Plasma carbon blacks of 20~30 nm diameter were synthesized by direct decomposition of natural gas using a hybrid plasma torch system with 50 kW direct current and 4 MHz of radio frequency. The insulating rector which inside diameter of 400 mm and length of 1500 mm, respectively was kept at 300~$400^{\circ}C$ during the preparation. The ultimate analysis of plasma carbon blacks reveals that the raw plasma carbon blacks contains a large quantity of volatile which is mainly consist of hydrogen. Therefore devolatilization of raw plasma carbon blacks were carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ for one hour under nitrogen atmosphere. The devolatilization leads to the decrease in electrical resistivity and surface oxygen functional groups of plasma carbon black significantly. In order to investigate the plasma carbon as a catalyst support, devolatilized plasma black at $900^{\circ}C$ (DPB) supported PtAu catalyst was synthesized by sodium boronhydride reduction method. Electrochemical measurements and direct formic acid fuel cell test indicated that catalytic activity of DPB supported PtAu catalyst for formic acid oxidation was similar to that of Vulcan XC-72 of commercial carbon black supported one.
This research was conducted to estimate the physicochemical characteristics of waste catalyst and its in-process product from recycling and to suggest fundamental data for religious systems such as quality standards. Mo and V contents were increased from the waste catalyst to calcinated material and oxidized material. In the results of a heavy metals leaching test, Pb was not detected in any catalyst, calcinated and oxidized materials. Cu was not detected in the catalyst. However, it was detected in ${\leq}$1.16 mg/l for calcinated material and in 1.34~13.73 mg/l for $MoO_3$ oxidezed material. Concentrations in recycling in-process products (calcinated and oxidized materials) were higher than those of waste catalyst. Oil content of catalyst waste ranged from 0.01-14.03 wt%. Oil contents of calcinated and oxidized materials were greatly decreased compared to the catalyst waste. Carbon and sulfur contents as chemical poisoning material of catalyst waste ranged from 0.33-76.08 wt% and 5.00-22.00 wt%, respectively. The carbon contents of calcinated and oxidized materials showed below 20 wt%. The sulfur content showed below 8wt% for calcinated material and below 0.22 wt% for oxidized material.
We have developed a one-step synthesis of benzofurans from o-iodophenol and various terminal alkynes, by using Pd catalyst supported on nano-sized carbon balls (NCB) under copper- and ligand free conditions. This recyclable catalyst could be reused more than 5 times in the same heteroannulation reaction. The results have demonstrated that diverse 2-substituted benzofurans with tolerant functional groups can be prepared simply and conveniently under these conditions.
In the present work, a new approach is proposed for via interconnects of semiconductor devices, where multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are used instead of conventional metals. In order to implement a selective growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for via interconnect, the buried catalyst method is selected which is the most compatible with semiconductor processes. The cobalt catalyst for CNT growth is pre-deposited before via hole patterning, and to achieve the via etch stop on the thin catalyst layer (ca. 3nm), a novel 2-step etch scheme is designed; the first step is a conventional oxide etch while the second step chemically etches the silicon nitride layer to lower the damage of the catalyst layer. The results show that the 2-step etch scheme is a feasible candidate for the realization of CNT interconnects in conventional semiconductor devices.
Methane carbon dioxide reforming (MCDR) is a promising way of utilizing greenhouse gas for hydrogen-rich fuel production. Compared with other types of reactors, Compact Reformers (CRs) are efficient for fuel processing. In a CR, a thin solid plate is placed between two porous catalyst layers to enable efficient heat transfer between the two catalyst layers. In this study, the physical and chemical processes of MCDR in a CR are studied numerically with a 2D numerical model. The model considers the multi-component gas transport and heat transfer in the fuel channel and the porous catalyst layer, and the MCDR reaction kinetics in the catalyst layer. The finite volume method (FVM) is used for discretizing the governing equations. The SIMPLEC algorithm is used to couple the pressure and the velocity. Parametrical simulations are conducted to analyze in detail the effects of various operating/structural parameters on the fuel processing behavior.
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with uniform diameter and controlled size were prepared from catalytic decomposition of $\textrm{C}_{2}\textrm{H}_{2}$ with Ni-MgO catalyst treated by mechanochemical (MC) process. The properties of Ni catalyst, such as size, distribution and morphology, can be governed by tuning grinding time in MC process. As a result, size and structure of CNFs can be tailored. The effect of grinding time to the as-grown CNFs was studied. CNFs with diameter from 10-70 nm were synthesized. CNFs with bundle formation sharing one tip and twisted CNFs were also synthesized with catalyst treated by MC process.

