Safety Culture: A Retrospective Analysis of Occupational Health and Safety Mining Reports

  • Background: In the mining industry, various methods of accident analysis have utilized official accident investigations to try and establish broader causation mechanisms. An emerging area of interest is identifying the extent to which cultural influences, such as safety culture, are acting as drivers in the reoccurrence of accidents. Thus, the overall objective of this study was to analyze occupational health and safety (OHS) reports in mining to investigate if/how safety culture has historically been framed in the mining industry, as it relates to accident causation. Methods: Using a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, 34 definitions of safety culture were analyzed to highlight key terms. Based on word count and contextual relevance, 26 key terms were captured. Ten OHS reports were then analyzed via an inductive thematic analysis, using the key terms. This analysis provided a concept map representing the 50-year data set and facilitated the use of text framing to highlight safety culture in the selected OHS mining reports. Results: Overall, 954 references and six themes, safety culture, attitude, competence, belief, patterns, and norms, were identified in the data set. Of the 26 key terms originally identified, 24 of them were captured within the text. The results made evident two distinct frames in which to interpret the data: the role of the individual and the role of the organization, in safety culture. Conclusion: Unless efforts are made to understand and alter cultural drivers and share these findings within and across industries, the same accidents are likely to continue to occur.

  • The paper examines dynamic relationship among 'Limit to Growth' factors in Korea using causal loop diagram. It also aims to explore policy implications for Korea in overcoming current difficulties and future crisis we may face. For this purpose, five factors -economy, population, resource, environment, food- used in the were adopted as an analytical framework. Findings show that Korea is fragile to external shock such as world economic crisis, food price surge, and resource price -including energy price- hike. High dependency of energy, food and resource on foreign market was found to be a major source of limit to growth in Korea. Furthermore, environmental problems like global warming could be a major external shock that could hit Korea harder than the rest of the world. Policy implications and measures for these problems were discussed too.

사회문제로서의 치매에 대한 시스템사고적 고찰 (A Systems Thinking Approach on the Dementia as a Social Problem)

  • This study aims to comprehensively understand the dynamics of the dementia as a social problem and to find out its causes and solutions, using the systems thinking approach. The contents of the study are as follows. Firstly, it examines the existing studies on the dementia, draws their limitations and further presents the major variables to understand the dementia as a social problem. Second, it analyzes the structure of the causation in order to find out the dynamics of the problem. Lastly, it concludes with the suggestions to solve the problem based on its feedback structure presented in the causal loop diagrams. This study is expected to make a useful and basic material to grope for the solutions, as the first research to dynamically understand the dementia as a social problem.

Analysis of marine accident probability in Mokpo waterways

  • The maritime risk assessment is important not only to evaluate the safety level of the ports and waterways but also to reduce potential maritime accidents at sea in terms of the proactive measures of the maritime accidents. In this paper, the collision risk assessment in Mokpo waterways has been carried out based on the IALA recommended model, IWRAP. To evaluate the accident probabilities in Mokpo waterways, all data of vessels were collected from AIS and Radar observations data and the computer simulations were carried out. To assess the risk on the traffic, the scenario-base approach has been applied to the Mokpo waterway by using the maritime accident statics over the past 5 years.

우울 발생요인에 관한 이론적 고찰 (Theoretical Models of Causative Factors in Depression : A Review of the Literature for Nursing)

  • This literature review was undertaken to explore theoretical models of depression for their potential usefulness in nursing research and practice. Depression has bean accounted for by numerous theories or models of causation ; 11 theories selected from psychology, medicine and psychoanalysis and supported by empirical or experimental research were reviewed. These theories identify a variety of precipitating and predisposing factors that may affect the individual's depression. Aggression - turned - inward theory, object loss theory, ego functioning theory, personality organization theory, behavioral theory, learned helplessness theory, cognitive theory, genetic factors, and biological theories conceptualize predisposing factors. Only life stressors theory identifies precipitating facotrs. Each of these theories contributes to an understanding of depression, but many of them use overlapping and interrelated factors. It is also evident from recent. research that there are multiple causes for depression involving an interactive effect among predisposing and precipitating factors that are both biological and psychological in origin. That is, a single theory is not useful, but perhaps a unified theory could be developed that would be helpful to nursing. This review points to the need for continuing development and testing of theories that would integrate the multiple conceptualizations of depression.

