  • New type of syngas generator based on the partial oxidation of biogas in volumetric permeable matrix reformers was suggested as an effective, adaptable and relatively simple way of syngas and hydrogen production for various low-scale applications. The use of biogas as an energy source reduces the chance of possible emission of two greenhouse gases, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$, into the atmosphere at the same time. Its nature of being a reproducible energy source makes its use even more attractive. Parametric screening studies were achieved as air ratio, biogas component ratio, input gas temperature, Steam/Carbon ratio. As the air ratio was low, the production of the hydrogen and carbon monoxide increased in the condition that 3D matrix reformer maintains the stable driving. As it was the simulation biogas in which the carbon dioxide content is high, the flammable range became narrow. And the flammable range was extended if the injected gas was preheated. The stable driving was possible in the low air ratio. The amount of hydrogen production was increased as S/C ratio increased.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will administer a new 0.5% global sulfur cap on fuel content from 1 January 2020, lowering from the present 3.5% limit. Seawater $SO_x$ (sulfur oxide) scrubbing is especially spray scrubbing and a promising alternative to complying with the IMO regulation. However, the ionization of $SO_2$ (sulfur dioxide) and the $H_2SO_4$ (sulfuric acid) formed from $SO_3$ (sulfur trioxide) is proposed to accelerate corrosion of the internal seawater pipe. Apparently, the corrosion of the scrubber seawater piping system occurs in a severe and frequent manner. Hence, in this study, electrochemical measurement and weight loss of carbon steel (used as seawater pipe in most of the ships) in diluted sulfuric acid solution were investigated to determine corrosion rate, corrosion current density, corrosion potential, electrochemical behavior, and impressed-current density. Accordingly, the corrosion rate of carbon steel sheet in various diluted sulfuric acid solutions was observed to be greater than that in natural seawater, thus suggesting the fundamental data to deal with corrosion problems in scrubber seawater pipe.

  • The certification performance issued through an external business is sold to companies subject to the emission trading system allocation, and the company subject to the allocation can secure the quota by converting the purchased external business certification performance into offset credits. In this methodology, when fossil fuels that used existing oil boilers (by oil type) were replaced with boilers using propane gas with a relatively low carbon content, the amount of carbon dioxide emission reduction by oil type was recognized. As an initial analysis to make up for the insufficient quota of large corporations, the amount of carbon reduction emissions and emission rights trading was calculated.

  • A study of hen egg lysozyme extraction using reversed micelles and pressurized CO₂ phase was conducted. The relationship between the lysozyme extraction and water content (W/sub 0/) under the pressurized CO₂ conditions was investigated. The water content of the micellar organic phase was a significant parameter affecting the mass transfer of protein and enzymatic activity in reversed micellar process. It was found that the reversed micelles in the organic phase with pressurized CO₂ were larger than the organic phase without CO₂. Therefore, the extractionrate of lysozyme in the interface of the aqueous phase and the organic phase was increased. W/sub 0/ value was increased at the high surfactant concentration and the extraction rate of lysozyme was enhanced.

  • One of the problems with testing for the presence of $CO_2$ is that the results are not visible. In order to over-come this weak point, a new testing method was developed with BTB indicator equipment, that made the gas visible. After that, the experiment was performed and tested the effects of the new visible equipment. The visible equipment could be adapted to regular class use successfully. Also, it was effective in that it reduced waste of gas, minimized danger potential through use of $CO_2$ canisters and candle-sticks, and also increased knowledge about indicators. The new experimental method and equipment affected the students' interest. It is possible that the students' positive participation was due to their interest in the new apparatus and application of the visual senses. The new system was tested fer its effects on teaching content and helping to produce sustained memory of the content. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of content learning on initial content memory. However, when students in both groups were tested 4 months later, the visual experiment group sustained memory performance, while the other group showed a significant decrease. Generally, boys score higher than girls in terms of interest and participation in experimental activities. In this case, however, there were no difference between groups. It may have been due to introduction of new equipment and different methods from the textbooks. So, this could increase participation in science using various experiments.

