Spatial distributions of alloying elements of an Fe-based amorphous ribbon with a nominal composition of $Fe_{75}C_{11}Si_2B_8Cr_4$ were analyzed through the atom probe tomography method. The amorphous ribbon was prepared through the melt spinning method. The macroscopic amorphous natures were confirmed using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Atom Probe (Cameca LEAP 3000X HR) analyses were carried out in pulsed voltage mode at a specimen base temperature of about 60 K, a pulse to base voltage ratio of 15 %, and a pulse frequency of 200 kHz. The target detection rate was set to 5 ions per 1000 pulses. Based on a statistical analyses of the data obtained from the volume of $59{\times}59{\times}33nm^3$, homogeneous distributions of alloying elements in nano-scales were concluded. Even with high carbon and strong carbide forming element contents, nano-scale segregation zones of alloying elements were not detected within the Fe-based amorphous ribbon. However, the existence of small sub-nanometer scale clusters due to short range ordering cannot be completely excluded.
In the present study, the focus is on the effect of cobalt oxide powder in the carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fine TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under flowing argon atmosphere. Changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. Titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder desalted at $600^{\circ}C$ had a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;Co_{3}O_4$. And the one desalted at $800^{\circ}C$ had a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;CoTiO_3$. In the case of the former powder, the reduction of cobalt oxide powder in the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder occurred at lower temperature than the latter one. However, the carbothermal reduction of titanium dioxide powder in the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder with a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;Co_{3}O_4$ occurred at higher temperature than the one with a mixture of $TiO_2\;and\;CoTiO_3$. And also, the former powder showed a lower TiC formation ability than the latter one.
To investigate the difference of Texture exhibited on interproximal enamel surface with each different stripping method and the susceptibility of proximal enamel to demineralization after stripping and the application of a topical fluoride go] and sealant, one hundred human premolars, which were Previously extracted for orthodontic reasons were evaluated by means of Scanning electron microscopy and laser fluorescence. The results were as follows : 1. No matter what the initial stripping instrument was the furrows that resulted from all the stripping methods were not completely removed by careful polishing. 2. Among the enamel surfaces that were treated with three different initial abrasive instruments, followed by the same polishing method (Sof-$Lex^{(r)}$ disks), the enamel surfaces that were treated with 700 crosscut carbide bur showed the smoothest surfaces. 3. The stripped teeth, no matter what the initial stripping instrument was, were less resistant to initial demineralization than untreated teeth. But no difference in caries susceptibility according to differently stripped methods was found (p<(0.001). 4. Teeth treated with APF-gel or sealant were mote resistant to demineralization than those treated without other treatment after stripping (p<0.001). 5. Comparing groups treated with APF-gel to groups treated with sealant, the former was more resistant to demineralization than the tatter (p<0.05). In conclusion, enamel surfaces that were stripped jnterproximally were less resistant to demineralization even though various attempts were made to produce smooth, self-cleaning enamel surfaces. Therefore, additional treatment-sealant or calcifying/ fluoridating solution To the stripped enamel surfaces is recommended.
Effects of rf power, pressure, sputtering gas composition, and substrate temperature on the deposition rate of the $WC_x$ coatings were investigated. The effects of rf power and sputtering gas composition on the hardness and corrosion resistance of the $WC_x$ coatings deposited by reactive sputtering were also investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analyses were performed to determine the structures and compositions of the films, respectively. The hardnesses of the films were investigated using a nanoindenter, scanning electron microscopy, ana a salt-spray test, respectively. The deposition rate of the films was proportional to rf power and inversely proportional to the $CH_4$ content of $Ar/CH_4$ sputtering gas. The deposition rate linearly increased with increasing chamber pressure. The hardness of the $WC_x$ coatings Increased as rf power increased. The highest hardness was obtained at a $Ar/CH_4$ concentration of $10 vol.\%$ in the sputtering gas. The hardness of the $WC_x$ film deposited under optimal conditions was found to be much higher than that of the electroplated chromium film, although the corrosion resistance of the former was slightly lower than that of the latter.
Austenitic stainless steel castings using expandable polystylene(referred to hereafter as EPS) patterns are often affected by distinctive defects associated with incomplete decomposition of the EPS as the molds are filled with metal. The quality of the castings, with particular reference to carbon pick-up in austenitic stainless steel is further influenced to a significant extent by such factors as reduced pressure, the additive by adding $Na_2CO_3$ in coating. The steel composition and microstructure were examined at the surface layer of castings, at depths of 1mm, by taking successive layers of swarf and analysis. In experiments, the carburizing atmosphere was neutralized, showing that the coating performed efficiently by decomposing almost instantly on heating and liberating $CO_2$. The upper parts of castings obtained using EPS patterns were slightly higher in carbon pick-up than other parts. Comparing the 316L and 304 stainless steel castings, qualitative and quantative differences could be found between the carbon pick-up behaviours as influence of the carbon content and alloying elements. Carbide former such as Cr makes carbon more soluble in the steel. This must make carbon pick-up in the surface layer but at the same time richer in carbon especially in the 304 stainless steel castings.