Effects of Fashion Goods Promotion Strategy to CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

  • This study aims to determine any possible causation between identifying which major factors affect CRM(Customer Relationship Management) in terms of promotion strategies for fashion goods and classifying customers into several categories, so that it can seek reasonable strategic measures based on CRM. This study suggested a model by selecting several variables meeting its goals, and used total 672 sheets of questionnaire for final analysis. In addition, a structural equation model was analyzed As a result, it was found that pricing flexibility had more or less influential relationships with trust, satisfaction and commitment in CRM, although having a negative relationship with commitment. Salesperson's role was also significantly correlated with trust, satisfaction and commitment in CRM, and especially, there were more influential relationships with satisfaction than any other factor. Service quality had relatively high influential relationships with trust, satisfaction and commitment in CRM. Retained customers showed more or less influential relationships with trust, satisfaction and commitment, while loyal customers did so with satisfaction and commitment, except for trust.

인천항 선거내 해양환경의 이화학적 특성 (Characteristics of Physicochemical Factors of Inchon Dock Ecosystem, Korea)

  • Due to its lack of wave action and tide ecosystem in Inchon dock lacks in marine characteristics. Structural condition in the dock is artificially similar to that of lake. The purposes of this study was to clarify the water quality, to provide the basic physicochemical data and tl resolve the causation of ?미 blooming. Samples were obtained monthly from four stations in Inchon dock during January to December, 1991. Water temperature ranged from $2.7^{\circ}C$ to $27.6^{\circ}C$ under the strong influence of air temperature. Salinity varied between 24.7%-30.4% thus being influenced by freshwater discharged from a spring. Dissolved oxygen was concentrated from 0.1-13.92 mg/l and suspended solids were 6.9-231.0 mg/l. The physicochemical factors were similar to those investigated 10 years ago. However, increased concentration of nitrogenous nutrients initiated ?미 blooming and its process was accelerated to reach eutrophication. Algal blooming was proceeded in March and August.

시스템사고에 근거한 지역아동센터의 지역사회 연계 활성화방안 (Measures to Activate the Community Network of Community Child Centers Based on the Systems Thinking)

The contents of the study are as follows. Firstly, it examines the existing studies on the community network of Community Child Centers and presents the major variables to understand the situation of its community network. Secondly, it analyzes the structure of its causation in order to understand the dynamics of its community network. Lastly, it concludes with the suggestions to activate its community network based on its feedback structure presented in the causal loop diagrams. This study is expected to make a useful and basic material as the first research to dynamically understand the community network issue of the Community Child Centers.

Innovation Policies and Locational Competitiveness : Lessons from Singapore

  • The relationship between innovation policies and locational competitiveness has emerged as an important area in the analysis of economic development, reflecting both the centralisation and decentralisation of globalising economic activities. The underlying spatial and institutional components are subject to a pattern of cumulative causation in which strategic interventions of policy actors exercise a decisive role in shaping competitive advantages, while promoting interactions with local and foreign partners both from the private and public sectors. The Singaporean development experience illustrated these strategic interdependencies of innovation policies and locational competitiveness. Based on her role as a manufacturing and service hub, Singapore is viewed as an infrastructural nodal point which is interconnected to global production networks. Paralleling efforts in the domain of technological innovation, Singapore's policies for locational competitiveness aim at an adaptive harmonisation of the needs of international investors with local developmental objectives. This orientation characterises also current efforts in promoting Singapore as a knowledge agglomeration with a distinct science base, expanding R&D operations and an innovation-driven pattern of economic development. In conclusion, the locational rationale of Singapore's innovation policies provides lessons for dealing with the spatial and institutional implications of technological globalisation.

첨단산업에서의 안전 사고 분석 패턴 추출 모델 연구

  • 안전사고 원인에 대하여 Near-Miss Report 분석을 근거로 하여, 재해원인에 대하여 접근해 보고, 이 Data를 참고로 첨단산업에서의 재해 유형을 분석해보고, 유형에 따른 기여인자를 기존 Human-ware, Hard-ware, System-ware를 구성요소로 해서 첨단산업에서의 각각의 수행인자의 비율 분석을 통한 판단한 결과는 Human-ware와 Hard-ware 비율은 4:1로 나타났고, 첨단사업장에서의 5년간의 사고건수를 근거로 원인에 대한 수행인자의 ANOVA로 분석하여 4개인자에 대한 분산 분석을 도출하였고 이에따른 Loss와 Time과 Accident 관계와 Effect of Intervention관계와 Reason's Accident Causation Model과 Perrow's Normal Accident Theory Model를 연관시켜서 첨단산업에서의 사고이론 Model를 추출해서 첨단산업에서의 안전사고에 대한 유형을 분석해서 사고를 사전에 제거키 위한 새로운 모델을 제시하고자 한다.
