of underwater sonar systems. In order to implement an automated system such as prediction of detection performance using artificial intelligence technology, which has been recently studied, it is necessary to obtain and analyze major data related to these. The main sources of ambient noise have various causes. In the case of sonar systems operating in offshore seas, the detection performance is greatly affected by the noise caused by ship traffic and marine weather. Therefore, in this paper, the impact of each data was analyzed using the measurement results of ambient noise obtained in coastal area of the East Sea of Korea, and public data of nearby ship traffic and ocean weather information. As a result, it was observed that the underwater ambient noise was highly correlated with the change of the ship's traffic volume, and that marine environment factors such as wind speed, wave height, and rainfall had an effect on a specific frequency band.

Fluctuation of the Catch by the Set Net Fishery (정치망어업의 어획량변동에 관한 연구)

  • The catch by the set net fishery from 1971 to 1985 were analyzed in order to reveal its fluctuation characteristics. Generally, the catch increased from 16,787M/T in 1971 to 84,103M/T in 1985 and showed maximum in 1979 with 99,475M/T of catch. This trend was mainly related to the higher production of file fish which accounts for 64% of the total catch in 1979, and the change of catch statistical classification according to the revising of fishery law in 1976. It was also closely related to the variation of the sea water temperature in coastal area. The main fishing period of the set net fishery appeared from October to November. Catch of the set net fishery was led by that in the southern coast before 1976 and by that in the eastern coast from 1977 to 1980, the tendency changed irregular from 1981. Three groups of fishes could be distinguished by principal component analysis of the annual catch. A group showing steady decreasing tendency was composed of the fishes such as whiting, sand fish, hair tail and anchovy. The another group composed of small alaska pollack, round herring, goby, gizzard shad, sand lance and file fish revaled an increasing tendency. The other fishes did not show any annual tendency.

Reproduction and Early Life History of Gunnel, Pholis fangi in the Yellow Sea off Korea (한국 서해 흰베도라치 (Pholis fangi)의 생식과 초기 생활사)

  • Larvae of the gunnel Pholis fangi were collected in coastal waters off Daecheon with a bag net from March to June, 1988, and with a ring larva net in February 1989. Maturity and spawning period were analyzed by examination of the gonads of adult fish collected with a bag net from May 1998 through November 1999. In February, the larvae were widely distributed in the outer and inner Cheonsu Bay. From March to April the larvae were present mainly the inner bay; they were absent there in May and found mainly in the outer bay. After June, few gunnel larvae were collected in the study area. This suggests a seaward movement of gunnel from the nursery grounds of the bay to offshore feeding grounds. The otolith of larvae smaller than 10 mm in total length did not show a distinct growth stop. The growth stop is believed to be formed in the early larval stage when the total length is about 10 mm. This period coincides with the time of shoreward migration, suggesting a metabolic change during this period. At a total length of 30 to 40 mm, the shape of the otolith changes from spherical to elongate. Daily growth rate in length was estimated by the Gompertz equation, which is represented as follows: TL = 6.702exp{2.925"1-exp (-0.008 t)"} ($r^2=0.94$, N = 92) Assuming daily deposition of growth increments in the otolith, the time of first growth increment formation was shown to be from December to January. Gonad observations show that Pholis fangi spawns from November to December. So, the hatching time is thought to be about one month.

Salinity Distribution in the Mid-eastern Yellow Sea during the High Discharge from the Keum River Weir (금강하구언 대량방류시 황해 중동부 해역의 염분분포)

  • Hydrographic survey was carried out in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea from Keum River to Taean Peninsula in order to study the motion of the freshwater from the Keum River during July 07-12, 1997 when a large volume of freshwater was discharged from the Keum River weir. The low-salinity (less than 30.0 psu) plume was distributed over the large area between the Keum River and Ochong Island, 60 km northwest off the Keum River mouth. A band of relatively low saline water, originating from the Keum River, was also observed to the north of Ochong Island. The strong haline front had advanced from near Sibidongpa Island to Ochong Island, 25 km northwest of Sibidongpa Island, for 48 hours. A northwestward flow of a speed greater than 0.2 m/s was observed in the surface plume layer to the north of Sibidongpa Island where the water column was strongly stratified. The observed mean flow and the change of the frontal position are interpreted as resulting from the spreading of the Keum River plume. These results suggest that the discharge from the Keum River plays an important role in the coastal circulation of the mid-eastern Yellow Sea adjacent to the river.