Fatigue tests were performed in various simulated body environments reflecting various factors (such as body fluids, artificial saliva) relevant within a living body. First, the fatigue limit under a simulated body environment (artificial saliva) was evaluated and the governing factors of implant fatigue strength were looked into by observing the fracture mode. The fatigue life of an implant decreased in the artificial saliva environment compared with that in the ringer environment. Furthermore, in the artificial saliva environment, the implant fracture mode was fatigue failure of fixture as opposed to the abutment screw mode in the ringer environment. In the fatigue test, corrosion products were observed on the implant in the simulated body environment. A larger amount of corrosion products were generated on the artificial saliva specimen than on the ringer specimen. It is thought that the stronger corrosion activity on the artificial saliva specimen as compared with that on the ringer specimen led to an overall decrease of fatigue life of the former specimen. In the case of the implant with a nitrided abutment screw eliminated hardened layer (TixN), a several times increase in fatigue life is achieved in comparison with tungsten carbide-coated implants.
SiC-based ceramic composites are currently being considered for use in fuel cladding tubes in light-water reactors. The joining of SiC ceramics in a hermetic seal is required for the development of ceramic-based fuel cladding tubes. In this study, SiC monoliths were diffusion bonded using a Ti foil interlayer and additional Si powder. In the joining process, a very low uniaxial pressure of ~0.1 MPa was applied, so the process is applicable for joining thin-walled long tubes. The joining strength depended strongly on the type of SiC material. Reaction-bonded SiC (RB-SiC) showed a higher joining strength than sintered SiC because the diffusion reaction of Si was promoted in the former. The joining strength of sintered SiC was increased by the addition of Si at the Ti interlayer to play the role of the free Si in RB-SiC. The maximum joint strength obtained under torsional stress was ~100 MPa. The joint interface consisted of $TiSi_2$, $Ti_3SiC_2$, and SiC phases formed by a diffusion reaction of Ti and Si.
The purpose of this report is to prepare a data for the economic evaluation on the Goobong Limestone Mine which is located at the south-eastern corner of the Yongchun Quadrangle scaled in 1:50,000. The accessibility from the mine to railroad was considered in two ways. One is to Dodam Station on Central Railway Line and the other is to reach Songjung-ni village which is near Sangyong Station on Hamback Railway Line. The distance of the former way is 26.7km and the later is 24.2km. Geologically the mine is situated near the base of the Greast Limestone Series which strikes generally $N25^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}E$. The series comprises six different formations from older to younger; Pungchon Limestone Formation and Whajol Formation of Cambrian age, and Dongjum Quartzite Formation, Dumudong Formation, Maggol Limestone Formation and Goseong Formation of lower to middle Ordovician age. 82 samples; 48 from Pungchon Limestone Formation, 11 from Dumudong Formation, 15 from Maggol Limestone Formation and 8 from Goseong Formation, were taken from the series in the crossed direction to the general trend of the series as shown in geological map. They were chemically analyzed on the components of CaO, MgO, $SiO_2$, $R_2O_3(Al_2O_3+Fe_2O_3)$ and ignition loss as shown in table 2, table 3, table 4, and table 5. As seen from the tables, among the formations of the series, middle to upper parts of the Pungchon Limestone Formation and middle and upper parts of the Dumudong Formation have chemical composition as available source for the raw material of cement industry, not only that but also the part of the Pungchon Formation was highly evaluated as source for the flux of iron smelting and the raw material of carbide manufacturing because of its high purity of calcium carbonate.

In order to improve the performance of electrodeposited diamond-nickel composite, surface modification of diamond particles was carried out using powder immersion reaction assisted coating (PIRAC). Titanium and chromium were selected as coating elements, which are known as carbide former. With respect to the powder elements, various phases were formed on diamond; metallic Ti and TiC for Ti powder, $Cr_3C_2$ for Cr powder, and TiC and $Cr_3C_2$ for Ti-Cr mixed powder. Surface modified diamond particle showed higher specific surface area, especially Ti coating induced considerable increase of specific surface area. The increase of specific surface area suggests increase of surface roughness, and that was confirmed by surface observation using FE-SEM. In addition, wear properties of diamond-nickel composite including surface modified diamonds were improved, and Ti coated diamond showed the highest performance. The wear property of diamond-nickel composite is dependent on adhesion strength between diamond particle and nickel layer. Therefore, surface modification of diamond particle by PIRAC increasing surface roughness is effective to improve the properties of diamond-nickel composite.