This paper dealt with the manufacturing of binary alloy catalyst and showed simple electrochemical method for determing catalytic activity of oxygen reduction in acid or alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst was prepared by impregnating transition metal salts on platinum or silver particles adsorbed before on carbon paper substrate. The electrochemical characteristics of the catalysts was investigated with carbon paper electrode or PTFE-boned porous electrode and then cathodic current densities and tafel slopes were compared. As a result, of all binary catalysts utilized in this work, Pt-Fe, Pt-Mo showed better oxygen reduction activity than pure platinum catalyst in acid electrolyte and Ag-Fe, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Ni-Bi-Ti catalyst did than pure silver catalyst in alkaline electrolyte. The current density of Pt-Fe electrode in acid electrolyte was one and half times higher than that of Pt electrode(~500mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 0.7VvsNHE).

Growth behaviors of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied in terms of catalyst by using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Catalyst films deposited on various substrates are agglomerated into nano-islands during the heat-up to the growth temperature. In particular, we focus on the direct investigation of the microstructures of the CNTs and the interface of CNTs-catalyst-substrate using cross-sectional TEM. We investigate relationship to the subsequent CNTs growth on each nucleation site. The growth of CNTs depends on the catalyst itself but not the silicide formation between the catalyst and the substrate.
The synthesis of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) by a chemical vapor deposition method using three different plant oils as precursors is presented. Because there are four parameters involved in the synthesis of CNM (i.e., the precursor, reaction temperature of the furnace, catalysts, and the carrier gas), each having three variables, it was decided to use the Taguchi optimization method with the 'the larger the better' concept. The best parameter regarding the yield of carbon varied for each type of precursor oil. It was a temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ + Ni as a catalyst for neem oil; $700^{\circ}C$ + Co for karanja oil and $500^{\circ}C$ + Zn as a catalyst for castor oil. The morphology of the nanocarbon produced was also impacted by different parameters. Neem oil and castor oil produced carbon nanotube (CNT) at $900^{\circ}C$; at lower temperatures, sphere-like structures developed. In contrast, karanja oil produced CNTs at all the assessed temperatures. X-ray diffraction and Raman diffraction analyses confirmed that the nanocarbon (both carbon nano beads and CNTs) produced were graphitic in nature.

Recently, carbon nanotube has been investigating for field emission display ( (FED) applications due to its high electron emission at relatively low electric field. However, the growing of carbon nanotube generally requires relatively high temperature processing such as arc-discharge (5,000 ~ $20,000^{\circ}C$) and laser evaporation (4,000 ~ $5,000^{\circ}C$) methods. In this presentation, low temperature growing of carbon nanotube by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using nickel catalyst which is compatible to conventional FED processing temperature will be described. Carbon n notubes with average length of 100 run and diameter of 2 ~ $3\mu$ill were successfully grown on silicon substrate with native oxide layer at $550^{\circ}C$using nickel catalyst. The morphology and microstructure of carbon nanotube was highly depended on the processing temperature and nickel layer thickness. No significant carbon nanotube growing was observed with samples deposited on silicon substrates without native oxide layer. This is believed due to the formation of nickel-silicide and this deteriorated the catalytic role of nickel. The formation of nickel-silicide was confirmed by x-ray analysis. The role of native oxide layer and processing parameter dependence on microstructure of low temperature grown carbon nanotube, characterized by SEM, TEM XRD and R없nan spectroscopy, will be presented.
