The aboveground activities of the larger black chafer (Holotrichia morosa Waterhouse) and the Korean black chafer (H. diomphalia Bates) adults were investigated in the field and laboratory from 1991 through 1992. In a field cage, H. morosa adults emerged from the ground between 7 : 40-9 : 00 p.m. and H. diomphalia adults emerged between 7 : 30-10 : 00 p.m. After emergence, both females and males flied actively for less than one minute in H. morosa, while males flied inactively and females did not fly at all in H. diomphalia. Once emerged, adults of the two species mated or fed on plant leaves and seemed to stay aboveground till dawn. H. mOTOsa adults were attracted to a blacklight trap mainly between 8 : 10-10 : 00 p.m. in the field. H. morosa males and females emerged from soil every other day in a glass cistern.

Root-feeding Scarabaeidae, particularly white grubs are considered among the most harmful coleopteran insect pests in turfgrass. In this work, sixteen entomopathogenic fungal species were assayed against flower chafer beetle, Protaetia brevitarsis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and Metarhizium anisopliae JEF-314 showed high virulence. The control ability of the isolate JEF-314 has been in detail tested for a model insect flower chafer beetle. Further analyses showed insect stage-dependent virulence where the fungal virulence was the highest against smaller instar larvae. Additionally, we confirmed that millet-based solid cultured granule was effective against the soil-dwelling larval stage. The isolate also showed a similar ability for a representative pest (Popillia spp.) in laboratory conditions. Our results clearly suggest a high potential of M. anisopliae JEF-314 to control the flower chafer beetle, possibly resulting in controlling of root-feeding white grubs in turfgrass. Based on the insect life cycle and susceptibility to the fungus, late spring and summer time would be the optimum time to apply JEF-314 granules for an effective control. Further characterization of the efficacy of the fungus under field conditions against the Scarabaeidae beetles might provide an efficient tool to control this beetle in an environment-friendly way.

Effective microorganisms (EM), which are sources of fermentation byproducts in herbal medicine, were compared with oyster mushrooms(OM) to identify alternative larval feeds for white-spotted flower chafer (Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis). The nutritional composition of each fermented feed was analyzed. The content of crude protein, crude fat, and fiber was higher in the OM fermented feed, except for crude ash. No difference in nutritional content of larvae based on fermented feed was observed. A comparative weekly analysis of the live weights of larvae was based on the fermented feed used. The average weight was significantly higher in the feeds using EM and OM from third week of observation. The larval survival rate in the presence of fermented feed was 96.7% compared with 9.8% with non-fermented feed. The results suggest that fermented food source is essential for the growth of white-spotted flower chafer, and OM was a stable alternative to EM as a fermentation source for the survival of white-spotted flower chafer.
This study was carried out to know the oviposition preference site of chestnut brown chafer ( CBC ), Adoretus tenuimaculatus and its temporal activity and spatial distribution in green. Larval distribution was also investigated in golf courses for the control of CBC. CBC collected from Yongwon Golf Club in Chinhae, Tongdo Golf Club in Yangsan, Gyeongsan Province, Daegu Golf Club in Gyeongsan, Kyeongbuk Province, Dongrae Golf Club laid more eggs on broableaf of Zoysia matrella than Z. japonica, broadleaf+middleleaf of Z. matrella, Poa pratensis, and P. annua. The number of CBC egg was $19.7\pm$6.7 in Z. japonica,$ 1.7\pm$1.5 in P. pratensis, $1.3\pm$1.5 in sandy loam and $5.7\pm$2.9 in sand. Acitivity time of CBC in a day was the peak at 20:00 and continued to 24:00. CBCs adults were more collected from outside of golf courses whichhad many host plants than roadside courses. Density of white grubs was significantly different in fairway only. CBCs were more collected at tee and fairway than green. Density of white grubs was $54.6\pm$100 in broadleaf of Z. matellia and $37.7\pm$33.8 in P. pratensis at the back tee of the 7th hole in Dongrae Golf Club.
Preference of chestnut brown chafer (CBC), Adoretus tenuimaculatus was examined from chestnut leaves which were treated with different light condition, temperature and nitrogen fertilization. More CBC was attracted to leaves which grown at $30^{\circ}C$ than grown at $20^{\circ}C$,$ 25^{\circ}C$ and in the field. When attracted number of CBC was compared among full sunlight-grown, cloth shaded-grown and dark-grown plants, 4.0 in full sunlight grown and 5.0 in dark-grown plants. Amount of nitrogen fertilizer did not influence CBC feeding. The attractiveness of undamaged leaves with non-feeding beetles, leaves with feeding damaged, and leaves with artificial damaged was compared in replicated laboratory trials by placing the treatments in the petri-dish and counted the number of beetles that landed on the plants after 6 hr treatment. The highest number of beetles was attracted to chestnut leaf with feeding damaged ($7.7\pm$0.6) than undamaged leaf with non-feeding beetles ($5.3\pm$0.6) and artificial damaged ($4.3\pm$0.6). Managnese content in the leaves of chestnut grown in shade cloth-grown condition was higher than that in the leaves of chestnut that had been exposed to full sunlight condition and dark condition, and feeding damaged leaf.
Vegetation of golf courses and local difference of feeding host plants of brown chafer, Adoretus tenuimaculatus Waterhouse(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were investigated in golf courses. Yongwon country club in Chinhae and Tongdo country club in Yangsan Gyeongnarn, Dongrae Benest golf club in Kumjeunggu Pusan and Daegu country club in Gyeongsan Gyeongbuk province from 1995 to 1997. Vegetation and species of feeding host plant were different depending on observed place. Damaged rate of host plants were concerned with ornamental trees and natural growing host plants, and Oenothera odorata, Achyranthes japonica, Aralia elata, Viburnum awabuki, Chenapadium album var. cent rorubrum, Cornus officinalis, and Rhododendron mucronulatum were newly recorded as host plant of A. tenuimaculatus in this study. Thus, host plants of A. tenuimaculatus were 193 kinds in 48 families. Key words: Brown chafer, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, host plant, vegetation, insect-plant interaction, biological control, golf courses.

