  • Silicon heterojunction solar cells can achieve high conversion efficiency with a simple structure. In this study, we investigate the passivation characteristics of VOx thin films as a hole-selective contact layer using ALD (atomic layer deposition). Passivation characteristics improve with iVoc (implied open-circuit voltage) of 662 mV and minority carrier lifetime of 73.9 µs after post-deposition annealing (PDA) at 100 ℃. The improved values are mainly attributed to a decrease in carbon during the VOx thin film process after PDA. However, once it is annealed at temperatures above 250 ℃ the properties are rapidly degraded. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to analyze the chemical states of the VOx thin film. As the annealing temperature increases, it shows more formation of SiOx at the interface increases. The ratio of V5+ to V4+, which is the oxidation states of vanadium oxide thin films, are 6:4 for both as-deposition and annealing at 100 ℃, and 5:5 for annealing at 300 ℃. The lower the carbon content of the ALD VOx film and the higher the V5+ ratio, the better the passivation characteristics.

  • We have studied internal quality including chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetallic inclusion of test materials. We have analyzed tensile strength value, hardness value, impact value etc. In analyzing internal quality, all of the test materials showed typical ferrite+pearlite structure. But nonmetallic inclusion showed oxide and sulfide inclusions in medium carbon steels, and sulfide inclusion is S-free cutting steels. In ca+ S-free cutting steels, the calcium aluminate and sulfide complex inclusion had low-melting points as deformation of sulfide and oxide inclusion is existed. It was found that tensile strength and hardness give maximum value in medium carbon steels, where as minimum in Ca + -free cutting steels. But values of elongation, reduction of area impact are reverse. Fracture surface of impact specimen is ductile in free cutting steels but brittle in medium cabon steels.

  • Currently, the use of carbon steel in a high temperature environment, such atomic reactor, increases. Test piece was heated in electric furnace and the prescribed temperature was controlled within ${\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Debris that falls apart from cracked section due to friction is accumulated inside. Then, as it causes fretting corrosion (formation of oxide layer), it contributes to crack closure.

  • By operation in aqueous environment at high temperature and pressure, the structural materials from Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) cover with protective oxide films, which maintain the corrosion rate in admissible limits. A lot of potential factors exist, which conduct to degradation of the protective films and consequently to intensification of the corrosion processes. The existing experience of different nuclear reactors shows that the water chemistry has an important role in integrity maintaining of the protective oxide films. To investigate the influence of water chemistry (pH, O2 dissolved, $Cl^-$, $F^-$) on corrosion of some structural materials (carbon and martensitic steel, Zr and Ni alloys) and to establish the maximum permissible values, corrosion experiments by static autoclaving and electrochemical methods were performed. The experimental results allowed us to establish the contribution of the water chemistry in initiation and evolution of some accelerated corrosion processes.

  • Nitrogen-atom doped graphene oxide was considered to prevent the dissolution of polysulfide and to guarantee the enhanced redox reaction of sulfur for good cycle performance of lithium sulfur cells. In this study, we used urea as a nitrogen source due to its low cost and easy preparation. To find the optimum urea content, we tested three different ratios of urea to graphene oxide. The morphology of the composites was examined by field emission scanning electron microscope. Functional groups and bonding characterization were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry in an organic electrolyte solution. Compared with thermally reduced graphene/sulfur (S) composite, nitrogen-doped graphene/S composites showed higher electroactivity and more stable capacity retention.

  • Gasoline engines have proven their utility in light, medium and heavy duty vehicles. Concern about long term availability of petroleum and the environment norms by the increased vehicular emission have mandated the search for safe fuel. CNG is an environmentally clean alternative to the existing spark ignition engines with the advantages of minimum change. A higher octane number and a higher self ignition temperature make it an attractive gaseous fuel. The thermal efficiency is better than gasoline for the same engine. The reduced carbon mono oxide, carbon di-oxide, hydrocarbon emissions is a favorable outcome along with a slight increase in $NO_x$ emission when compared with gasoline fuel to a dual fuel mode in the existing spark ignition engines. The result from the experiment shows that CNG could be a potential substitute fuel that maintains performance and emissions characteristics in gasoline engines.

  • Hollow copper oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CuO/MWCNT) composites were fabricated via an optimized infiltration-reduction-oxidation method, which is more facile and easy to control. The crystalline structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared CuO/MWCNT composites deliver an initial capacity of 612.3 mAh·g-1 and with 80% capacity retention (488.2 mAh·g-1) after 100 cycles at a current rate of 0.2 A·g-1. The enhanced electrochemical performance is ascribed to the better electrical conductivity of MWCNT, the hollow structure of CuO particles, and the flexible structure of the CuO/MWCNT composites.

  • An extraction chromatographic method of separating rare earth impurities from high purity $Nd_2O_3$, $Sm_2O_3$, $Gd_2O_3$, $Er_2O_3$, $Dy_2O_3$ and $Yb_2O_3$ was studied by using $HCl-NH_4Cl$ as moving phase and P507 as stationary phase. After the impurities were enriched from the eluate by chelant-activated carbon, the active carbon was ashed and the ignited residue was used to prepare the sample electrode for spark source mass spectrometric determination. The impurities in 99.9999% rare earth oxide can be determined by the proposed method with recovery over 80%.

  • A novel strategy for the simultaneous reduction and functionalization of graphene oxide (G-O) was developed using polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAAH) as a multi-functional agent. The G-O functionalization by PAAH was carried out under basic conditions to catalyze the epoxide ring opening reaction of G-O with abundant amine groups of PAAH. We found that G-O was not only functionalized with PAAH but also reduced under the reaction condition. Moreover, the synthesized PAAH-functionalized G-O sheets were soluble in water and applicable to the synthesis of nanocomposites with gold nanoparticles.

  • Sulphonated polysulphone (SPS) has been synthesized and subsequently applied as binder for graphene oxide (GO)-based electrodes for development of electrochemical supercapacitors. Electrochemical performance of the electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry in 1M Na2SO4 and 1M KOH solution. The fabricated supercapacitors gave a specific capacitance of 161.6 and 216.8 F/g with 215.4 W/kg and 450 W/kg of power density, in 1M Na2SO4 and 1M KOH solutions, respectively. This suggests that KOH is a better electrolyte than Na2SO4 for studying the electrochemical behavior of electroactive material, and also suggests SPS is a good binder for fabrication of a GO based electrode.
