  • Carbon dioxide ocean disposal is one of the promising options to reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere because the ocean has vast capacity for carbon dioxide sequestration. However, the dissolution rate of liquid carbon dioxide in seawater must be known in advance in order to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the solubility, the surface concentration and the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth are peformed. The results show that the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1,000m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.016 or less. Also, the surface concentration of carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film is about 50% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,500 m in depth and about 60% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,000 m in depth.

  • Carbon dioxide concentration of railroad passenger cabin is obliged to be kept lower than guideline values of 'Indoor air quality guideline for public transportations', but actual carbon dioxide concentration frequently exceeds this guideline value during the morning and evening rush hours. For improving comfortability and satisfaction of passengers, concentration control method using $Al_2O_3$ adsorbents was presented. The adsorbent is made from $Al_2O_3$ and LiOH. $Al_2O_3$ perform as a frame and LiOH as a chemical adsorbent. The adsorbent performance experiment was carried out by measuring concentration change of Carbon dioxide in terms of flow, initial concentration and amount of adsorbent. It is expexted that the obtained results will be used to lower carbon dioxide concentration of railroad passenger cabin.

  • The biological fixation of carbon dioxide using microalgae have many advantages over chemicals and remove carbon dioxide simultaneously. A ketocarotenoid astaxanthin is hyper-accumulated in the green freshwater microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis. In the present study, the combine effects of carbon dioxide concentration and light intensity on the growth of H. pluvilais were investigated. The carbon dioxide concentration above 10% caused a severe inhibition and around 5% is optimal for growth. Adaptation to high concentration of carbon dioxide enhanced the $CO_2$ tolerance. Specific growth rate calculated differently based upon cell number or dry weight because of the distinctive life cycle patterns of H. pluvialis : small-sized motile green cell and thick cell walled red cyst cell. Based on the light dependence of H. pluvialis, internally illuminated air-lift photobioreactor was designed and operated. Gradual increase of light supply gave more active growth and more effective productivity of astaxanthin than constant light supply.

  • Black carbon concentrations were measured along the altitude at various locations using a drone coupled with a small black carbon detector. The measurement locations are Eunseok Mountain, downtown, four places in KOREATECH campus, Byeongcheon, Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, and Chungbu Expressway in Ochang-eup, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The average concentration of black carbon measured in Eunseok Mountain was $1.64{\mu}g/m^3$ and the average concentration near the Chungbu Expressway was measured to be $3.86{\mu}g/m^3$. The average concentrations of four places inside campus ranged from 1.37 to $2.67{\mu}g/m^3$. The concentration of black carbon at all places tended to be slightly decreased according to the altitude, but the influence of pollution source, geometry, wind speed, and wind direction are thought to be larger than the effect of altitude. Effect of air flow caused by drone flight on the measurement of black carbon were investigated and it resulted in that the measurement of BC concentration was affected by less than 5%.

  • High concentration of carbon dioxide in subway cabin may cause various adverse effects on the passengers. Because carbon dioxide is produced by breathing of passengers, carbon dioxide concentration at rush-hours is extremely high. In most cases, the ventilation is not that easy for subway cars due to the high concentration of dust in tunnels. In this study, more practical way to control carbon dioxide in subway car was suggested. The decrease of carbon dioxide concentration was observed when the system was applied to a real subway car. The regenerative method for maintenance-free carbon dioxide control system was also suggested.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of variations in carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature with the vertical change of surface in a grassplot. Field observations were carried out at a grassplot in Gyeongnam Science High School, over four days in August and November, 2015. Continuous observation equipment (GMP343, VAISALA) was installed at the LP (0.1 m from the surface) and UP (1.1 m from the surface) points, and the carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature were measured simultaneously at 1-min intervals. To summarize the results of the observation, August had higher than average concentrations of carbon dioxide, while November showed average air temperatures. Moreover, the concentration of carbon dioxide was higher at the UP point, while the air temperature was higher at the LP point. The correlation coefficient of carbon dioxide concentration between the UP and LP points was 0.80 in August across all the four days, while it was higher in November at 0.58-0.95. The results of the regression analysis of carbon dioxide concentration with air temperature changes for both August and November showed a distinct change at the LP point (R2=0.36-0.76), as compared to the UP point (R2=0.1-0.57). Between the UP and LP points, the carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature regression analysis results indicated that an active exchange was taking place between the two points.

