  • Many successive liquid-liquid extractions occur enabling purification of the crude material to occur. In high performance counter-current chromatography (HPCCC), crude material is partitioned between two immiscible layers of solvent phases. The stationary phase (SP) is retained by hydrodynamic force field effect and the mobile phase (MP) is pumped through the column. Purification occurs because of the different solubility of the components in the liquid mobile and stationary phases. There are many key benefits of liquid stationary phases such as high mass and volume injection loadings, total sample recovery, and easy scale-up. Many researchers showed that predictable scale-up from simple test is feasible with knowledge of the stationary phase retention for the planned process scale run. In this review we review the recent advances in HPCCC research and also describe the key applications such as natural products and synthetics (small or large molecules).

  • Rocking behavior of shallow foundation reduces the superstructure load during earthquake. However, because of deficiency of understanding of rocking mechanism and soil permanent deformation, it has not been applied to real construction. In this study, slow cyclic tests were conducted for embedded shallow foundations with various slenderness ratio via centrifuge tests. From the variation of earth pressure 'soil rounding surface' phenomenon which makes maximum overturning moment equal to ultimate moment capacity was observed. Rocking and sliding behavior mechanism was evaluated. Also, nonlinear behavior and energy dissipation increase as rotation angle increases. And ultimate moment capacity of embedded foundation is larger than that of surface foundation. Finally, adequate ultimate moment capacity can be suggested for seismic design through this study.

  • Tunnel modelling in the field of geotechnical engineering essentially requires models of tunnelling machines and the simulation of tunnelling processes to clarify the detailed behaviour of tunnel construction. Modern advanced mechatronics, including construction processes, machinining and control technologies, are making it possible to fabricate such models. These technologies, however, are essentially developed in a gravity field condition and are needed to examine in a 1g or cenrifuge field condition. This paper presents the simulation method for tunnelling processes and the design method for tunnelling machines with special reference to the problem of earth pressure acting on the lining of a shield tunnel. The paper then introduces and verifies the design method for tunnelling machines in the 1g field by means of checking the reproduceability of experiment data and their comparison with data in the field.

  • The SCP(sand compaction pile) method which is a vertical reinforcing technique for soft ground using a sand compaction pile has received increasing popularity in Korea. Currently, there are different methods to evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. However, a method that can consider the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity is not yet available. This study investigated the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. The study involved laboratory experiments which were conducted on a centrifuge facility. Test conditions included various ranges of replacement ratios (20, 30, and 40%), centrifuged consolidation, and loading. From the results of the study, a method which can evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground was proposed and verified using the weighted average of the replacement ratio.

  • This paper deals with the improvement of pressurized quality for high maneuver aircraft. Anti-G Valve is a pressure regulating valve for inflating anti-G suits and providing a sense line signal for a g-compensated oxygen regulator. The new anti-g valve system is satisfied with military specification MIL-V-87255 and allowed the pilots to tolerate high-G exposures without any vibrations. The flight test was performed by two T/FA-50 pilots and other tests used the centrifuge made by anti-g developer. A comparison of the new anti-g valve with period one, it have better response and low chattering phenomenon.

  • This study was investigated quality characteristics of gluten-free noodles added guar gum and basil seed gum (BSG). Gluten-free noodles were prepared using corn flour and corn starch and added 1% and 2% of guar gum and basil seed gum. Water binding capacity was measured by centrifuge, and moisture content was obtained by moisture analyzer. Color of noodles was measured from the midsection of noodles. Water absorption of noodles was calculated by weight of uncooked and cooked noodles. pH of noodles was measured by pH meter. Texture and tensile strength were obtained by rheometer. SPSS 12.0 program was used for significant differences by Duncan's multiple range test. Water binding capacity of noodles was the highest in 2% basil seed gum but 1% guar gum was the lowest. Moisture content was not different in uncooked noodles, but 1% guar had the highest moisture content in cooked noodles. Water absorption of noodles was high in basil seed gum group. pH of noodles was more increased in guar gum additions than basil seed gum additions. For hardness, control had the lowest as 16.09 N, but 2% guar gum showed the highest as 28.40 N. Tensile strength of noodles was increased by adding gums. These results suggested that 1% basil seed gum could be good materials for manufacturing gluten-free noodles in order to improve quality characteristics.

