In the present work, the effects of cutting parameters on surface roughness parameters (Ra), tool wear parameters (VBmax), tool vibration (Vy) and material removal rate (MRR) during hard turning of AISI 4140 steel using coated carbide tool have been evaluated. The relationships between machining parameters and output variables were modeled using response surface methodology (RSM). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to quantify the effect of cutting parameters on the studied machining parameters and to check the adequacy of the mathematical model. Additionally, Multi-objective optimization based desirability function was performed to find optimal cutting parameters to minimize surface roughness, and maximize productivity. The experiments were planned as Box Behnken Design (BBD). The results show that feed rate influenced the surface roughness; the cutting speed influenced the tool wear; the feed rate influenced the tool vibration predominantly. According to the microscopic imagery, it was observed that adhesion and abrasion as the major wear mechanism.
Thorium dioxide (ThO2)-silicon carbide (SiC) composite fuel pellets were fabricated via the spark plasma-sintering (SPS) method to investigate the role of the addition of SiC in enhancing the thermal conductivity of ThO2 fuel. SiC particles with an average size of 1㎛ in 10 and 15 vol% were used to manufacture the composite pellets. The changes in the composites' densification, microstructure and thermal conductivity were explored by comparing them with pure ThO2 pellets. The structural and microstructural characterization of the composite pellets has revealed that SPS could manufacture high-quality composite pellets without having any reaction products or intermetallic. The density measurement by the Archimedes principles and the grain size from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis has indicated that the composites have higher densities and smaller grain sizes than the pellets without SiC addition. Finally, thermal conductivity as a function of temperature has revealed that sintered ThO2-SiC composites showed an increase of up to 56% in thermal conductivity compared to pristine ThO2 pellets.
In this study, TiC/steel metal matrix composites were fabricated by powder metallurgy process using Fealloy powders with 3 wt.% Cr and 10 wt.% Cr, respectively, as matrix material. Subsequently, the composite samples were heat treated by the annealing and quenching-tempering(Q-T), respectively, to understand the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the composites. The correlation between microstructure and structural strength depending on the chromium content and the heat treatment conditions was studied through tensile, compressive, and transverse rupture test and microstructural analysis. In the case of TiC/steel composite containing 10 wt.% Cr, the tensile strength and transverse rupture strength at room temperature were significantly lowered by the influence of coarse chromium carbide formed at the TiC/steel interface. On the other hand, both TiC/steel composites containing 3 wt.% Cr and 10 wt.% Cr showed much higher compressive strength of about 4 GP after quenching-tempering compared to the annealed specimens regardless of the presence of the chromium carbide.
The effect of a heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel 713C alloy vacuum investment castings were investigated. The microstructure of the as-cast state was observed, showing well-developed dendrite structures and distributed carbide particles and solidified massive precipitates in the grain or grain boundary during solidification, in this case the γ′ phase and MC particles. During a heat treatment, the γ phase matrix was reinforced by solid solution elements, carbide particles from the film morphology precipitated along the grain boundary, and many micro-precipitates of second γ′ phases 0.2 ㎛~2 ㎛ in size were newly formed in the γ phase matrix according to SEM-EDS analysis results. The tensile strength at a high temperature (850℃) decreased slightly becoming comparable with the room-temperature result, while the hardness value of the specimen after the vacuum heat treatment increased by approximately 19%, becoming similar to that of the as-cast condition. However, the impact values at room temperature and low temperature (-196℃) were approximated; this alloy was mostly not affected by an impact at a low temperature. In the observations of the fracture surface morphologies of the specimens after the tensile tests, the fractures at room temperature were a mix of brittle and ductile fractures, and an intergranular fracture in the inter-dendrite structure and some dimples in the matrix were observed, whereas the fractures at high temperatures were ductile fractures, with many dimples arising due to precipitation. It was found that a reinforced matrix and precipitates of carbide and the γ′ phase due to the heat treatment had significant effects, contributing greatly to the excellent mechanical properties.

The Ni-base superalloy CM247LC was directionally solidified (DS) using the Bridgman-type furnace to understand the effect of the chill plate on the microstructural evolution, such as dendrite arm spacing, microporosity, and MC-type carbide. The DS process was also modeled by the PROCAST to predict the solidification rate, thermal gradient, and resultant cooling rate in the entire length of the DS specimen. Due to the quenching effects of chill plate, four distinct areas were found to form in the specimen, in which the solidification rate was changed, during DS at a given withdrawal rate of 0.083 mm/s. Among the microstructural features investigated, the dendrite arm spacings and average size of the MC-type carbide near the chill plate were found to be influenced by the quenching effect of the chill plate. However, no significant influence was found on the size and volume fraction of microporosity, and the volume fraction of the MC-type carbide. The relationship between the microstructural features and the solidification variables was also analyzed and discussed on the basis of a combination of experimental and modeling results.