  • In order to reduce malic acid in low-alcohol content appel wine $(6{\sim}9%)$ malate-decomposing yeast, Schzosaccharomyces japonicus var. japonicus St-3 was used. Fallen apples before the harvesting season were collected and extraction was made. The apple extract was fortified with sucrose to make final sugar concentration of 18% in case of 9% base wine. High acid content in the primarily fermented apple wine could be reduced by following with malo-alcoholic fermentation using Schizosaccharomyces japonicus var. japonicus St-3 in second half of alcoholic fermentation using Saccharomyces sp. R-11. Secondary fermentation was proceeded at low temperature $(7{\sim}8^{\circ}C)$ for 130 days using Saccharomyces sp. R-11. Prior to the secondary fermentation, two percent of sugar was added to the base wine in order to produce carbon dioxide gas. And each five percent of specially prepared malt extract and hop extract were added to the base wine in order to increase foam stability. Better shelf-life was observed by keeping high carbon dioxide pressure$(2.3{\sim}2.5kg/cm^2)$ in the bottle. It was assured that the better low-alcohol content apple wine could be brewed by the method which we used above.

  • Optimal culture conditions of Spirulina platensis NIES 39 have been established using different types of light sources. Several types of photobioreactors were designed and the increase of biomass, the amount of $CO_2$, fixation and the production of chlorophyll content were studied. The result revealed that the input conditions of a 10 min period per 4 h at the condition of 5% $CO_2$ and 0.1 vvm, were excellent in the growth. The growth showing the maximum biomass accumulation is limited to 1.411 g/L when using the fluorescent bulb and the low powered surface mount device (SMD) type LEDs which were equipped-inside in the photobioreactor. However, the biomass exceeded up to 1.758 g/L level when a high powered red LED (color temperature : 12000 K) photobioreactor system was used. The $CO_2$ fixation speed and rate were increased. Although the total production of chlorophyll content undergoes a proportional increase in the biomass, the net content per dry cell weight (DCW) showed the higher production with a blue LED (color temperature : 7500 K) light than that of any other wavelengths. The carbon dioxide loss was marked as 0.15% of the inlet gas (5% $CO_2/Air$, v/v) at the maximum biomass culture condition.

  • To reduce polarization of electrochemical capacitor based on carbon nanotube, titanium oxide nanoparticles were deposited by ultrasound. The pore distribution of $TiO_2$/CNT nanoparticle exhibited surface area of $341\;m^2g^{-1}$ when $TiO_2$ content was 4 wt %, which was better than that of pristine CNT with surface area of $188\;m^2g^{-1}$. The analyses indicated that titanium oxide (particle diameter < 20 nm) was deposited on the CNT surface. The electrochemical performance was evaluated by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance measurement, and constant-current charge/discharge cycling techniques. The $TiO_2$/CNT composite electrode showed relatively better electrochemical behaviors than CNT electrode by increasing the specific capacitance from $22\;Fg^{-1}$ to $37\;Fg^{-1}$ in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. A symmetric cell assembled with the composite electrodes showed the specific capacitance value of $11\;Fg^{-1}$ at a current loading of $0.5\;mAcm^{-2}$ during initial cycling.

  • This study selected three types of agglomerated wood charcoal (Agglomerated wood charcoal with charcoal powder, Carbonized wood briquette, Ignition-type of perforated charcoal) that are in circulation in Korea among fuel-type wood products and analyzed the fuel characteristics, harmful substance content, and emissions of air pollutants generated by combustion. The first results showed that charcoal-grilled carbon, which is the raw material of charcoal, produced higher CO than saw-billed carbon. The second result is that the emission standards of air pollutants generated by the combustion of molded wood coal are not up to the emission standards of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides in the entire product, compared with the emission criteria of the atmospheric environment preservation method (based on 2019, carbon monoxide: 200 ppm, nitrogen oxides, 150 ppm sulfur oxides: 100 ppm), but the carbon dioxide moulding and carbon dioxide levels were not up. Based on the analysis of combustion gas generated during combustion derived from this study, future research is needed for comparing with the emission standards of pellets, which are wood products for fuel, among the existing biomass burning standards and for reducing carbon monoxide generated during incomplete combustion of agglomerated wood charcoal.

  • In this study, the characteristics of mortar using carbondioxide conversion capture materials (CCMs), fabricated by reacting CO2 with desulfurization gypsum (DG) by-produced from a oil refinery, as a cement mixture. Based on the chemical component and particle size analysis results, it estimated that desulfurized gypsum reacted with carbon dioxide to produce carbonate crystals such as CaCO3. Using CCMs as a cement mixture, physical property and durability analysis were conducted by measuring such as workability, compressive strength, compressive strength ratio after freezing-thawing and accelerated carbonation depth. The experimental results showed that as the content of the admixture increased, workability and compressive strength characteristics decreased. Compressive strength after freezing-thawing and accelerated carbonation depth also showed similar characteristics to the physical property measurement results. In addition, compared to desulfurized gypsum, using CCMs showed better physical properties and durability. This was assumed to be due to differences in the crystal phases of the mixed materials such as free-CaO and CaCO3.
