The wave impact on ships could cause local damage to the ship's hull, which has been a concerning issue during the ship design process. In recent years, local structural damages of ships caused by slamming loads have been reported by accident; therefore, it is necessary to study the local slamming pressure loads and structural response assessment. In the present study, slamming loads around the ship's bow region in the presence of regular wave have been simulated by RANS equations discretized with a cell-centered finite volume method (FVM) in conjunction with the $k-{\Box}$ turbulence model. The dynamic structural response has been calculated using an explicit FE method. By adding the slamming pressure load of each time step to the finite element model, establishing the reasonable boundary conditions, and considering the material strain-rate effects, the dynamic response prediction of the bow flare structure has been achieved. The results and insights of this study will be helpful to design a container ship that is resistant enough to withstand bow flare slamming loads.
The corrosion of RC structures demonstrates very complicated forms of deterioration intermingled together but all pointing to a decrease in the durability of RC structures due to the corrosion of reinforcing bars. Until now, nondestructive techniques, such as half-cell potential and polarization resistance, have been widely available in the world. The former provides information on the probability of corrosion while the latter is associated with information concerning corrosion rates. Inversion by the boundary element method (IBEM) was developed for considering concrete resistivity. The applicability of the procedure was examined through a numerical analysis and electrolytic tests for RC slabs. A distribution in such concrete resistivity is relatively inhomogeneous including cracks on the surface of slabs. Regarding cracks in concrete, the relative coefficient of concrete resistance was introduced to perform its analysis. Further, the procedure will be developed to identify the corroded region visually using 3-D VRML.
This paper studied the mechanical characteristics of boom structures by verifying the modeling method of representing unit cells of triaxial woven fabric (TWF) composites. The modeling of the representative unit cell obtained the ABD matrix by analysing the behaviour of tensile, shear, bending, and torsion using the periodic boundary conditions for the beam element. This study aimed to validate the ABD matrix by comparing the tensile analysis output from a finite element program with the experimental results from an MTS 810 machine. Additionally, the mechanical characteristics of a TWF composite boom structure were determined through bending analysis and experiments. The findings of this research are expected to be beneficial for developing structures using TWF composites.

Recently, a new cellular metal, WBK(Wire woven Bulk Kagome) has been introduced. WBK is fabricated by assembling metal wires in six directions into a Kagome-like truss structure and by brazing it at all the crossings. Wires as the raw material are easy to handle and to attain high strength with minimum defect. And the strength and energy absorption are superior to previous cellular metals. Therefore, WBK seems to be promising once the fabrication process for mass production is developed. In this paper, an upper bound solution for the mechanical properties of the bulk WBK under compression is presented. In order to simulate uniform behavior of WBK consisted of perfectly uniform cells, a unit cell of WBK with periodic boundary conditions is analyzed by the finite element method. In comparison with experimental test results, it is found that the solution provides a good approximation of the mechanical properties of bulk WBK cellular metals except for Young's modulus. And also, the brazing joint size does not have any significant effect on the properties with an exception of an idealized thin joint.

Because foam metal has the excellent physical characteristics and mechanical performance, they are applied extensively into a lot of advanced technology areas. The aluminum foam with closed cell is one of the foam metals. It is applied widely into automobile and airplane because of the excellent absorption performance of impact energy. In this study, the mechanical characteristics by thickness was analyzed through the impact experiment of closed-cell aluminum foam, and the simulation analysis was performed for the verification. As the simulation analysis method, a finite-element analysis was carried under the same boundary conditions as the experiment by using ANSYS. By comparing with the results of experiment and simulation, it was thought that the case of thickness of 20mm was the most efficient of among the cases of thicknesses of 10mm, 20mm and 30mm. At the case of thickness of 20mm, the absorption energy by comparing with the specimen thickness is shown to become the most among three models. By using the result of this study, it is thought that it can apply the material necessary to develop the mechanical structure with aluminum foam.

