  • A comparison study of carbon coating on $LiFePO_4$ was done with two different carbon sources-petroleum pitch and Ketjen black. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis were applied to the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$. $LiFePO_4$ which was carbon-coated with petroleum pitch showed more uniform carbon layer and ordered carbon structure. Such uniformity and ordered structure of carbon coating layer resulted in higher initial discharge capacity and better rate capability.

  • Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) represent a class of non-brittle refractory materials for harsh and extreme environments in aerospace and other applications. The quasi-ductility of these structural materials depends on the quality of the interface between the matrix and the fiber surface. In this study, a manufacture route is described where in contrast to most other processes no additional fiber coating is used to adjust the fiber/matrix interfaces in order to obtain damage tolerance and fracture toughness. Adapted microstructures of uncoated carbon fiber preforms were developed to permit the rapid infiltration of molten alloys and the subsequent reaction with the carbon matrix. Furthermore, any direct reaction between the melt and fibers was minimized. Using pure silicon as the reactive melt, C/SiC composites were manufactured with an aim of employing the resulting composite for friction applications. This paper describes the formation of the microstructure inside the C/C preform and resulting C/C-SiC composite, in addition to the MAX phases.

  • Etch rates of Si and high purity SiC have been compared for various fluorocarbon plasmas. The relative plasma resistance of SiC, which is defined as the etch rate ratio of Si to SiC, varied between 1.4 and 4.1, showing generally higher plasma resistance of SiC. High resolution X-ray photoelectron analysis revealed that etched SiC has a surface carbon content higher than that of etched Si, resulting in a thicker fluorocarbon polymer layer on the SiC surface. The plasma resistance of SiC was correlated with this thick fluorocarbon polymer layer, which reduced the reaction probability of fluorine-containing species in the plasma with silicon from the SiC substrate. The remnant carbon after the removal of Si as volatile etch products augments the surface carbon, and seems to be the origin of the higher plasma resistance of SiC.

  • In this study, we controlled the shape of a carbon layer on gallium oxide templates. Gallium oxide layers were deposited on sapphire substrates using mist chemical vapor deposition. Subsequently, carbon layers were formed using radio frequency plasma chemical vapor deposition. Various shapes of carbon structures appeared according to the fraction of methane gas, used as a precursor. As methane gas concentration was adjusted from 1 to 100%, The shapes of carbon structures varied to diamonds, nanowalls, and spheres. The growth of carbon isotope structures on Ga2O3 templates will give rise to improving the electrical and thermal properties in the next-generation electronic applications.

  • Copper iodide was employed as a modifier for preparation of a new carbon ceramic electrode. For the first time, the catalytic oxidation of amoxicillin (AMX) was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and amperometry methods at the surface of this modified carbon ceramic electrode. The copper iodide modified sol-gel derived carbon ceramic (CIM-SGD-CC) electrode has very high catalytic ability for electrooxidation of amoxicillin. The catalytic oxidation peak current was linearly dependent on the amoxicillin concentration and the linearity range obtained was 100 to 1000 ${\mu}mol\;L^{-1}$ with a detection limit of 0.53 ${\mu}mol\;L^{-1}$. The diffusion coefficient ($D=(1.67{\pm}0.102){\times}10^{-3}\;cm^2\;s^{-1}$), and the kinetic parameter such as the electron transfer coefficient (${\alpha}$) and exchange current density ($j_0$) for the modified electrode were calculated. The advantages of the modified CCE are its good stability and reproducibility of surface renewal by simple polishing, excellent catalytic activity and simplicity of preparation.

  • Fly ashes containing 6.1~16.5 wt% of unburned carbon were treated thermally at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 3 h and thus, the content of unburned carbon was decreased below 2.1 wt%, the range of particle size distribution became narrower and the mean particle size became smaller. Besides, the properties of particles in fly ashes were improved, particularly the particle shape became close to a spherical type. The fluidity of cement pastes containing fly ashes treated previously at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 3 h was increased much than that of cement pastes containing original fly ashes. When the added amount of superplasticizer was over the saturation amount, there was no correlation between the amount of unburned carbon in fly ashes and the apparent viscosity of cement pastes actually. On the contrary, when the added amount of superplasticizer was below the saturation amount, there was a correlation.

  • In order to study the semi-conductive characteristics of carbon black-filled ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composite film, which is used for measuring occlusal force, composite samples with volume ratios of carbon black to EPDM ranging from 30% to 70% were prepared. The process of making a composite film consists of two steps, which involve the preparation of a slurry composition and the fabrication of a thin film using solution casting and a lamination process. To prepare the slurry composition, we dispersed carbon black nanoparticles into an organic solvent before mixing with an EPDM solution in toluene. The mechanical and electrical properties of the resulting carbon black-filled EPDM film were then investigated, and the results showed that the electrical resistance of a film decreases with the increase in the carbon black content. Furthermore, improved elastic recovery was observed after cross-linking the EPDM.

  • Antioxidation characteristics of carbon at high temperature with the co-addition of Al and Si powder in Al2O3-C system refractory were analyzed. The use of surface-modified phosphate carbon as a starting material was found to be very effective in improving the mixing effect of raw materials and antioxidation behavior of carbon. In particular, this effect was dominant at higher temperatures than 130$0^{\circ}C$.
