COMPARISON OF THE COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS BETWEEN S.I. ENGINE AND R.I. ENGINE

  • This experimental study was carried out to obtain both low emissions and high thermal efficiency by rapid bulk combustion. Two kinds of experiments were conducted to obtain fundamental data on the operation of a RI engine by a radical ignition method. First, the basic experiments were conducted to confirm rapid bulk combustion by using a radical ignition method in a constant volume chamber (CVC). In this experiment, the combustion velocity was much higher than that of a conventional method. Next, to investigate the desirable condition of engine operation using radical ignition, an applied experiment was conducted in an actual engine based on the basic experiment results obtained from CVC condition. A sub-chamber-type diesel engine was reconstructed using a SPI type engine with controlled injection duration and spark timing, and finally, converted to a RI engine. In this study, the operation characteristics of the RI engine were examined according to the sub-chamber's specifications such as the sub-chamber volume and the diameter and number of passage holes. These experimental results showed that the RI engine operated successfully and was affected by the ratio of the passage hole area to the sub-chamber volume.

Characterization of Volatile Organic Compounds associated with Environmental Tobacco Smoke

  • In this study, a wide range of volatile organic constituents of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) were determined using an environmental chamber, where ETS is the sole source of target compounds. ETS was generated in an environmental chamber by a number of different cigarettes, including the Kentucky reference cigarette and eight different commercial brands. More than 30 compounds were measured simultaneously for a total of twelve experimental runs. The target compounds are classified into three major classes, i.e. vapor phase ETS markers including 3-ethnylpyridine (3-EP) and nicotine, carbonyl compounds including formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results from the chamber study were used to generate characterized ratios of selected VOCs to 3-EP, a vapor phase ETS marker. Emission factors for VOCs associated with ETS were also estimated. The characteristic ratios appeared to be generally in good agreement with published data obtained by environmental chamber studies similar to this study. This implies that the ratios may be useful for identifying and quantifying the impact of ETS as a source of target compounds in 'real world' indoor environments, which is affected by a complex mixture of multi-sources. The environmental chamber method described here provides a direct and reliable method to compare the ETS generated by different cigarettes. The method can also be applied to the simultaneous determination of many different ETS components.

유체의 압축성을 고려한 ER 댐퍼의 동적 모델링 (Dynamic Modeling of ER Damper Considering Fluid Compressibility)

  • This paper proposes a new method for dynamic modeling of electrorheological(ER) damper considering fluid compressibility. After describing configuration and operating principle of the ER damper, a quasi-static modeling of the ER damper is conducted on the basis of Bingham model of ER fluid. Subsequently, the dynamic model for describing the ER damper considering compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is obtained using the lumped parameter method. This method includes dynamic motions of annular duct, upper chamber, lower chamber and connecting pipe. The hysteresis behavior of the ER damper is evaluated through computer simulations and compared with experimental results. In addition, the hysteresis behavior due to the compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is investigated through computer simulations.

Erythropoietin 검사법(檢査法)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on Erythropoietin Bioassay Method)

  • It is the purpose of this paper to design the most preferable method of erythropoietin bioassay in Korea. Bioassay utilizing polycythemic mice are currently in general use for the indirect determination of erythropoietin. Assay animals are usually prepared either by transfusion or by exposure to reduced oxygen tension in specially constructed chamber. We prepared the polycythemic, mice by the specially constructed hypobaric chamber. We observed weights and hematocrits of the mice in the hypobaric chamber, then hematocrits and 72 hours $^{59}Fe$ red cell upatke ratio of the polycythemic mice induced by hypoxia after removal from the hypobaric chamber. We designed the method of erythropoietin bioassay according to the results obtained by above experiments. Then we measured the 72 hours $^{59}Fe$ red cell uptake ratio of the polycythemic mice with normal saline, normal plasma and anemic plasma according to the method we designed. The results are followed: 1. The hematocrits of the mice in hypobaric chamber increased to 74% in 14 days It is preferable to maintain the pressure of the chamber to 400mmHg for first 4 days then 300mmHg for last 10 days to reduce the death rate and time consuming in hypobaric chamber. 2. After removal from the hypobaric chamber, the 72 hours $^{59}Fe$ red cell uptake ratio decreased rapidly and maintained the lowest level from the fourth day to tenth day. 3. We design the method of erythropoietin bioassay according to the results of above experiment and to the half life of erythropoietin. 4. The Korean product S9Fe is mixture of $^{59}Fe\;and\;^{55}Fe$. And the $^{59}Fe$ red cell uptake ratio in normal mice was far less with Korean product $^{59}Fe$ than with pure $^{59}Fe$ of foreign product. So it is desirable to use pure $^{59}Fe$ in this method of erythropoietin bioassay. 5. Considering the cost, the technique, the time consuming and the sensitivity it is the most preferable method of erythropoietin bioassay in Korea using hypobaric chamber to induce the polycythemia.