  • The South Korean Ministry of the Environment has revised the laws relating to the management of interior air quality for multiple use facilities, and recommends maintaining carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) concentration in passenger vehicles below 1000 ppm during operation in urban areas of large cities. However, the interior $CO_2$ concentration of passenger vehicles can rapidly increase and exceed 5000 ppm within 30 min, as observed when two passengers are traveling in urban areas of the South Korean city of Jeonju with the air conditioner blower turned off and the actuator mode set to internal circulation mode. With four passengers, $CO_2$ concentration can reach up to 6000 ppm within 10 min. To counter this, when the actuator is set to external mode, $CO_2$ concentration can be maintained below 1000 ppm, even after a long period of running time. As part of the air conditioning system, alkali-treated activated carbon fiber filters are considered to be far superior to the commercial non-woven filters or combination filters currently commonly in use.

  • Porous carbon electrodes with wooden materials are manufactured by molding carbonized wood powder. Electrical properties of the interface for electrolyte and porous carbon electrode are investigated from viewpoint of NaCl electrolyte concentration, capacitance and complex impedance. Density of porous carbon materials is 0.47~0.61 g/$cm^3$. NaCl electrolytic absorptance of the porous carbon materials is 5~30%. As the electrolyte concentration increased, capacitance is increased and electric resistance is decrease with electric double layer effect of the interface. The electric current of the porous carbon electrode compared in the copper and the high density carbon electrode was improved on a large scale, due to a increase in surface area. The circuit current increased as the distance between of the porous carbon electrode and the zinc electrode decreased, due to increase in electric field. Experimental results indicated that the current properties of galvanic cell could be improved by using porous carbon electrode.

  • This study reports on the synthesis of carbon nanofibers via chemical vapor deposition using Co and Cu as catalysts. In order to investigate the suitability of their catalytic activity for the growth of nanofibers, we prepared catalysts for the synthesis of carbon nanofibers with Cobalt nitrate and Copper nitrate, and found the optimum concentration of each respective catalyst. Then we made them react with Aluminum nitrate and Ammonium Molybdate to form precipitates. The precipitates were dried at a temperature of $110^{\circ}C$ in order to be prepared into catalyst powder. The catalyst was sparsely and thinly spread on a quartz tube boat to grow carbon nanofibers via thermal chemical vapor deposition. The characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were analyzed through SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, XPS, and TG/DTA, and the specific surface area was measured via BET. Consequently, the characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were greatly influenced by the concentration ratio of metal catalysts. In particular, uniform carbon nanofibers of 27 nm in diameter grew when the concentration ratio of Co and Cu was 6:4 at $700^{\circ}C$ of calcination temperature; carbon nanofibers synthesized under such conditions showed the best crystallizability, compared to carbon nanofibers synthesized with metal catalysts under different concentration ratios, and revealed 1.26 high amorphicity as well as $292m^2g^{-1}$ high specific surface area.

  • In order to investigate the behavior of particulate carbon and benzo(a)pyrene(B(a)P) in the ambient air, suspended particle matters were collected from April, 1990 to February, 1992, and total carbon(TC), organic carbon(OC), elemental carbon(EC) and B(a)P were measured by an elemental analyzer and a HPLC. The results were as follows the average concentration of TC was 38.6 $\mug/m^3$ and its concentration was higher in winter(45.4 $\mug/m^3$) and fa11(44.3 $\mug/m^3$) than in summer(36.8 $\mug/m^3$) and spring(28.9 $\mug/m^3$). The monthly concentration trends both of EC and OC was similar, but seasonal variation of EC concentrations was larger than that of OC. The average concentration of B (a)P was 2.2 ng/m$^3$, and was higher in winter(4.1 ng/m$^3$) and fall(3.2 ng/m$^3$) than in spring(1.2 ng/m$^3$) and summer(0.6 ng/m$^3$). The seasonal behavior of carbon and B(a)P was to similar except for summer. The correlation coefficient(r) between EC and B(a)P was 0.71, and the correlation coefficient(r) between OC and B(a)P was 0.66.