Based on the potential-theory model for secondary current distribution, we could predict the thickness distributions of electroplating on patterned substrates with the different size of the auxiliary electrode. The substrates contain lithographic patterns at each sample geometry. Each sample geometry had different current distribution at the same condition except the size of the auxiliary electrodes. The size effect of the auxiliary electrode on thickness distribution of electrodeposition on patterned electrode was investigated in a series of experiments. Copper was galvanostatically deposited from an acid-sulfate solution in a reciprocating paddle cell. The thickness distributions of the workpiece scale measured by profilometry across the specimen were in good agreement with the current distribution predicted by boundary element method.
It is interesting to note that distinct element method has been used extensively to model the response of micro and discontinuous behavior in geomechanics. Impressive advances related to response of distinct particles have been conducted and there were difficulties in considering fluid effect simultaneously. Current distinct element methods are progressively developed to solve particle-fluid coupling focused on fluid flow through soil, rock or porous medium. In this research, numerical simulations of fluid injection into particulate materials were conducted to observe cavity initiation and propagation using distinct element method. After generation of initial particles and wall elements, confining stress was applied by servo-control method. The fluid scheme solves the continuity and Navior-Stokes equations numerically, then derives pressure and velocity vectors for fixed grid by considering the existence of particles within the fluid cell. Fluid was injected as 7-step into the assembly in the x-direction from the inlet located at the center of the left boundary under confining stress condition, $0.1MP{\alpha}\;and\;0.5MP{\alpha}$, respectively. For each simulation, movement of particles, flow rate, fluid velocity, pressure history, wall stress including cavity initiation and propagation by interaction of flulid-paricles were analyzed.
The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and protects the fuel assembly from the external impact load such as earthquakes. The nonlinear dynamic impact analysis is conducted by using the finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Boundary condition for dynamic analysis is well applied to the test condition. Simulation results also similarly predict the local buckling phenomena. In addition to the buckling parameter, the local buckling cause is examined by both simulation and test method. It is found to correspond well with the test results. Impact tests are also carried out for some specimens of the spacer grid in order to compare the results between the test and the simulation. This test is accomplished by a free fall dummy weight onto the specimen. From this test, only the uppermost and lowermost layers of the multi-cell are buckled, which implies the local buckling at the weakest point of the grid structure.
Coarse granular materials such as gravel and crushed stone have been used as an important fill materials to large soil structure of railway, road, dam and so on. Although much studies for general soil materials have been carried out domestically, the studies for coarse materials were insufficient. Particularly, it is the level in which the study for dynamic properties(Elastic modulus and damping ratio) of coarse materials, applies the foreign country literature. This is due to the lack of large equipment for element test. But large soil structures made of coarse granular materials are generally important infrastructures. Therefore, the reliable design parameters for coarse materials should be obtained for safe and economic design, construction and maintenance. Triaxial test is the laboratory test method that is capable of controlling a confining pressure and boundary condition. In this project, we made a multi-purpose large triaxial testing system. This testing system is able to test coarse granular materials with maximum particle diameter of 100mm and support both the load control and displacement control. The load cell is installed inside of triaxial cell and the axial displacement is measured locally in order to control and measure more accurately in the small strain level. The verification test of this testing system was carried out with urethane verification specimens. So, from now on the useful information for coarse granular materials are expected to suggested by performing many tests with various material and condition.

The fundamental frequency maximization of beam structures is carried out by using strain energy based topology optimization technique. It mainly uses the modal strain energy distributions induced by the mode shapes of the structures. The modal strain energy to be minimized is employed as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is adopted as the constraint function. The resizing algorithm devised from the optimality criteria method is used to update the hole size of the cell existing in each finite element. The beams with three different boundary conditions are used to investigate the optimum topologies against natural mode shapes. From numerical test, it is found to be that the optimum topologies of the beams produced by the adopted technique have hugh increases in some values of natural frequencies and especially the technique is very effective to maximize the fundamental frequency of the structures.
