Interfacial Stability Between Anode and Electrolyte of LSGM-Based SOFCs (LSGM계 고체산화물 연료전지의 전해질-음극 사이의 계면안정성)

  • Interfacial reactions at LSGM electrolyte and NiO-GDC anode interfaces were thoroughly investigated with Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM-PHlLIPS XL-30) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX-Link XL30). According to the analysis, serious reaction zone was observed at LSGM/NiO-GDC interface. It was found that the reaction layer was originated from the chemical reaction between NiO and LSGM. The reaction products were identified as La deficient form of LSGM based perovskite and Ni-La-O compounds such as LaSrGa$_{3}$O$_{7}$ and LaNiO$_{3}$ from the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD, Philips) analysis. According to the electrical characterization, interfacial layer was very electrically resistive which would be the cause of high internal resistance and low power generating characteristic of the unit cell.

Analysis of bridging Stress Effect of Polycrystlline Aluminas Using Double Cantilever Beam Method (Double Cantilever Beam 방법을 이용한 다결정 알루미나의 Bridging 응력효과 해석 III. 다결정 알루미나의 Bridging 응력분포)

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the microstructural effect on the R-curve behavior in three aluminas with different grain size distributions by analyzing the bridging stress distribution. The crack opening displacement (COD) according to the distance behind the stationary crack tip was measured using an in situ SEM fracture method. The measured COD values in the fine-grained alumina agreed well with Wiederhorn's sollution while they deviated from Wiederhorn's solution in the two coarse-grained aluminas because of the increase of the crack closure due to the grain interface bridging in the crack wake. A numerical fitting procedure was conducted by the introduction of the power-law relation and the current theoretical model together with the measured COD's in order to obtain the bridging stress distribution. The results indicated that the bridging stress function and the R-curve computed by the current model were consistent with those computed by the power-law relation providing a reliable evidence for the bridging stress analysis of the current model. The strain-softening exponent in the power-law relation n, was calculated to be in the range from 2 to 3 and was closely related to the grain size distribution. Thus it was concluded from the current theoretical model that the grain size distribution affected greatly the bridging stress distribution thereby resulting in the quantitative analysis of microfracture of polycrystalline aluminas through correlating the local-fracture-cont-rolling microstructure.

Electrical Properties in GDC (Gd2O3-Doped CeO2)/LSCF (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3) Cathode Composites for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • $Gd_2O_3$-doped $CeO_2$ (GDC) and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ (LSCF) composite cathode materials were prepared in order to be applied to intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The electrochemical polarization was evaluated using ac impedance spectroscopy involving geometric restriction at the interface between an ionic electrolyte and a mixed-conducting cathode. In order to optimize the cathode composites applicable to a GDC electrolyte, the cathode composites were evaluated in terms of polarization losses with regard to a given electrolyte, i.e., GDC electrolyte. The polarization increased significantly with decreasing temperature and was critically dependent on the compositions of the composite cathodes. The optimized cathode composite was found to consist of GDC 50 wt% and LSCF 50 wt%; the corresponding normalized polarization loss was calculated to be 0.64 at $650^{\circ}C$.

  • High-pressure deuterium annealing process is proposed and investigated for enhanced electrical and reliability properties of 512Mb DDR2 DRAM without increase in process complexity. High pressure deuterium annealing (HPDA) introduced during post metal anneal (PMA) improves not only DRAM performance but also reliability characteristics of MOSFET. Compared with a control sample annealed in a conventional forming gas, additional annealing in a high pressure deuterium ambient at $400^{\circ}C$ for 30 min decreased G1DL current and junction leakage. The improvements can be explained by deuterium incorporation at $SiO_2$/Si substrate interface near isolation trench edge.

  • Chulwha pieces collected from Hakbong-ri site in Keryong mountain were studied whether there is reactions or not in each layer to investigate firing condition of glaze, body, Chulwha, engobe of Buncheong ware in the early Chosun Dynasty, 15th~16th Century. As a result of XRD analysis of a Chulwha piece, a main crystal phase was $\alpha$-Quartz and a second was Mullite. It was assumed the firing temperature would be around $1200^{\circ}C$ because a little amount of Mullite was formed in the body and there was no phase transition $\alpha$-Quartz to cristobalite. As a result of ICRM analysis, Chulwha and glaze didn't react and the melted glazes were sunk into the Chunwha particles. The thin layer of glaze was found on the Chulwha layer. As a result, the color of Chulwha layer always came to vivid black. Moreover, Chulwha painting didn't spread over the Buncheong ware, because Chulwha and engobe didn't react. The boundary interface of engobe and body was not clear because they had similar compositions. This shows engobe was composed of more $Al_2O_3$ than body.

