A putative lipolytic enzyme gene, named as est9x, was obtained from a marine microbial metagenome of the South China Sea. Sequence analysis showed that Est9X shares lower than 27% sequence identities with the characterized lipolytic enzymes, but possesses a catalytic triad highly conserved in lipolytic enzymes of the ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ hydrolase superfamily. By phylogenetic tree construction, Est9X was grouped into a new lipase/esterase family. To understand Est9X protein in depth, it was recombinantly expressed, purified, and biochemically characterized. Within potential hydrolytic activities, only lipase/esterase activity was detected for Est9X, confirming its identity as a lipolytic enzyme. When using p-nitrophenol esters with varying lengths of fatty acid as substrates, Est9X exhibited the highest activity to the C2 substrate, indicating it is an esterase. The optimal activity of Est9X occurred at a temperature of $65^{\cric}C$, and Est9X was pretty stable below the optimum temperature. Distinguished from other salt-tolerant esterases, Est9X's activity was tolerant to and even promoted by as high as 4 M NaCl. Our results imply that Est9X is a unique esterase and could be a potential candidate for industrial application under extreme conditions.
Inositols are cyclohexanehexol and they have been known to be nine stereomers. Scyllo-inositol, epi-inositol and muco-inositol could be synthesized from myo-inositol. Scyllo-inositol and epi-inositol were obtained by oxidation and reduction process from myo-inositol. Myo-inositol and epi-inositol were oxidized by treatment, in solution, with dilute hydrogen peroxide. In all cases, only axial hydroxyl groups were oxidized and monoketons were obtained. Reduction of myo-inosose-2 with sodium boron hydride was carried out in $pH2{\sim}3.$ The reduction products were equatorial alcohol but: reduction of DL-epi-inosose-2 by catalytic reduction produced axial alcohol obtained. Inositol could be esterified. Hexa-O-(p-hydroxy benzoyl)-esters of myo-inositol, scyllo-inositol, epi-inositol and muco-inositol were synthesized and their antimicrobial action on microbes were tested for application to food industry. As the results, it was found that the activities of muco-inositol ester was more vigorous than others.
The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites was investigated using carbon nanofiber fillers prepared by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of various carbon-containing gases over Ni and Ni-Cu catalysts. The electrical conductivity of carbon nanofiber which was regarded as the key property of filler for the application of EMI shielding ranged from 4.2 to 22.4 S/cm at a pressure of 10000 psi. The electrical conductivity of carbon nanofiber/PVDF composites ranged from 0.22 to 2.46 S/cm and the EMI SE of those was in the range of 2∼13 dB. The electrical conductivity of carbon nanofibers increased with the increase in heat treatment temperature and time, while the electrical conductivity of the composites increased rapidly at the initial heat treatment and then approached a certain value with the further increase of heat treatment. The SE of the composites showed a maximum at the medium heat treatment and was proportional to the electrical conductivity of the composites. It was concluded that the specific surface area of carbon nanofibers decreased with the continual heat treatment and the specific surface area of filler was an important factor for the SE of the composites.
A series of new chiral [iminophosphoranyl]ferrocenes, {${\eta}^5-C_5H_4-(PPh_2=N-2,6-R_2-C_6H_3)$}Fe{${\eta}^5-C_5H_3-1-PPh^2-2-CH(Me)NMe_2$} (1: R = Me, $^iPr$), {${\eta}^5{-C_5H_4-(PPh_2=N-2,6-R_2}^1-C_6H_3)$}Fe{${\eta}^5-C_5H_3-1-(PPh_2=N-2,6-R_2-C_6H_3)-2-CH(Me)R_2$} (2: $R^1\;=\;Me,\;^iPr;\;R^2\;=\;NMe_2$, OMe), and $({\eta}^5-C_5H_5)Fe${${\eta}^5-C_5H_4-1-PR_2-2-CH(Me)N=PPh_3$} (3:R = Ph, $C_6H_{11}$) have been prepared from the reaction of [1,1'-diphenylphosphino-2-(N,N-dimethylamino) ethyl]ferrocene with arylazides (1 & 2) and the reaction of phosphine dichlorides ($R_3PCl_{2}$) with [1,1'-diphenylphosphino-2-aminoethyl]ferrocene (3), respectively. They form palladium complexes of the type $[Pd(C_3H_5)(L)]BF_4$ (4-6: L = 1-3), where the ligand (L) adopts an ${\eta}^2-N,N\;(2)\;or\;{\eta}^2$-P,N (3) as expected. In the case of 1, a potential terdentate, an ${\eta}^2$-P,N mode is realized with the exclusion of the –=NAr group from the coordination sphere. Complexes 4-6 were employed as catalysts for allylic alkylation of 1,3-diphenylallyl acetate leading to an almost stoichiometric product yield with modest enantiomeric excess (up to 74% ee). Rh(I)-complexes incorporating 1-3 were also prepared in situ for allylic alkylation of cinnamyl acetate as a probe for both regio- and enantioselectivities of the reaction. The reaction exhibited high regiocontrol in favor of a linear achiral isomer regardless of the ligand employed.

