  • One of the major problems on the design of an online database for machine readable data file is on the implementation of MARC format for communication with the Library of Congress or OCLC. Most of the cataloging data to make manual card catalogs are stored on magnetic tapes based on the MARC format at LC or OCLC and are sent to local libraries. Therefore, local libraries can avoid the expensive process of cataloging for the books they own. Instead, they can retrieve the necessary cataloging information from the tape and print out manual card catalogs. A problem with MARC is that it is not designed for databases, but for portability to be read at any type of computer. Therfore, it is not practical to use the format on the development of an online database as long as the database is developed in conjunction with a commercial powerful database package. In this paper a possible methodology to resolve the conflicts between the objective of DBMS and MARC is discussed. It is to satisfy the requirements from a commercial DBMS while leaving a room for MARC to communicate with LC and OCLC.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the problems of describing bibliographic elements such as edition, impression, and year of publication in the current Cataloging Rules, and to present improvements to the KCR and the KORMARC Format. According to changes in the information technology environment in the library, the level and scope of the cataloging that can be provided to users should be adjusted. As data is diversified and descriptive method of metadata develops, the development of bibliographic elements and the change of the descriptive method are changing the framework of the existing standardization. As a research method, we will examine the concept of edition and impression, examine the transition process of description of edition and impression targeting KCR. And we would like to present the methods of bibliographic description to be added or modified through cataloging examples, and examine the format reflected in KORMARC. This study is intended to be limited to the descriptive form of books. The bibliographic elements of the entry in the library must be fully consistent with the bibliographic elements of the material to be catalogued. This study suggests an improvement to the cataloging rules. First, the edition of the cataloging rules shall describe the edition statement and the impression statement. In addition, the description of the year of publication describes the latest year, not the first year of publication of the edition of the material to be catalogued. The descriptive scope of the year of publication is extended to the month of publication. Second, in the KORMARC format, the description of impression in edition statement is given to the identifier in the 250 field, and is numerically described as the second impression. When presenting the month and year of publication, one identifier in the field 260 describes the year of publication and the other identifier describes the month of publication. The description for the month and year of publication is stated the latest month and year on the title page and the colophon of the publication.

  • The purpose of the paper is to review the key factors of automation and information technology which have generally had the first and the most impact on traditional cataloging department and catalogers. Additioansl qualities and skills which the catalogers in this environment will need are indentified. The review is done through the examination of research reports and results of numerous library surveys. The overall climate of change is toward a process of conver gent evolution between catalogers and public service librarians. The heads of technical services departments and several catalogers in eight Korean academic libraries including National Central Library are interviewed to find out the present development of automation and any effect on cataloging staff in terms of work and organizational structure. It is too early to have any such changing impact as the automation is still in its implementing stage. However, they see the future when professional catalogers are expected to serve in much extended role as the automation stages are moving ahead.

  • Because of the creation and transfer of born-digital records, file unit-based record description practices have changed fundamentally. In this study, we analyzed the archival description practices of The National Archives (TNA) to maintain intellectual control in the digital records management environment and to support the access to records of users. TNA has created an archival description based on ISAD(G) but, for describing born-digital records, it changed the guideline for descriptive cataloging practices. As the method of ISAD(G) cannot adhere to born-digital records, the next-generation descriptive standard, Records in Contexts (RiC), is still being developed by ICA. In addition to international efforts, we need to build an archival description system that fits our environment, especially because since the year 2000, TNA's online cataloging system has changed and ISAD(G) has been modified in this process. This study also proposed continuous monitoring of digital archival descriptions, provides an integrated approach to analog records and digital content and strengthens experimentation and cooperation toward an uncertain digital future.