A pilot study of a new fingerprint powder application method for the reduction of health risk

  • As a traditional method to apply fingerprint powder, brush method ("dusting") can create a risk to the health of crime scene investigators due to the inhalation toxicity of harmful and fine powders. Therefore, as a new method of applying powders, we tried to evaluate the potential of a chamber method for the development of latent fingerprint using fans in a closed chamber with a fixed capacity that can prevent the powders from being blown outside and exposed to the users, by comparing with the development results of the conventional brush method. Fingerprints on glass and plastic (PET) were extracted with black powder and green fluorescent powder, and the sharpness and minutiae of the developed fingerprints were compared for each method. The results of the black powder showed similar results, but the effect of the chamber method was slightly decreased when the green fluorescent powder was used. In order to improve the development with the green fluorescent powder, the mixture (50 : 50) of the fluorescent powder with the silica gel was tested and the results were similar to those of the brush method. It is expected that the chamber method has a high potential as a new powder application method considering the health of the crime scene investigator after fine tuning of development conditions with additional studies.

  • 본 논문에서는 전자파 장해 및 복사내성 측정에 사용되는 준전자파 무반사실의 대용 방법으로 활용될 수 있는 전자파 잔향실 중에서 원통형 구조 전자파 잔향실의 전자기장 특성과 모드 분포를 연구하여 원통형 구조 전자파 잔향실의 모드 수 계산법을 제시하였으며, 이것을 사용하여 체적이 동일한 원통형 전자파 잔향실의 모드수를 반지름과 높이 비에 따라 비교 분석하였다. 또한 각각의 체적이 동일한 직사각형, 직각 이등변 삼각형, 원통형의 전자파 잔향실의 필드 균일도를 FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain)를 이용하여 비교 해석하였다.

예연소실 점화플러그의 화염가시화와 화염전파특성 (Flame Visualization and Flame Characteristics of Spark Plug with Pre-ignition Chamber)

  • New concept spark plug was developed to study its influence on the combustion characteristics of SI engine. It has pre-ignition chamber at the lower end of spark plug and flame hole, in which fresh mixture gas can be put in through the flame hole without any fuel supply system. This spark plug was tested in a single cylinder engine dynamometer for different air fuel ratio to measure the fuel consumption rate, emission gases, and MBT timing. And constant volume combustion chamber was made to understand flame characteristics of spark plug. New spark plug induced fast burn compared to the conventional spark plug and its effects were increased in lean air fuel ratio. Pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 5 holes which had adjusted size was more stable and effective in combustion performance than pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 1 hole. And its effects showed larger differences in lean air fuel ratio than stoichiometric condition. Flame kernel and flame growth process of conventional spark plug and pre-ignition chamber spark plug studied by flame visualization of schlieren method.

  • The HANARO reactor has a vertical hole for a cold neutron source (CNS) in the heavy-water reflector tank, i.e., the CNS hole, which was considerably deformed during its welding to the horizontal cold neutron (CN) beam tube. This paper presents an investigation of the form of the CNS hole for the optimal design of the a vacuum chamber for the CNS. In addition, the installation method of the vacuum chamber into the CNS hole for minimizing the water thickness between the vacuum chamber and the nose of the CN beam tube is proposed.

  • A computer program was developed for the prediction of transient flow in a water supply system. where an air chamber is installed to reduce the water hammering. The governing equations based on a characteristic method are solved using a finite difference method. A design process of an air chamber is shown in the present paper considering the effects of the initial air volume and the discharge coefficients of the orifice on the total volume and over-all performance of the chamber.
