  • In order to develop a self-propelled microendoscope, the frictional resistance of the capsule-type endoscope inside the intestine should be understood. In this work the frictional resistance behaviors of capsules with different designs were experimentally investigated using a pig intestine. It was found that cylindrical capsule design had the least frictional resistance. Also, the resistance increased as the speed of the capsule motion was decreased. It is expected that the results of this work will be used to design the optimum propulsion system for the microendoscope.

  • We explored the dynamic motions and the lateral equilibrium positions of an elastic capsule in channel flow at moderate Reynolds number varying Re, aspect ratio, size ratio, membrane stretching and bending coefficient. The transition of tank-treading/swinging to tumbling motion was observed in the simulations and the transition of dynamic motions for capsules resulted in different trend of the variation in the lateral equilibrium positions. Though other conditions were similar, the capsule with tumbling motion migrated closer to the wall than that with tank-treading motion.

  • Chitosan/alginate capsules were formed by electrostatic interactions and had appropriated mechanical strength, permeability to albumin, and stability to hepatocytes. Rat hepatocytes were isolated and immobilized in chitosan/alginate capsules. During the encapsulation process with hepatocyte, 10% of viability was decreased mainly due to the low pH of the chitosan solution. Among various capsule fabrication methods, the chitosan-alginate capsule showed the highest mechanical strength. Addition of collagen in the capsule with hepatocytes enhanced hepatic metabolism as well as the cell viability for 2 weeks of culture. The hepatocyte in the capsule without collagen decreased the viability to 10% for 2-week cultures.

  • Capsule free hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) of 12 mol% $CeO_2-88 mo% ZrO_2 (12CeO_2-88ZrO_2)$ powder was conducted at 1100~$1200^{\circ}C$ using the powder crystallized in supercritical methanol followed by supercritical drying. Porous $12CeO_2-88ZrO_2$ ceramics with ~35% open porosity, micropore diameter of ~23 nm and a narrow pore size distribution were fabricated by capsule free hot isostatic pressing at $1100^{\circ}C$. The porosity increased with decrease in HIPing temperature and was accompanied by a steady decrease in fracture strength.

  • Gelatin soft capsules, manufactured by the press through package(PTP) process, are widely used in the production of multivitamin dietary supplements and other health functional foods. Gelatin capsules can prevent light and air from having a direct contact with the contents in the capsule, and the nutrients inside the capsules are preserved without any loss. In the present study, on the basis of the results on the safety of gelatin capsules. The parameters investigated included degradation of the capsules before their shelf life, capsule deformation, and changes in specific nutrients. Moisture and heat in the production and storage environments of the capsules caused the gelatin to swell and attach some of the inorganic salts in the vitamin contents. Nutritional component analysis showed that B1, B5, B9, and B12 contents were decreased, while mineral elemental analysis shown calcium, chloride, and zinc compound were found to be infused into the gelatin of the capsule shell.

  • This study was carried to investigate the usefulness of the radiopaque material as the GI transition and disintegration test of enteric coated capsules radiologically. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The GI transition times that the enteric coated capsules pass through the pylorus were that the time of the first capsule was 210 minutes and the time of the last capsules was more than 300 minutes. Therefore, the GI transition times largely differ from each animal and each enteric coated capsule. 2. The disintegration times of enteric coated capsules were similar in vitro test and in vivo test. 3. The GI transition and disintegration test of enteric coated capsules using barium sulfate, radiopaque material for the gastrointestinal track, was useful to investigate the times that the capsules passed through the pylorus and disintegrated in intestinal track.

  • In this study, a novel wideband conformal thin antenna is presented for endoscopic capsule application at the 915 MHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The thickness of the antenna is only 0.2 mm which can be wrapped inside a capsule's inner wall. By cutting meandered slots on patch, open end slots on ground and utilizing long arm, the proposed antenna can obtain significant size reduction. The net volume of the proposed antenna including substrate and superstrate is only $37.4mm^3$ ($187mm^2$ surface area). This conformal antenna has shown good performance through simulation and measurement with maximum gain of -23 dBi and wide bandwidth from 137 MHz - 205 MHz depending on different environment. In addition, the effect of internal materials specially metallic battery is discussed briefly.

  • Unlike wired endoscopy, capsule endoscopy requires additional time for a clinical specialist to review the operation and examine the lesions. To reduce the tedious review time and increase the accuracy of medical examinations, various approaches have been reported based on artificial intelligence for computer-aided diagnosis. Recently, deep learning-based approaches have been applied to many possible areas, showing greatly improved performance, especially for image-based recognition and classification. By reviewing recent deep learning-based approaches for clinical applications, we present the current status and future direction of artificial intelligence for capsule endoscopy.