Economic Impacts of Sea-level Rise and Optimal Protection on Jeju Island (해수면 상승에 따른 경제적 피해 비용 및 최적 해안 방어 비율 추정 -제주도를 대상으로-)

  • This study estimates the economic impact of sea-level rise on Jeju island and suggests the optimal protection level based on the FUND model. There exist a number of studies that estimate the impacts of sea-level rise on global scale, but their results are of limited use for local scale such as Korea. Therefore, this study applies some specific indicators and data of Korea into to FUND model for deriving site specific estimates. The results show that 2.01%~2.25% of land could be inundated by sea-level rise until 2100. The value of affected land is about 6.4%~7.2% of total land value. The discrepancy between the figures indicates that the area affected by sea-level rise is much more valuable than the rest of Jeju island. The optimal protection level in Jeju city is higher than that in Seguipo city, even though the coastal length of Jeju city is longer than that of Seguipo. This is due to the fact that the economic value of Jeju city is much higher than that of Seoguipo city.

Vegetation Structure and Management Strategies of Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia Community on the Southernmost Distribution Area in Korea (멸종위기 식물인 갯봄맞이 최남단 군락의 식생구조)

  • Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia is distributed in very limited areas in South Korea and thus designated and protected as an endangered species. This study aimed to identify the diversity of vegetation in the Dangsa coast wetlands, the southern limit of G. maritima var. obtusifolia and to assess determinants of the vegetation and the importance of habitats. The phytosociological method of the $Z{\ddot{u}}rich-Montpellier$ School was used for vegetation classification and mathematical and statistical analyses were also conducted to analyze environmental factors and their relationship with the vegetation. The results of this study showed that there were 4 vegetation units in the Dangsa coast wetlands: Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia-Triglochin maritimum community (included three subcommunities), Puccinellia nipponica s.l. community, Beckmannia syzigachne-Isachne globosa community and Typha laxmannii-Phragmites communis community. It was also found that major determinants of the vegetation include moisture environment, soil depth, water level disturbance, vegetation height, community structure, etc. Glaux maritima was identified to grow most dominantly in the typicum subassociation of Glaux. maritima var. obtusifolia-Triglochin maritimum community, and the species compositions and dominant situations were observed to be similar to those in the southern limit in Japan, adjacent to South Korea. The assessment results indicated that the Dangsa coastal wetlands have a significant meaning from phytogeographical and syngeographical aspects, and contribute as a shelter for diverse species. It is required to establish conservation strategies to accurately determine the value of the wetlands of the Dangsa coast from various perspectives, and to protect and manage them.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics around Tidal Current Turbine (조류발전용 터빈 주위의 유동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • All the countries in the world is currently facing the full scale of energy-climate era currently, and making strong energy policy that will lead to green growth of the future energy resources by utilizing renewable energy as the basis of entering the advanced country becomes the goal of development that satisfies the demand for energy in 21st century. Recently, ocean energy attracted the attention along with the necessity of developing renewable energy. Ocean energy is the one of most prominent recyclable and clean resources that has not been developed yet. So, it is highly required to develop good tidal current energy conversion system in coastal area. The inflow angle that acts against tidal current turbine, seabed effect and the change of efficiency along the occurrence of cavitation were investigated through the wake flow characteristics in this study. Power coefficient degradation by seabed effect did not appear in the condition of this calculation. Efficiency degradation appeared from above $10^{\circ}$ regarding inflow angle and power coefficient was calculated as lower by 7 % at $45^{\circ}$. Torque and power coefficient increased as inflow velocity rose, but power coefficient degradation appeared from above 3m/s when the cavitation happened. So, it was recognized that the larger inflow angle and occurrence of cavitation become the reason for power degradation through the flow characteristics.

Seawater Temperature Variation at Aquafarms off Wando in the Southwest Coast of Korea (완도 양식장 해역의 수온변동)

  • Abalone culture is one of important coastal fisheries off Wando in the southeast coast of Korea. Since cage culture for abalones was popularized, Understanding of temperature variation, which is important to raise abalones and to prevent their mass mortalities, is necessary. We analyzed temperature data from 2005 to 2009 obtained at Sinji-do and Cheongsan-do off Wando. Sinji-do, which is relatively close to land, had yearly wide range of temperature and rate of temperature variation. It is likely to be caused by heating of solar radiation in summer and cooling in winter at the shallow area. Rate of temperature variation in autumn was higher than that in spring. In summer short term variation of temperature corresponding tidal period was distinguished clearly. Diurnal temperature range, abrupt temperature change, was larger open sea. Comparison between temperatures of two stations and favorable raising conditions of abalones showed that Cheongsan-do, located out to sea, appears to be more appropriate than Sinji-do.