  • It needs to put into practice the systems analysis in the analysis of some operations and status of library for the purpose of systematizing the work of reforming in the new easier form to process, to storage, to retrieve and to make use of the increasing informations and data of library. In this study, some of systems which are generally using in every library was caught in the case study of K university library. Having analyzed them with the two methods of the flowcharting and mathematical analysis, we found the obstructive factors in operation. As the result of this research, it was gained the new system as the alternative one. A. Alternative System B. Advantages of alternative systems 1. In the reference room When it converts the present system into the new system, it can profit 6.771 won/user (13.815won-7.044won=6.771 won). Therefore, a half the average required cost of the present system can be saved. If this saving would be alloted for the cost 33,000won required to make the cataloging cards, it would be taken for 94 days (33,000 won ${\div}$ 6,771 won/user=4,874users. 4,874users ${\div}$ 52users/day=94days) to get it. The saving cost/year by the new system will be 95,417 won, and in the first year the initial cost (33,000won) reduces the saving cost to 62,417won. 2. In the periodical room The average required time for using the materials of the present system is 17 minutes/user and the average required cost/user is 23.775won, while the average required time of the new system is 4 minutes and the average required cost/user is 5.33won. Therefore, the new system has profit 4 times of the present system. Accordingly, it occurs when the dispersed periodical materials get together. 3. In the classification and cataloging When one processes - the oriental books - by the Linear Programming Technique, the maximum of the process can be increased from 11.6 volumes per librarian of the present system to 12 volumes per librarian of the new system increased 0.4 volume in a day, and cataloging by the manual printer can be shorten from 3 minutes per card of the present system to 1.5 minutes per card of the new system. Consequently, we can complete the other operations (books equipment, updating of cataloging cards, etc.) with 141 minutes which are saved in the course of the afore-mentioned works. 4. In the status of collections The average growth rate of 4 years from 1968 to 1971 is 9.825 %, and that of the purchased materials is 6.2% similar to the advanced nations, but it has the different position from 215,000 volumes by the Standard Degree for Establishment of College and University, and the difference between the total collections 151,671 volumes and Dunns' growth model ($N_t=N_oe^{-at}$) claimed by Leimkuhler 155,297 volumes in 1971 is 3,626 volumes, and for the purpose of compensation the difference, we found the fact that it needs to have the increased budget of 24~30% per year, Thus, if the budget of 24~30 % per year. Thus, if the budget would be increased per year as the rate of the afore-mentioned figure, it would be reached at the Standard Degree for Establishment of College and University in 1975, and thereafter, it can be decreased to the lebel which is able to maintain the growth rate of 5~6% per year.

  • The description of preserved resources is one of the requirements in digital preservation. The description is generally created in the format of metadata records, and those records are combined to generate information packages to support the process of digital preservation. However, current strategies or models of digital preservation may not generate information packages in efficient ways. To overcome these problems, this research proposed an internal structure of information packages in digital preservation. In order to construct the internal structure, this research analyzed existing metadata standards and cataloging rules such as Dublin Core, MARC, and FRBR to extract the core elements of resource description. The extracted elements were categorized according to their semantics and functions, which resulted in three categories of core elements. These categories and core elements were manifested by using RDF syntax in order to be substantially applied to combine metadata records in digital preservation. Although the internal structure is not intended to create metadata records, it is expected to provide an alternative approach to enable combining existing metadata records in the context of digital preservation in a more flexible way.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rationale behind the transformation process of unique shophouse spatial organization in Phnom Penh. We selected 20 representative shophouses located in the Chinese district of Phnom Penh according to construction period. A qualitative study methodology was applied and field surveys were conducted that included interviews with residents, photographs, sketches, measurements, collecting historic photos, and cataloging maps. Selected cases were analyzed in terms of: basic house data, urban block analysis, and unit analysis. Cases were then classified into two types: private courtyard shophouse (PCS) and shared courtyard shophouse (SCS). PCS refers to shophouse typology that maintains most of the characteristics of early shophouses while being transformed into a modern multi-story apartment within a limited one bay plot. However, SCS refers to shophouses adapted from the indigenous forms of PCS that evolved into a multi-storey and multi-family housing typology that includes features that might have been adapted from Western apartment buildings such as sharing a big courtyard, staircase and corridors. We conclude that shophouses in Phnom Penh have positively adopted a Western building typology, adapted it to local traditions, and finally formulated a new building type that represent indicators of a modernization process gradually accepted by society.
