Carbon rich fly ash and their nanostructures

  • Carbon rich fly ash was recently reported to have compositions that are ideal for use as a precursor and catalyst for carbon nanotube growth. This fly ash powder is mostly composed of pure carbon, predominantly present as sp2. In this work, the effect of sonication time on the morphology and structural properties of carbon rich fly ash particles is reported. The obtained results show that ultrasound treatment is an effective tool for producing ultrafine particles/fragments with higher porosity, which might be suitable for the adsorption of gasses. Moreover, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) of this fly ash were produced in parallel using the ball milling technique, and were evaluated as reinforcements for epoxy based composites. These CNPs have almost spherical shapes with particle sizes of around 30 nm. They were found to have strong C=O carbonyl group bonds, which might be generated during the ball milling process. The tensile testing results of a fly ash CNP reinforced epoxy composite showed significant improvements in the mechanical properties, mainly in the stiffness of the polymer. The stiffness value was increased by around 23% of that of neat epoxy. These CNPs with chemically active groups might also be useful for other applications.

  • This paper explains manufacturing process and experimental studies on a composite carbody of Korean tilting train. The composite carbody with length of 23m was manufactured as a sandwich structure composed of a 40mm-thick aluminium honeycomb core and 5mm-thick woven fabric carbon/epoxy face. In order to evaluate structural behavior and safety of the composite carbody, the static load tests such as vertical load, end compressive load, torsional load and 3-point support load tests have been conducted. These tests were performed under Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) 17105 standard. From the tests, maximum deflection was 12.3mm and equivalent bending stiffness of the carbody was 0.81$\times$10$^{14}$ kgf$\cdot$mm$^{2}$ Maximum stress of the composite body was lower than 12.2$\%$ of strength of the carbon/epoxy. Therefore, the composite body satisfied the Japanese Industrial Standard.

반복하중을 받는 틸팅열차용 복합재 차체구조의 내구성 평가 (Durability Evaluation of a Composite Carbody for Korean Tilting Train under Repeated Loadings)

  • This rafer explains a durability test of a large train car body made of carbon/epoxy composite material. The composite car body with the length of 23m was manufactured as a sandwich structure composed of an aluminum honeycomb core and CF1263 woven fabric carbon/epoxy faces. In order to evaluate durability of the composite car body, it was excited by two 500kN capacity hydraulic actuators installed underneath the body bolster. The natural frequency of the composite car body under full weight condition was found to be 4.33Hz. Based on this result, the excitation frequency and displacement of 5Hz and ${\pm}1.0mm$, respectively, were used as inputs for the durability test. The test was conducted for $2{\times}10^6$ cycles. During the test, the nondestructive tests using X-ray radiography and dye penetration method was performed to determine the presence of the cracks. Upon completion of the test, no cracks were found.

  • 본 논문에서는 편향각을 갖는 직물 복합재료 시편을 제작하여 정적 압축실험과 피로실험을 수행하고 그 결과를 비교하였다. 직물구조의 차이에 따른 압축거동을 평가하기 위해 동일한 섬유와 기지로 구성된 일방향 복합재료와 평직 복합재료의 적층순서를 동일하게 조절한 시편을 준비하였다. 정적 압축실험을 통해 편향각을 갖는 시편의 강성과 강도를 측정하였고, 측정된 강도를 바탕으로 압축강도 예측식을 제안하였다. 피로실험을 통해 복합재료의 직물 구조의 차이에 의한 피로수명의 변화를 관찰하였으며, 편향각의 변화와 하중조건에 따른 피로수명의 차이를 비교하였다.

전자파 반사재료로 사용되는 탄소섬유/에폭시 복합재료의 적층 탄소섬유 방향성이 마찰특성에 미치는 영향 (Tribological Properties of Laminated Fiber Orientation in Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites for Reflecting Material of the Electromagnetic Wave)

  • 전자파 반사재료로 사용되는 탄소섬유/에폭시 복합재료의 탄소섬유 배향이 마찰특성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 마찰 시, 상대 마찰 면과 탄소 섬유/에폭시 복합재료의 적층 방향이 수직인 경우가 수평인 경우에 비해 우수한 마찰특성을 나타내었다. 이는 마찰 면과 복합재료의 적층 방향이 수평인 경우, 에폭시와 탄소섬유의 delamination이 상대적으로 많이 일어나기 때문이다. 탄소섬유 배향에 따른 마찰특성은 마찰 면과 복합재료의 적층 방향이 수직인 경우, 탄소 섬유가 단일 방향으로 배향된 $0/0^{\circ}$의 복합재료가 다방향 배향인 $0/45/90/-45^{\circ}$$0/90^{\circ}$ 복합재료에 비해 상대적으로 뛰어난 마찰특성을 나타내었다. 이는 탄소섬유의 배향 방향에 따라 마찰 면에 접촉하는 탄소섬유의 접촉면적이 변화되고 그 결과, 마찰에 의한 탄소섬유와 에폭시의 debonding 정도가 변화되기 때문이다. 이와는 달리 마찰 면과 적층 방향이 수평인 경우탄소섬유에 가해지는 응력의 종류에 따라 다른 마찰특성을 나타내며 인장응력이 작용하는 $0/90^{\circ}$로 탄소섬유가 배향된 복합재료가 가장 우수한 마찰특성을 갖는다. 마찰면과 탄소섬유 배향에 따라 마찰속도는 마찰계수에 영향을 미치지 못하는 반면 마멸지수와는 비례관계가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

