  • The effect of carbon addition on the general corrosion behavior of high-chromium cast iron (HCCI) was studied by a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) or electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), or electrochemical polarization techniques in 0.1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 + 0.05 mol dm-3 HCl at room temperature. The addition of 2.1-2.8 wt% carbon to HCCI increased the fraction of eutectic austenite and eutectic carbide phases, while that of HCCI decreased the fraction of the primary austenitic phase. Potentiostatic polarization of the HCCI at -0.35 VSSCE or 0.0 VSSCE resulted in preferential general corrosion of the primary austenitic or eutectic austenitic phases, respectively. The decrease in corrosion current density and the shift in noble corrosion potential direction with increasing carbon content in the HCCI indicated that the fraction and the chemical composition of austenitic (primary and eutectic) and carbide phases were strongly related to the general corrosion behavior of the HCCI.

  • After the addition of yttrium aluminum garnet of 2, 5, 10 mol% as a sintering aid, $\alpha$-silicon carbides were prepared by a liquid-phase sintering at $1850^{\circ}C$, and the microstructural evolution was investigated during sintering as functions of liquid-phase amount and sintering time. The highest apparent density in each compositions was obtained in specimens sintered for 2 h, and the percentage of weight loss increased with sintering time. By increasing the amount of sintering aid (yttrium aluminum garnet), the rate of grain growth during sintering decreased, but the apparent density of sintered body increased. The phase transformation from 6H-SiC to 4H-SiC was partially observed in specimens sintered for a long time, and so, a few rod-like grains were observed.

  • The aim of this work is to show the way of manufacturing the SiC mechanical seal at the low temperature of 130$0^{\circ}C$ using clay and frit as source of secondary phase. $\alpha$-SiC and $\beta$-SiC powder which showed different distribution of particle were used as starting materials, i.e. average particle size of $\alpha$-SiC was larger than that of $\beta$-SiC. The mechanical and tribological properties of two groups of specimen, i.e. one contained mainly larger $\alpha$-SiC powder and the other mainly fine particle $\beta$-SiC, were measured. The specimen consisted of larger $\alpha$-SiC exhibited lower density flexural strength and wear resistance is comparison with these of sample containning mainly $\beta$-SiC . This difference could be originated from the dependence of capillary force on the particle size. For the larger SiC particle, the liquid phase may not fill the whole pores during sintering, due to low capillary force, whereas the liquid phase can infiltrate into the small ores surrounded small $\beta$-SiC particle. Thus, the course of high flexural strength and high wear resistance of specimen prepared using small particles can be explaced from the easy infiltration of liquid phase.

  • The dissolution and precipitation of Nb, which has been known as strong carbide-forming element, play a key role in controlling phase transformation kinetics of microalloyed steels. In this study, we analyzed both numerically and experimentally the precipitation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and its effect on the austenite decomposition during cooling. Nb precipitation in austenite matrix could be predicted by the thermo-kinetic software MatCalc, in which interfacial energy between precipitate and matrix is calculated. The simulated precipitation kinetics fairly well agrees with the experimental observations by TEM. Austenite decomposition, which is strongly affected by Nb precipitation during cooling, was measured by dilatometry and was modeled on the basis of a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmorgorov(JMAK) equation. It was confirmed that the dissolved Nb delays the austenite decomposition, whereas, the precipitated Nb accelerates phase transformation during the austenite decomposition.

  • Nanosized WC and WC-Co powders were synthesised by chemical vapor condensation(CVC) process using the pyrolysis of tungsten hexacarbonyl(W(CO)$_6$) and cobalt octacarbonyl(Co$_2$(CO)$_8$). The microstructural changes and phase evolution of the CVC powders during post heat-treatment were studied using the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, and ICP-MS. CVC powders were consisted of the loosely agglomerated sub-stoichimetric WC$_{1-x}$ and the long-chain Co nanopowders. The sub-stochiometric CVC WC and WC-Co powders were carburized using the mixture gas of CH$_4$-H$_2$ in the temperature range of 730-85$0^{\circ}C$. Carbon content of CVC powder controlled by the gas phase carburization at 85$0^{\circ}C$ was well matched with the theoretical carbon sioichiometry of WC, 6.13 wt%. During the gas phase carburization, the particle size of WC increased from 20 nm to 40 nm and the long chain structure of Co powders disappeared.