Effects of Reactive Air Brazing Parameters on the Interfacial Microstructure and Shear Strength of GDC-LSM/Crofer 22 APU Joints

  • In this paper, the joining characteristics of GDC-LSM ceramics with Crofer 22 APU metal alloys was investigated at different brazing temperatures and holding times by reactive air brazing. Brazing was performed using Ag-10 wt% CuO filler, at three different temperatures (1000, 1050, and 1100℃ for 30 minutes) as well as for three different holding times (10, 30, and 60 minutes at 1050℃). The interfacial microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the joining strengths were assessed by measuring shear strengths at room temperature. The results show that with increasing brazing temperature and holding time, joint microstructure changed obviously and shear strength was decreased. Shear strength varied from a maximum of 100±6 MPa to a minimum of 18±5 MPa, depending on the brazing conditions. These changes were attributed to an increase in the thickness of the oxide layer at the filler/metal alloy interface.

  • Purpose: This study was investigated the bonding strength of two kinds of Ni-Cr alloy with respect to the condition of surface treatment. Methods: The surface treatment was performed on the two kinds of Ni-Cr alloy (B alloy and R alloy) specimens, which were sandblasted with $50{\mu}m$, $110{\mu}m$, and $250{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide and were treated with opaque application (paste and wash opaque). The roughness on the surfaces of the specimens was observed. The metal-ceramic interfaces were analyzed with EPMA in order to ionic diffusion, and the shear test was performed. Results: The BA250 specimen, which has higher surface roughness, showed the highest bonding strength in B specimens. In R specimens, the bonding strength of RA110 specimen was the highest. Conclusion: B specimen formed a mechanical bond between metal-ceramic interfaces; however, in the case of R specimen, a chemical bond was formed between that interfaces. There was no significant statistical difference between the bonding strengths of two types of specimens (p>0.05).

A Study on the joining of $Al_2O_3$ to STS 304 with using Cu-7.5wt% Zr Insert metal (Cu-7.5wt% Zr 삽입 금속을 이용한 $Al_2O_3$-STS 304 접합체 계면 조직에 관한 연구)

  • Recently there is an increased interest in joining of ceramics to metals and brazing now an accepted method of joining for a wide variety of ceramic to metal combination. The present research work is aimed at establishing the basis of the metal-ceramic joining of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ to STS 304 with using Cu-7.5wt% Zr insert metals. Also the microstructures of the brazed joints were observed by using optical microscope and SEM and the reaction products were analyzed by using EDX, WDX and XRD. As a result, the following findings were obtained. The reaction layers of the brazed joints of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ to STS 304 are composed of four layers at the bonded interlayer. Double reaction layers are formed at the interface of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ insert metal. Layer I was composed of ZrO$_{2}$ particles, Fe-Cr-Ni compounds in Cu matrix, while layer II ZrO$_{2}$ band phase containing Fe-Cr-Ni compounds.

An Interface Reactions between Sintered Mn-Zn Ferrite and $SiO_2$-PbO-ZnO Bonding Glass (Mn-Zn 페라이트 소결체와 $SiO_2$-PbO-ZnO 삼성분계 봉착유리와의 계면반응)

  • Mn-Zn 페라이트 소결체와 SiO$_2$-PbO-ZnO 삼성분계 유리와의 계면반응에서 페라이트와 유리에 각각 첨가된 ZnO가 계면반응에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. SiO$_2$-PbO-ZnO 삼성분계 유리에 첨가된 ZnO 함량이 낮은 경우 페라이트와의 접합계면에서 생성되는 중간상은 Pb$_2$(Mn,Fe)$_2$Si$_2$O$_{9}$와 Pb$_{8}$(Mn,Fe)Si$_{6}$O$_{21}$의 고용체였으며, ZnO 농도가 증가함에 따라 중간상은 사라졌다. 유리속의 ZnO 성분이 증가함에 따라 페라이트 소결체 쪽의 계면부근에 Zn의 농도가 증가하는 특이한 분포가 나타났다. 이는 유리 속에 첨가된 Zn 이온의 높은 활동도로 인해 페라이트에 포함된 Zn 이온의 용해반응이 선택적으로 억제되어 나타난 것으로 생각된다. 페라이트에 첨가된 ZnO 함량이 낮은 경우 SiO$_2$-PbO 이성분계 유리와의 접합계면에서 페라이트의 용해에 따른 침식과 입계를 통한 유리의 침투가 심하게 일어났으며, ZnO 함량이 증가함에 따라 계면을 통한 상호확산과 반응이 억제되었다.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Corrosion of ρ-alumina Bonded Alumina Castable by Molten Slag (ρ-알루미나결합 알루미나 캐스터블의 용융슬래그에 의한 침식기구)

  • The Corrosion behavior of the matrix of the $\rho$-alumina bonded alumina vibrated castable was, on the basis of Jabsen's theory, elucidated by use of the Kingery's reaction mechanism. Corrosion of the matrix during induction period was controlled by the molecular diffusion. The temperature dependence of activation process is well established by the Arrhenius plots. The difference of Ca concentration between slag and interface is 23.2%, which causes a driving force of the materials transfer. The extent of the corrosion of the matrix is more deeper than that of the sintered mullite, but the corrosion mechanism can be well employed as the reaction mechanism proposed by the Kingery. The life time of the castable may be well estimated by the corrosion mechanism of Kingery.