니켈 박막 첨가에 따른 탄소섬유 에폭시 복합재료의 층간 계면 특성 (Interlaminar Shear Strength of Carbon Fiber Epoxy Composite with Nickel Film)

  • 탄소섬유 에폭시 복합재료에 다양한 두께의 니켈 박막을 첨가한 복합재료를 제작하여 층간 계면 특성을 평가하고자 한다. 상온에서 스퍼터를 이용하여 니켈 박막을 프리프레그 위에 증착하고 이를 중간층으로 하여 복합재료를 제작하였다. 니켈 박막이 첨가된 탄소섬유 에폭시 복합재료는 니켈 박막 미첨가 탄소섬유 에폭시 복합재료에 비해 층간 전단 특성이 향상되었음을 확인하였다. 층간 파괴거동 분석을 위해 주사전자현미경으로 파단면을 관찰하였으며 니켈 박막이 복합재료 내에 층간 결합력을 높여 계면 특성을 향상시키며 전단시험 시 전단에너지를 흡수하는 역할을 한다는 것을 확인하였다.

Development of Carbon Nanotube-copper Hybrid Powder as Conductive Additive

  • A conductive additive is prepared by dispersing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on Cu powder by mechanical milling and is distributed in epoxy to enhance its electrical conductivity. During milling, the MWCNTs are dispersed and partially embedded on the surface of the Cu powder to provide electrically conductive pathways within the epoxy-based composite. The degree of dispersion of the MWCNTs is controlled by varying the milling medium and the milling time. The MWCNTs are found to be more homogeneously dispersed when solvents (particularly, non-polar solvent, i.e., NMP) are used. MWCNTs gradually disperse on the surface of Cu powder because of the plastic deformation of the ductile Cu powder. However, long-time milling is found to destroy the molecular structure of MWCNTs, instead of effectively dispersing the MWCNTs more uniformly. Thus, the epoxy composite film fabricated in this study exhibits a higher electrical conductivity than 1.1 S/cm.

두께가 두꺼운 카본화이버/에폭시 적층복합재의 해저환경에서의 압축특성 (Compressive behavior of thick carbon fiber/epoxy composites in a submarine environment)

  • The compressive characteristics of thick carbon/epoxy composite in a submarine environment was investigated in this study. The specimens made of thick carbon fiber/epoxy composite that were immersed into seawater Jar thirteen months. the seawater content at saturation was about $1.2\%$ of the specimen weight. Compressive tests have been performed in different hydrostatic pressures of 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 270 MPa. The results showed that the compressive elastic modulus increased about $12.3\%$ as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 200 MPa. The results also showed that compressive fracture strength increased $28\%$ and compressive fracture strain increased $8.5\%$ as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 270 MPa.

탄소강 볼트 체결된 GECM(Graphite Epoxy Composite Material)/Al 판재의 구성 부재의 부식 거동 (Corrosion Behavior of the parts of Carbon Steel Bolted GECM(Graphite Epoxy Composite Material)/Al plates)

  • This work focused on corrosion of carbon steel bolted GECM/Al parts in tap water and NaCl solutions. In tap water and NaCl solutions, open circuit potential of GECM and its potentials in a series of carbon steel bolt>Ti>Al became active. Regardless of test materials, open circuit potentials in tap water were noble, and increasing NaCl concentration, its potentials became active. Immersion test of single specimen showed that no corrosion occur in Ti and GECM. In tap water, carbon steel bolt didn't show red corrosion product and in chloride solutions, corrosion rate in 1% NaCl solution was greater than its rate in 3.5% NaCl solution and red corrosion product in 1% NaCl solution was earlier observed than that in 3.5% NaCl solution. It seems that this behavior would be related to zinc-coatings on the surface of carbon stee l bolt. On the other hand, aluminium was corroded in tap water and chloride solutions. Corrosion of aluminium in tap water was due to the presence of chloride ion in tap water by sterilizing process.

양성자 교환막 연료전지용 탄소 복합재료 분리판 개발 (Development of Carbon Composite Bipolar Plates for PEMFC)

  • 양성자 교환막 연료전지 (PEMFC) 시스템은 환경 친화적인 전력 공급원으로 많은 잠재적 용도를 가지고 있다. 탄소섬유 복합재료 분리판은 산성환경에서 내부식성이 우수하며 높은 비강도와 비강성을 갖지만, 상대적으로 낮은 전기전도도로 인하여 PEMFC의 효율을 떨어뜨린다. 본 연구에서는 분리판의 전기 저항을 감소시키기 위하여 전기 전도성 입자(흑연 분말과 카본 블랙)를 탄소-에폭시 복합재료 프리프레그에 도포하였다. 전기 저항과 기계적 특성을 기존의 시험 방법을 사용하여 측정하였으며, 개발된 탄소 복합재료 분리판의 단위 셀 성능평가를 실시하여 기존의 분리판과 비교하였다.