  • Microstructural evolution of Pt-aluminide coated Ni-based superalloy has been investigated with ductilization heat treatment. The Pt coat was prepared on the superalloy and then aluminide coating was conducted using a pack cementation process. Samples were heat-treated at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and the microstructure and element analysis were preformed. A various precipitated compounds were observed within the coating layer and the diffusion region in the Pt-aluminide coating and heat treatment, indicating that the bi-phase compounds of $PtAl_2$ and NiAl were performed during the Pt-aluminide coating, whereas $M_{23}C_6$, MC, $Ni_3Al$ and ${\sigma}$ phases were precipitated in the inter-diffusion region. The bi-phase compounds of $PtAl_2$ and NiAl were transformed into the single phase compound of $PtAl_2$ with the heat treatment, increasing the amount of carbide and ${\sigma}$ phase.

  • Carbon/carbon composites (C/C) have been widely studied in the aerospace field because of their excellent thermal shock resistance and specific strength at high temperature. However, they have the problems that is easily oxidized and deteriorated under atmospheric environment. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the CVD coating of ultra-high-temperature ceramics to C/C has become an important technical issue. In this study, thermodynamic calculations were performed to TaC CVD coating on C/C by FactSage 6.2 program. The Ta-C phase diagrams were constructed with the results of thermodynamic calculations in the Ta-C-H-Cl system. Based on the Ta-C phase diagram, the experimental conditions were designed to confirm the deposition of various phases such as TaC single phase, TaC + C and $TaC+Ta_2C$ by varying the composition of Ta/C ratio. The deposited films were found to be in good agreement with the predicted phases.

  • The widespread use of TiC-based cermets as cutting tools, thin-film, ultracapacitors, nozzles, and bearings is primarily due to exhibit combination of excellent mechanical properties such as low density, high hardness, and stiffness. The TiC cermets were synthesized by high energy ball milling, which includes binder metal (Ni), carbides (WC and Mo2C), wherein the present study focus on the relationship between the core-rim structure, phase constitution, and mechanical properties. Here, using in situ TEM, we clearly observed the behavior of adjacent core-rim formation from the solid-phase reaction with grain refinement of the TiC phase control of both the milling time and lattice formation. Also, we proposed that mechanically alloyed core-rim structure can affect oxidation resistance of TiC-Mo2C-WC-Ni cermets strongly related to activation energy attributed to TiC particle size. The mechanical properties of TiC-Mo2C-WC-Ni cermets suggest the hardening effect is not considered only grain refinement, but rather is solid solution strengthening and particle-dispersion hardening. The present study paves the relation to the formation behavior of both TiC hard phase and core-rim structure due to the mechanical powder synthesis of novel TiC-based cermets.

  • We report the feasibility of TaC production via self-propagating high temperature synthesis, and the influence of the initial green compact density on the final composite particle size. Experiments are carried out from a minimum pressure of 0.3 MPa, the pressure at which the initial green body becomes self-standing, up to 3 MPa, the point at which no further combustion occurs. The green density of the pellets varies from 29.99% to 42.97%, as compared with the theoretical density. The increase in green density decreases the powder size of TaC, and the smallest particle size is observed with 1.5 MPa, at $10.36{\mu}m$. Phase analysis results confirm the presence of the TaC phase only. In the range of 0.3-0.5 MPa, traces of unreacted Ta and C residues are detected. However, results also show the presence of only C residue in the matrix within the pressure range of 0.6-3.0 MPa.

  • Nano Infiltration Transient Eutectic Phase - Silicon Carbide (NITE-SiC) and $SiC_f/SiC$ composite have been fabricated by a Hot Pressing (HP) process, using SiC powder with an average size of about 30nm. Alumina ($Al_2O_3$) and Yttria ($Y_2O_3$) were used for additives materials. These mixed powders were sintered at the temperature a of $1300^{\circ}C$, $1650^{\circ}C$, $1800^{\circ}C$ and $1900^{\circ}C$ under an applied pressure of 20MPa. And unidirection and two dimension woven structures of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites were prepared starting from Tyranno SA fiber. Densification of microstructure gives an effect to density. Specially, Densification Mechanism basically is important from the sintering which use the HP. In this study, the densification of NITE-SiC and $SiC_f/SiC$ composite mechanism by a press displacement appears investigated. The mechanism on the densification of each sintering temperature was investigated. The each step is shows a with each other different mechanism quality.
