  • Most recent seismic design codes include Response Modification Factor(RMF) for determining equivalent lateral forces. The RMF is used to reduce the linear elastic design spectrum to account for the energy dissipation capacity, overstrength and damping of the structure. In this study the RMF is defined as the ratio of the absolute maximum linear elastic base shear to the absolute maximum nonlinear base shear of a structure subject to the same earthquake accelerogram. This study investigates the effect of hysteretic model, as well as target ductility ratio and natural period on duct based RMF using nonlinear dynamic analyses of the SDOF systems. Special emphasis is given to the effects of the hysteretic characteristics such as strength deterioration and stiffness degradation. Results indicate that RMFs are dependent on ductility, period and hysteretic model.

  • A series of test on concrete-filled composite columns was preformed to evaluate structural performance under axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. It was presented that concrete-filled composite columns had high strength, high stiffness and large energy-absorption capacity on account of mutual confinement between the steel plate and filled-in concrete. A cross section analysis procedure developed to predict the moment-curvature relation of composite columns was proven to be on accurate and effective method. The ductility factor and the response modification factor were evaluated for the seismic design of concrete-filled composite columns. It was shown that concrete-filled composite columns could be used as a very efficient earthquake-resistant structural member.

  • The situation frequently occurs in which the input torque capacity of the converter should be changed. It is known that the modification of the ou angles of the torque converter elements is suitable for such situation with diameter of flow path of the converter maintained. But so far it has been, predict correctly the converter characteristics as well as the effects of oulet torque capacity in the past numerical methods. In the present numeric introducing the interrow mixing planes, the torque capacity was satifactorily and it was shown that the torque capacity could be effectively changed by the oulet blade angles of pump and stator.

  • In this paper, change of load carrying capacity of bridges with time was analyzed referring to the safety inspect data stored in the KISTEC. From this study, it was known that the capacity is rated differently by various parameters such as inspector's subjective. Accordingly, an improved method, in this paper, is suggested which can correct deviation due to several uncertainties involved in rating process. The suggested method can be utilized for efficient maintenance of bridges such as cycles and determination of priority of retrofit, and estimation of service life etc.

  • A recent development, a concrete-filled steel(CFS) pier is an alternative to a reinforced concrete bridge pier in an urban area, because of its fast construction and excellent ductility against earthquakes. The capacity of CFS piers has not been used to a practical design, because there is no guide of a seismic design for CFS piers. Therefore, the guide of a seismic design value is derived from tests of CFS piers in order to apply it to a practical seismic design. Steel piers and concrete-filled steel piers are tested with constant axial load using quasi-static cyclic lateral load to check ductile capacity and using the real Kobe ground motion of pseudo-dynamic test to verify seismic performance. The results prove that CFS piers have more satisfactory ductility and strength than steel piers and relatively large hysteretic damping in dynamic behaviors. The seismic performance of steel and CFS piers is quantified on the basis of the test results. These results are evaluated through comparison of both the response modification factor method by elastic response spectrum and the performance-based design method by capacity spectrum and demand spectrum using effective viscous damping. The response modification factor of CFS piers is presented to apply in seismic design on a basis of this evaluation for a seismic performance.

  • Pinching is an important property of reinforced concrete member which characterizes its cyclic behavior. In the present study, numerical studies were performed to investigate the characteristics of pinching behavior and the energy dissipation capacity of flexure-dominated reinforced concrete members. By investigating existing experiments and numerical results, it was found that flexural pinching which has no relation with shear action appears in RC members subject to axial compression force. However, members with specific arrangement and amount of re-bars, have the same energy dissipation capacity regardless of the magnitude of the axial force applied even though the shape of the cyclic curve varies due to the effect of the axial force. This indicates that concrete as a brittle material does not significantly contribute to the energy dissipation capacity though its effect on the behavior increases as the axial force increases, and that energy dissipation occurs primarily by re-bars. Therefore, the energy dissipation capacity of flexure-dominated member can be calculated by the analysis on the cross-section subject to pure bending, regardless of the actual compressive force applied. Based on the findings, a practical method and the related design equations for estimating energy dissipation capacity and damping modification factor was developed, and their validity was verified by the comparisons with existing experiments. The proposed method can be conveniently used in design practice because it accurately estimates energy dissipation capacity with general design parameters.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior and capacity assessment of circular spiral reinforcement concrete bridge piers used in high strength concrete. The displacement ductility, response modification factor(R), effective stiffness and plastic hinge region etc. was used to assess the seismic behavior and capacity of circular spiral reinforcement concrete bridge piers. The experimental variables of bridge piers test consisted of amount and spacing, different axial load levels. From the quasi-static tests on 9 bridge piers and analysis, it is found that current seismic design code specification of transverse confinement steel requirements and details may be revised.

  • Recently, many existing bridges has been evaluated for maintenance and protection of collapse. In this study, field measurement according to truck loads tests on the reinforce concrete T beam bridge was carried out. Comparing the results of load test and structural analysis using the moments of inertia of gross section, crack section and effective section, and the moments of inertia of section considering depth of crack, it is conclude that the evaluation of load carrying capacity using the stress modification factor from structural analysis using the moments of inertia of gross section is more rational than using the other moments of inertia of sections.

  • Near field ground motions contain distinct, large amplitude pulses in both velocity and displacement. This paper presents an investigation on the characteristics of near filed earthquakes and their effects on seismic demands. For this purpose 20 sets of near field ground motion and 20 sets of far filed ground motion are compared with respect to Linear Elastic Response Spectrum(LERS), Response Modification Factor(R), Inelastic Response Spectrum(IRS), and performance point of Capacity Spectum Method(CSM).

  • In current seismic design code, steel moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment frames. In the case of special moment frames which have large R-factor, economic design is possible by reducing the design lateral force. However, there is difficulty for practical application due to constraints such as strong column-weak beam requirement. This study evaluated if steel intermediate moment frame could maintain enough seismic capacity when the R-factor is increased from 4.5 to 6. As for the analytical models, steel moment frames of 3 and 5 stories were categorized into four performance groups according to seismic design category. Seismic performances of the frames were evaluated through the procedure based on FEMA P695. FEMA P695 utilizes nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) and nonlinear dynamic analysis(incremental dynamic analysis, IDA). In order to reflect the characteristics of Korean steel moment frames on the analytical model, the beam-column connection was modeled as weak panel zone where the collapse of panel zone was indirectly considered by checking its ultimate rotational angle after an analysis is done. The analysis result showed that the performance criteria required by FEMA P695 was satisfied when R-factor increased in all the soil conditions except $S_E$.
