Geochemical Characteristics of Baengnyongdonggul Cave Water, Pyeongchang, Gangwon State (강원특별자치도 평창 백룡동굴 동굴수의 지구화학적 특성)

  • This study presents the geochemical characteristics of cave water to evaluate its origin and flow path. From June 2022 to may 2023, river water was collected at two sites (WE1 and WE2) in the Donggang River around Baengnyongdonggul Cave, and cave water was collected at four sites (WE3 to WE6) inside Baengnyongdonggul Cave. Water samples were analyzed for major dissolved components. Both river and cave waters were classified as Ca-HCO3 type. All cave water samples were supersaturated in carbonate minerals, suggesting that carbonate minerals would precipitate within the cave. Due to differences in the source of cave water and the degree of water-rock interaction, the geochemical characteristics of water from sites where the flow of cave water is observed (WE3 and WE6) and rimstone pools (WE4 and WE5) could be clearly distinguished. The cave water at WE6 flows in from the Donggang River, then passes through WE3 and flows back out into the Donggang River. The cave water at WE4 and WE5 is supplied from precipitation, but the flow path of cave water at WE4 and WE5 is different.

  • In the cave, there are three kinds of CO2 gas from the human body and humidity or H2O from the underground water and also light from illumination fixture creating plants by photosynthesis. For this reason, the green plants of moss created and lived on the rock in the cave, but sometimes there would be the dry season to be killed the green mosses and hence, it could be dried and blackish. When the dried mosses were taken off from the surface of the rock like as laminated dried one, the moss lamination could be taken off together with the skin of the formated stalactite in the cave. Therefore, cave environment should be changed and degenerated. So it is useful and necessary to get selective wave lighting to have photosynthesis in the cave or not to have it in there by using of the LED lamps.

  • Unlike conventional cave classification, this paper is attempted to classify caves in Korea in considerations for the surroundings. As a result, it‘s been confirmed that a cave can maximize the effect of information delivery as a part of great tourism resources. It‘s also been confirmed that the characteristics of caves can be differently interpreted depending on the size of surrounding humanistic environment as well as the size of the cave.

Investigation of the Characteristic Nighttime Temperature of Potential Caves on Mars

  • By providing an environment where energetic particles and micrometeorites can not penetrate, caves on Mars may serve as a human shelter in future Mars explorations. More than 1,000 cave entrance candidates have been detected; however, their physical characteristics that can be utilized in detecting more candidates have not been explored in detail. In this paper, we explore the nighttime temperature of 100 cave entrance candidates and their surrounding areas to investigate 1) the nighttime temperature tendencies relative to their surrounding areas and 2) the extent of these temperature differences. We find that 79% of the cave entrance candidates exhibit higher temperatures than the surrounding areas, and 59% show a temperature difference over 20K, suggesting that the cave entrances may generally show higher temperatures than the surrounding areas during the nighttime.

  • Caves have the values of learning sites and tourism resources. But show caves are at risk of being ravaged, destroyed, and Polluted. The Purpose of this study is to analyse the management condition and the problems of the show caves, and to suggest the alternative improvement for the cave management. The research of the Cultual Properties Administration revealed many Problems including the management system, safety diagnosis, the demand for comprehensive academic research and so on. An analyzing of the questionnaire about cave manager demanded to reform working conditions, tourist education, an amendment of the Cultural Properties Protection Act, expert education for cave manager. In conclusion, It is necessary that construct the mutual cooperation system of an administrative organization, cave manager and tourist, and the Cave Management information System to manage database of cave environment.

The efficacy of biofeedback in reducing cybersickness in virtual navigation (생체신호 피드백을 적용한 가상주행 환경에서 사이버 멀미 감소 효과)

  • 이전연구에서 가상현실에 몰입하는 동안 넓은 시야 (Field of view: 150$^{\circ}$)와 빠른 운행속도 (70 km/sec)가 사이버멀미를 심화시킨다는 결과를 얻었다: 피험자의 90%가 좁은 시야 (50$^{\circ}$)와 느린 운행속도 (30 km/sec)에서 사이버멀미 증상이 적었다. 본 실험에서는 피험자가 생리적인 동요를 경험할 때마다 바이오피드백 방법을 사용해서 사이버멀미 감소 가상환경 (cybersickness alleviating virtual environment, CAVE)을 제시한 후, 그 효과를 관찰하였다. 피부전도도, 말초체온, 말초혈류량, 심박률, 눈 깜박임, 뇌전위의 변수들을 입력으로 하는 인공신경망으로 구성된 실시간 멀미 탐지 시스템과 CAVE-제시 피드백 시스템을 구축하였다. 이 시스템은 생리적 측정치들이 사이버멀미의 출현을 신호할 때마다 피드백 출력으로 좁은 화면과 감소된 운행속도를 일시적으로 제공했다. 36명의 피험자를 대상으로 SSQ (simulator sickness questionnaires)와 자기보고를 이용하여 사이버멀미의 빈도와 심각도를 조사하였다. 모든 피험자는 한달 간격으로 CAVE 조건과 non-CAVE 조건에서 두 번 가상현실을 경험하였다. 사이버멀미의 빈도와 심각도는 non-CAVE 조건보다 CAVE 조건에서 유의미하게 감소하였다. 즉, 전기생리학적 특징들에 기반한 인공신경망에 의해 제공된 좁은 시야와 느린 운행의 가상환경은 사이버멀미 증상들을 의미있게 감소시켰다. 이러한 결과들은 생체신호 피드백 시스템을 이용하여 인간 친화적 가상환경을 구축할 수 있는 가능성을 보인 것이다.

  • There are lots of natural caves in northeastern area of China. in this paper emphasis on the securities of cave management and cave survey. And discussed about the securities of the tourist and the members of the survey team. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the items of the security management as a sightseeing caves and management environment and the situation of the conservation.

Prehistoric Pathoecology as Represented by Parasites of a Mummy from the Peruaçu Valley, Brazil

  • Paleopathologists have begun exploring the pathoecology of parasitic diseases in relation to diet and environment. We are summarizing the parasitological findings from a mummy in the site of Lapa do Boquete, a Brazilian cave in the state of Minas Gerais. These findings in context of the archaeology of the site provided insights into the pathoecology of disease transmission in cave and rockshelter environments. We are presenting a description of the site followed by the evidence of hookworm, intestinal fluke, and Trypanosoma infection with resulting Chagas disease in the mummy discovered in the cave. These findings are used to reconstruct the transmission ecology of the site.