  • Geocentrifuge tests are performed to investigate the structure-soil-structure interaction of shallow foundations that have various sizes. The soil specimen is prepared by using the air-pluviation, and the dynamic responses of the foundation are monitored with separation distances between the two foundations and the embedment. During the centrifugal test, the measured ground acceleration shows a tendency to increase with the increase of the input seismic amplitude, and maximum acceleration is measured at the surface due to the ground amplification. As the separation distance between the two foundations decreases, the ratio of the response spectral acceleration (RRS) increases and the period at the peak RRS decreases due to the structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI). The RRS of the two foundations tends to decrease when the foundations are buried in the ground at the same separation distance.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate of apical plug materials for the contral of extrusion and sealing ability of high-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha in plastic root canal blocks. Seventy seven plastic blocks with canal preformed were instrumented with # 50K file 1 mm beyond apical foramen. Blocks were randomly divided into 5 groups of 15 blocks each. Group 1 was filled by high-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha only. The another 4 groups were placed with apical plug materials each other and then remaining space was back filled with high temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha Apical plug materials were used as follows; Group 2: Thermoplasticized gutta-percha (Thermoplasticized gutta-percha group) Group 3 :. Calcium hydroxide powder (Calcium hydroxide group) Group 4 : Silver point (Silver point group) Group 5 : Gutta-percha cone softened by chloroform (Gutta-percha cone group) All the blocks were stored in 100 % relative humidor at room temperature for 14 days. Filling material extruded was removed carefully and then weighed in analytic balance. Each block was placed in centrifuge tube filled with India ink, and then centrifuged for 20 minutes at 3,000 rpm. Apical leakage was measured from the apical foramen to the most coronal level of dye leakage in millimeter by two examiners under a stereoscope. The data were analysed statistically by Student's t-test The obtained results were as follows; 1. The amounts of material extruded through the foramen decreased in all of groups used apical plug materials (P<0.01). 2. Silver point group and gutta-percha cone group were similar linear leakage to high-temperature thermoplasticised gutta-percha technique only (P>0..5). 3. Calcium hydroxide group and thermoplasticized gutta-percha group showed more liner leakage than high-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha only (P<0.01, P<0.05). 4. High-temperature thermoplasticized gutta-percha technique with silver point and gutta-percha cone as apical plugs showed less linear leakage and less extrusion of filling material.

  • Generally, to evaluate a slope stability of the geosynthetic reinforced soil slope, the modified version of limit equilibrium method can be used. In most cases, resisting effects of reinforcement are dealt with considering an increased shear strength on the potential slip surface. However, it is not clear that the methods satisfy all three equilibrium equations. In this study, the new slope stability analysis method in which not only reinforcing effects of geosynthetics can be considered but also all three equilibrium equation can be satisfied is proposed. A number of illustrative examples, including published load test of large-scale reinforced retaining wall and centrifuge model tests on the geotextile reinforced soil slopes, are also analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the newly suggested method produces a relatively accurate factor of safety.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate stress concentration ratio, stress characteristics of soft clay ground improved by granular compaction piles with changes of piles type, loading condition and area replacement ratio. From the results of rigid loading tests, while vertical stresses acting on clay ground is similar, vertical stresses acting on GCP is larger than those acting on SCP with same replacement ratio. Also, average stress concentration ratio is increased proportionally with increasing the area replacement ratio of GCP and SCP. It was evaluated that average stress concentration ratio of soft clay ground improved by GCP is larger than that of SCP. As a result of flexible loading tests, stress concentration ratio is the highest when replacement ratio of GCP and SCP is 40%. Average stress concentration ratio of soft clay ground improved by GCP is a little more higher than is improved by SCP.
