This paper deals with the technical map of diagnosis for power cable systems. For this purpose, failure status, failure and degradation causes, and newly suggested diagnostic techniques were investigated and analyzed. From the analysis, the technical map of diagnosis for power cable systems was proposed.
This study explores how the technology commercialization process leads to either success or failure after transfer from PROs to SMEs by conducting a binomial logistic regression analysis. We found that the more additional development a firm implements on the transferred technology, the more likely the commercialization is to fail. The higher number of alternative technology and bigger market risk are associated with a greater likelihood of failure. On the other hand, the existence of complementary technology, the degree of cooperation with the technology provider, the size of the target market, the willingness of the CEO, and the funding availability are known to have positive effects on the success of technology commercialization. In addition, the case studies we conducted from the sample companies demonstrated that "market uncertainty," "technological issues depending on the technology-specific characteristics," and "a lack of funding capability" are some of the causes for failure of technology commercialization.
Static electricity in electronics manufacturing plants causes the economic loss, yet it is one of the least understood and least recognized effects haunting the industry today. Today's challenge in semiconductor devices is to achieve greater functional density pattern and to miniaturize electronic systems of being more fragile by electrostatic discharges(ESD) phenomena. As the use of automatic handling equipment for static-sensitive semiconductor components is rapidly increased, most manufacturers need to be more alert to the problem of ESD. One of the most common causes of electrostatic damage is the direct transfer of electrostatic charge from the human body or a charged material to the static-sensitive devices. To evaluate the ESD hazards by charged human body and devices, in this paper, characteristics of electrostatic attenuation in domestic semiconductor devices is investigated and the voltage to cause electronic component failures is investigated by field-induced charged device model(FCDM) tester. The FCDM simulator provides a fast and inexpensive test that faithfully represents ESD hazards in plants. Also the results obtained in this paper can be used for the prevention of semiconductor failure from ESD hazards.
This paper describes the development of a prototype expert system, which is designed to analyze loom production efficiency by employing a loom monitoring system. The problem field of the prototype expert system is the loom failure analysis which has a great effect on prouction efficiency, and the characteristic graph in which the loom failure causes are classified and organized, is used in the analysis. The knowledge for characteristic graph is organized, and an effective inference engine- is developed. The developed system is tested and modified using hypothetical loom failure causes, and the feasibility of the expert system application to extend the functions of the loom monitoring system is proved.
An FMEA for the waterjet-lifter of a DSNM is performed to prevent the occurrence of device failure. A waterjet-lifter raises and transports manganese nodules from the deep-sea floor up to a somewhat elevated place, from which a pin-scraper transports the lifted nodules to the inner space of the DSNM. A concept design for a device using the axiomatic design methodology is shown as the mapping between the functional domain and physical domain. The FMEA for a DSNM is introduced briefly and the rating criteria of severity, occurrence, and detection for the DSNM are defined. The FMEA of the functional requirements of a DSNM device is accomplished. Three kinds of failure modes, as well as their effects and causes, are predicted. Current design control methods for detecting potential failures, such as physical or computational experiments, design confirmation, and mathematical calculation, are described and the recommended actions for several significant causes are suggested.
This paper described two case studies on large scale failure of cutting slope. The kind of rock in both sites predominated limestone and shale respectively. These cutting slopes located in northern area of Gyongbug Province are composed of very complicated and various rock mass. Geological characteristics, causes of failure, proceeding of security diagnose, maintenance method etc. of two sites were carried out to check the cutting slope stability and to provide reasonable maintenance method. This paper may provide the useful data for engineers related with design and construction of large cutting slope.
Check valves playa vital role in the operation and protection of nuclear power plants. Check valves failure in nuclear power plants often lead to a plant transient or trip. An overview of the failure history of check valves needs to identify key area where resources can be best applied to further improve their reliability, and provide cost effective means for failure reduction. The analysis of historical failure data gives information on the populations of various types of check valves, the systems they are installed in, failure modes, effects, methods of detection, and the mechanisms of the failures. The results presented are based on information derived from operating records, nuclear industry reports, manufacturer supplied information. A majority of check valve failures are caused by improper application. Failure modes are identified for swing and lift check valves. Failures involving improper seating and valve disc stuck comprised the largest percentage of failures.
The failure rate of an item depends on operational environment. When an item has a chance failure period and a wearout failure period in sequel, the severity of operational environment causes the increase in the slop of wearout failure rate or the increase in the magnitude of chance failure rate. For such a change of operational environment, this paper concerns the change of optimal preventive replacement time. Two preventive replacement policies, age replacement policy and periodic replacement policy with minimal repair, are considered. Investigated properties are: (a) in age replacement policy, optimal preventive replacement time increases as the chance failure rate increases and optimal preventive replacement time decreases as the slope of wearout failure rate increases, and (b) in periodic replacement policy with minimal repair, optimal preventive replacement time increases as the slope of wearout failure rate increases; however, the change of chance failure rate does not alter the optimal preventive replacement time.
Background: It has recently become most general to use the small bore catheter to perform closed thoracostomy in treating iatrogenic pneumothorax. This study was performed for analysis of the efficacy of treatment methods by using small bore catheter such as 7 F (French) central venous catheter, 10 F trocar catheter, 12 F pigtail catheter and for analysis of the appropriateness of each procedure. Materials and Methods: From March 2007 to February 2010, Retrospective review of 105 patients with iatrogenic pneumothorax, who underwent closed thoracostomy by using small bore catheter, was performed. We analyzed the total success rate for all procedures as well as the individual success rate for each procedure, and analyzed the cause of failure, additional treatment method for failure, influential factors of treatment outcome, and complications. Results: The most common causes of iatrogenic pneumothorax were presented as percutaneous needle aspiration(PCNA) in 48 cases (45.7%), and central venous catheterization in 26 cases (24.8%). The mean interval to thoracostomy after the procedure was measured as 5.2 hours (1~34 hours). Total success rate of thoracostomy was 78.1%. The success rate was not significantly difference by tube type, with 7 F central venous catheter as 80%, 10 F trocar catheter as 81.6%, and 12 F pigtail catheter as 71%. Twenty one out of 23 patients that had failed with small bore catheter treatment added large bore conventional thoracostomy, and another 2 patients received surgery. The causes for treatment failure were presented as continuous air leakage in 12 cases (52.2%) and tube malfunction in 7 cases (30%). The causes for failure did not present significant differences by tube type. Statistically significant factors affecting treatment performance were not discovered. Conclusion: Closed thoracostomy with small bore catheter proved to be effective for iatrogenic pneumothorax. The success rate was not difference for each type. However, it is important to select the appropriate catheter by considering the patient status, pneumothorax aspect, and medical personnel in the cardiothoracic surgery department of the relevant hospital.
Recently, with increasing interested in improvement of operational reliability and the systematic maintenance activities, the RCM analysis has been applied and tried to lots of applicable industries. This study covers applying the probability of failure cause to FMEA, and proposes an analytical method for this. Also, the measures of quantitative classification for the result of failure cause probability are addressed. Based on the field data, this thesis presents an identification for causes and characteristics of failure, and reviews them periodically from the above methodologies. As using FMEA applied the probability of failure cause, we in the future can look forward to improvement of efficiency for failure diagnosis & inspection, and reliability.