Li-doped NiO was synthesized by molten salt method. $LiNO_3$-LiOH flux was used as a source for Li doping. $NiCl_2$ was added to the molten Li flux and then processed to make the Li-doped NiO material. Li:Ni ratios were maintained from 5:1 to 30:1 during the synthetic procedure and the Li doping amount of synthesized materials were found between 0.086-0.190 as a Li ion to Ni ion ratio. Li doping did not change the basic cubic structural characteristics of NiO as evidenced by XRD studies, however the lattice parameter decreased from 0.41769nm in pure NiO to 0.41271nm as Li doping amount increased. Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated using these materials as thick films on alumina substrates. The half surface of each sensor was coated with the Pt catalyst. The sensor when exposed to the hydrogen gas blended in air, heated up the catalytic surface leaving rest half surface (without catalyst) cold. The thermoelectric voltage thus built up along the hot and cold surface of the Li-doped NiO made the basis for detecting hydrogen gas. The linearity of the voltage signal vs $H_2$ concentration was checked up to 4% of $H_2$ in air (as higher concentrations above 4.65% are explosive in air) using Li doped NiO of Li ion/Ni ion=0.111 as the sensor material. The response time T90 and the recovery time RT90 were less than 25 sec. There was minimum interference of other gases and hence $H_2$ gas can easily be detected.

An experimental investigation of a microthruster that uses hydrogen peroxide as a monopropellant is described. The study comprises of preparation method of silver as a catalyst and performance evaluation of a mesoscale reactor. Reduction of silver in $H_2\;at\;500^{\circ}C$ resulted in the best reactivity of all the treatment method tested. A mesoscale reactor was built to find the optimum configuration for full decomposition of propellant. The catalyst bed was made of a glass wafer substrate sputtered with silver and had a length of 20 mm. We measured the conversion rate with varying feed rate of $H_2O_2$ and preheating temperature. With the feed rate of $H_2O_2$, the space time within the reactor varies as well. For the bed length of 20 mm, space time more than 480 s was required for full conversion.

The currently accepted model of membrane structure proposes a dynamic, asymmetric lipid matrix of phospholipids and cholesterol with globular proteins embedded across the membrane to various degrees. Most phospholipids are in the bilayer arrangement and also closely associated with integral membrane proteins or loosely associated with peripheral proteins. Biological functions of membrane, such as membrane-bound enzyme functions and transport systems, are influenced by the membrane physical properties, which are determined by fatty acid composition of phospholipids, polar head group composition and membrane cholesterol content. Polar and non-polar region of the phospholipid molecule can interact, with changes in the conformation of a membrane-associated protein altering either its catalytic activity or the protein's interaction with other membrane proteins. Mammalian dietary studies attempted to change the lipid composition of a few cell membranes have shown comparisons, using essential fatty acid-deficient diets. In recent years, Clandinin and a few other workers have pioneered the study proving the influence of dietary fat fed in a nutritionally complete diet on composition of phospholipid classes of cell membrane. Modulation caused by diet fat was rapid and reversible in phospholipid fatty acyl composition of membranes of cardiac mitochondria, liver cell, brain synaptosome and lymphocytes. These changes were at the same time, accompanied by variety of membrane associated functions controlled by membrane-bound enzymes, tranporter and receptor proteins. The findings suggest the basic concept of the necessity of dietary fatty acid balance if consistency of optimal membrane structural lipid composition is to be maintained, as well as the overall inadequacy of describing the nutritional-biochemical quality of a dietary fat solely by its content of linoleic acid. Furthermore, they give light on the possible application to clinical and preventive medicine.
A maltogenic amylase gene from Lactobacillus gasseri ATCC33323 (LGMA) was expressed in Lactococcus lactis MG1363 using the P170 expression system. The successful production of recombinant LGMA (rLGMA) was confirmed by the catalytic activity of the enzyme in liquid and solid media. The N-terminal amino acid sequencing analysis of the rLGMA showed that it was Met-Gln-Leu-Ala-Ala-Leu-, which was the same as that of genuine protein, meaning the signal peptide was efficiently cleaved during secretion to the extracellular milieu. The optimal reaction temperature and pH of rLGMA ($55^{\circ}C$ and pH 5, respectively) and enzymatic hydrolysis patterns on various substrates (${\beta}$-cyclodextrin, starch, and pullulan) supported that rLGMA was not only efficiently secreted from the Lactococcus lactis MG1363 but was also functionally active. Finally, the branched maltooligosaccharides were effectively produced from liquefied com starch, by using rLGMA secreted from Lactococcus lactis, with a yield of 53.1%.
Reduction of penta-O-acetyl-myo-inosose-2 by catalytic hydrogenation and with sodium-amalgam was carried out in alcohol solution of pH $3{\sim}4$. The former reduction product was axial-alcohol, and the latter equatorial-alcohol. On reduction of penta-O-acetyl-DL-epi-inosose-2 with sodium borohydride and sodium-amalgam in the previous condition, ax.-alcohol and eq.-alcrhol have been obtained. The synthesis of various inositol-p-hydroxybezoate are described. The esters have been characterized by paper chromatography and saponification, and their antimicrobial activities on some microbes were tested for the application of food industry. As the result, it was found that the antimicrobiol activity of epi-inositol ester was superior to its analogues.

Since the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extraordinary material properties, many researchers are trying to make a practical application in various fields [1]. In particular, the high surface area of CNTs was fascinated for nano-template on the catalytic system. $RuO_2$ coated CNTs are useful functional nano-composites in many applications, including super capacitors, fuel cells, biosensors, and field emitters. However, the research of interaction between CNTs and $RuO_2$ was not satisfied with various fields [2]. In this study, we will introduce the change of chemical and electrical state of $RuO_2$/CNTs at different temperatures by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES). The t-MWCNTs used in this experiment were grown on the Ni/TiN/Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition. $RuO_2$ of 4-20 nm in thickness was deposited on the t-MWNTs by sputter. The SRPES measurements were carried out at the 4B1 beamline of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory in Korea. The result of XPS measurement indicates that the deposited $RuO_2$ on the CNTs was reduced into pure Ru at above $300^{\circ}C$. And we confirmed that the effective work function of $RuO_2$/CNTs was decreased with increasing temperature.