For depth machining in die and mold, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is used generally. To make deep hole and deep shape efficiently, cemented carbide endmill for depth machining is necessary. For this purpose, cemented carbide endmill was designed using design of experiment (DOE). To improve cutting performance, endmill was coated with multilayer surface treatment, TiAlCrSiN and TiAlCrN, for higher wear resistance. In order to evaluate the endmill, Transverse Rupture Strength (TRS) test was tried for investigating the relationship between surface treatment and strength in endmill body. Scratch test was also used for measuring adhesion force of each surface treatment. To evaluate hardness of surface treatment, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) analysis was carried out. Wear test was executed for characteristics of each surface treatment in high temperature. Consequently, TiAlCrSiN was superior to the TiAlCrN coating in case of high temperature environment such as cutting.
This study investigates the microstructure and wear properties of cermet (ceramic + metal) coating materials manufactured using high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process. Three types of HVOF coating layers are formed by depositing WC-12Co, WC-20Cr-7Ni, and Cr3C2-20NiCr (wt.%) powders on S45C steel substrate. The porosities of the coating layers are $1{\pm}0.5%$ for all three specimens. Microstructural analysis confirms the formation of second carbide phases of $W_2C$, $Co_6W_6C$, and $Cr_7C_3$ owing to decarburizing of WC phases on WC-based coating layers. In the case of WC-12Co coating, which has a high ratio of $W_2C$ phase with high brittleness, the interface property between the carbide and the metal binder slightly decreases. In the $Cr_3C_2-20CrNi$ coating layer, decarburizing almost does not occur, but fine cavities exist between the splats. The wear loss occurs in the descending order of $Cr_3C_2-20NiCr$, WC-12Co, and WC-20Cr-7Ni, where WC-20Cr-7Ni achieves the highest wear resistance property. It can be inferred that the ratio of the carbide and the binding properties between carbide-binder and binder-binder in a cermet coating material manufactured with HVOF as the primary factors determine the wear properties of the cermet coating material.

The organic-inorganic composite membrane in polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have several fascinating technological advantages such as a proton conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical properties. As the inorganic filler, silicon carbide (SiC) fiber have been used in various fields due to its unique properties such as thermal stability, conductivity, and tensile strength. In this study, composite membrane was successfully fabricated by modified-silicon carbide fiber. Modified process, as a novel process in SiC, takes reaction by phosphoric acid after oxidation process (generated homogeniusly $SiO_2$ layer on SiC fiber). The mechanical property which was conducted by tensile test of the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was better than that of Aquivion casting membrane as well as ion cxchange capacity(IEC) and proton conductivity. In addition, the single cell performance was observed that the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was approximately $0.2A/cm^2$ higher than that of a Aquivion casting electrolyte membrane and electrochemical impedance was improved with the charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of different smear layer preparations on the dentin permeability and microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of 2 self-etching adhesives (Clearfil SE Bond [CSE] and Clearfil Tri-S Bond Universal [CTS]) under dynamic pulpal pressure. Materials and Methods: Human third molars were cut into crown segments. The dentin surfaces were prepared using 4 armamentaria: 600-grit SiC paper, coarse diamond burs, superfine diamond burs, and carbide burs. The pulp chamber of each crown segment was connected to a dynamic intra-pulpal pressure simulation apparatus, and the permeability test was done under a pressure of 15 cmH2O. The relative permeability (%P) was evaluated on the smear layer-covered and bonded dentin surfaces. The teeth were bonded to either of the adhesives under pulpal pressure simulation, and cut into sticks after 24 hours water storage for the µTBS test. The resin-dentin interface and nanoleakage observations were performed using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical comparisons were done using analysis of variance and post hoc tests. Results: Only the method of surface preparation had a significant effect on permeability (p < 0.05). The smear layers created by the carbide and superfine diamond burs yielded the lowest permeability. CSE demonstrated a higher µTBS, with these values in the superfine diamond and carbide bur groups being the highest. Microscopic evaluation of the resin-dentin interface revealed nanoleakage in the coarse diamond bur and SiC paper groups for both adhesives. Conclusions: Superfine diamond and carbide burs can be recommended for dentin preparation with the use of 2-step CSE.
In this work, an elastic-plastic stress analysis has been conducted for silicon carbide fiber reinforced magnesium metal matrix composite beam. The composite beam has a rectangular cross section. The beam is cantilevered and is loaded by a single force at its free end. In solution, the composite beam is assumed perfectly plastic to simplify the investigation. An analytical solution is presented for the elastic-plastic regions. In order to verify the analytic solution results were compared with the finite element method. An rectangular element with nine nodes has been choosen. Composite plate is meshed into 48 elements and 228 nodes with simply supported and in-plane loading condations. Predictions of the stress distributions of the beam using finite elements were overall in good agreement with analytic values. Stress distributions of the composite beam are calculated with respect to its fiber orientation. Orientation angles of the fiber are chosen as $0^{circ},\;30^{circ},\;45^{circ},\;60^{circ}\;and\;90^{circ}$. The plastic zone expands more at the upper side of the composite beam than at the lower side for $30^{circ},\;45^{circ}\;and\;60^{circ}$ orientation angles. Residual stress components of ${\sigma}_{x}\;and \;{\tau}_{xy}$ are also found in the section of the composite beam.