The induced antibiotic peptides were isolatde from the white-spotted folwer chafer, Protaetia brevitarsis by injection of E. coli suspension to the larvae of the insect. The antibacterial activity of the peptides were assayed by the plate growth ingibition method, and were purified by ion-exchange chromatography, reversed-phase HPLC, ion-exchange HPLC and SDS-PAGE etc. The peptides were estimated as 9 kDa in molecular weight and named Protaecin I and Protaecin II, respectively. Protaecin I and II have strong antibacterial activities against Gram-positivie and/or Gram-negative bacteria, and they are stable in the heat treatment and in the range of pH 2-12.

In this study, we present the nearly complete mitogenome sequences of the garden chafer, Polyphylla laticollis manchurica, which is listed as an endangered species in Korea. The P. l. manchurica mitogenome, which includes unfinished whole A+T-rich region and a partial srRNA was 14,473-bp long, possessing typical sets of genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes). Gene arrangement of the P. l. manchurica mitogenome was identical to the common one found in the majority of insects. The 5 bp-long motif sequence (TAGTA) that has been suggested to be the possible binding site for the transcription termination peptide for the major-strand was also found in the P. l. manchurica mitogenome between $tRNA^{Ser}$(UCN) and ND1. The start codon for COI gene and ATPase8 was designated as a typical TTG. All tRNAs of the P. l. manchurica showed a stable canonical clover-leaf structure of other mt tRNAs, except for $tRNA^{Ser}$(AGN), DHU arm of which could not form stable stemloop structure. As has been previously determined, the high A/T content was unanimously observed in P. l. manchurica in terms of A/T bias in the third codon position (73.5%) compared with the first (66.4%) and second codon position (66.2%). The PCGs encoded in major-strands are slightly T-skewed, whereas those of the minor-strand are A-skewed, indicating strand asymmetry in nucleotide composition in the Coleoptera including P. l. manchurica.
Host plants and host preference of brown chafer, Adoretus tenuimaculatus Waterhouse (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were investigated in fields and laboratory. 66 kinds of plants in 25 fanlilies were recorded as host during the field survey and 14 kinds in 5 families were verified to be eaten by artificial plant supply. Thus, host plants of A. tertuimaculatus were 186 kinds in 42 families in total including 136 kinds of plants in 32 families from literatures. 50 plants in 19 families were newly recorded as host of A. tenuimaculatus in this study. A. tenuimaculatus was the most frequently visited to J14glans sinensis and Caztanea crenata was the highest damaged plant. C. crenata, Robinia pseudoacasia, Malus sieboldii, J. sinensis, Quercus mongolica, and Q. aliena were considerably highly preferered host plant. However, A. tenuimaculatus never visited to Diospyros lotus, J. nigra, Fraxinus mandshurica, F. rhynchophylla, Pyracantha angustqolia, Paulownia coreana, and Celtis sinensis. Even the same host plant of A. tenuimaculatus. preference was different according to observed place and damage level was also different depending on observed place and time.
