  • Purpose: This study analyzes the operating characteristics of a lithium ion capacitor that can be used as a standby power supply in an emergency, and determines whether the standby power supply is abnormal even by measuring the voltage using a linear proportionality characteristic during charging and discharging. The aim is to provide an experimental basis that can be done. Method: As a method for this study, first, analyze the operation principle and characteristics of the existing backup power supply and lithium ion capacitor, and then measure the voltage of the lithium ion capacitor according to the configuration and system block diagram of the induction lamp used in the experiment. We proceed with the test of the measured value of discharge power for each voltage band to check the amount of power held by the battery and the operation test experiment using induction lamps. Results: Just by checking the charging voltage using the linear proportional characteristics of lithium ion capacitors, it provides a basis for accurately inferring the effective operating time of induction lamp lamps. Conclusion: In the event of a disaster, the lithium ion capacitor is used as a spare power supply for emergency induction lamps to prevent complete discharge of emergency induction lamps, to prevent the problem of performing normal operation of the standby power supply, and to use only a simple voltage measurement to reserve power. It was intended to suggest many uses for evacuation equipment application in the future by making it possible to check whether the device is abnormal.

  • Recently, as the demand of the environmental-friendly energy storage system such as an electric double-layer condenser increases, that of the bidirectional charger/discharger for the systems also increases. However, when charging/discharging mode-change occurs, the charger/discharger employing a bi-directional DC-DC converter with a commercialized analog controller has a complex circuit scheme, and a poor transient response. On the other hand, if a single digital controller is used for the bi-directional mode, the system performances can be improved by application of an advanced power-processing algorithm. In the paper, an environmental-friendly power storage systems including an Electric Double Layer Capacitor(EDLC) banks were developed with a bi-directional buck-boost converter and a digital signal processor (TMS320F28335). A simulation test-bed was realized and tested by MATLAB Simulink, and the hardware experiment was performed which shows that the dynamic response was improved such as the simulation results.

  • Electric power trains receive electric power from overhead cables via a pantograph system. Power collector system in trains increase the cross section of tunnel and require a massive coreless filter reactor in propulsion inverter because of the power disturbance by contact loss phenomenon of a train. In this paper we proposed a wireless train which can run to next station with charging energy of ultra-capacitor module block. We designed DC-DC converter to charge and discharge ultra-capacitor modules by using Next Train running test results and confirm the feasibility of the proposed system through simulation.

  • This study introduces a new topology to decrease the voltage stress experienced by a 13.56 MHz electrical variable capacitor (EVC) circuit with an asymmetrical switch structure applied to the impedance matching circuit of a radio frequency (RF) plasma system. The method adopts a symmetrical switch structure instead of an asymmetrical one in each of the capacitor's leg in the EVC circuit. The proposed topology successfully reduces voltage stress in the EVC circuit due to the symmetrical charging and discharging mode. This topology can also be applied to the impedance matching circuit of a high-power and high-frequency RF etching system. The target features of the proposed circuit topology are investigated via simulation and experiment. Voltage stress on the switch of the EVC circuit is successfully reduced by more than 40%.

  • This paper proposes a test device designed for developing a high-voltage multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC). The proposed topology consists of an energy recovery circuit for charging/discharging capacitor, a flyback converter, and a boost converter for supplying power and a bias voltage application to the energy recovery circuit. The energy recovery circuit designed with a half-bridge converter has auxiliary switches operating before the main switches to prevent excessive current from flowing to the main switches. A prototype has been designed to verify the reliability of target capacitors following the voltage fluctuation with a frequency range below 65 kHz. To conduct high root mean square (RMS) current to the capacitor as a load, the MLCC test was conducted after the topology verification was completed through the film capacitor as a load. Through the agreement between the RMS current formula proposed in this paper and the MLCC test results, the possibility of its use was demonstrated for high-voltage MLCC development in the future.

  • An analytical and experimental design procedure is described for the Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) System with a view to fuel saving ann reduction of gas exhaustion and maintenance need. Specifically, the input and output voltage and current of a given ignition coil were calculated by using a simplified circuit model for the discharging system. The results were compared with the experimental results, from which ratings of the charging capacitor, the SCR and the diodes and the required output valtage of the DC.DC converter were determined so as to satisfy the optimum ignition conditions. Protection circuits for excessive dv/dt and di/dt for the SCR were also analyzed and the results were compared with the observed results, which facilitate selection of the SCR and design of the protection circuit and the trigger circuit. Also, design of the DC.DC converter was simplified based on the analysis and experimental results of the behavior of the converter, An experimental, yet practical CDI system was built, which showed satisfactory performance in the laboratory and field tests. The results were also reported.

  • In order to level electric power of the photovoltaic and wind-turbine system and ensure fast response of the fuel-cell and micro-turbine, the energy storage is required in the microgrid system. In this paper, a simplified simulation model of the battery energy storage for charging method with IUIa is developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The model consists of e.m.f.(electromotive force), internal resistor and overvoltage capacitor. A method for deciding parameters of the model on a case-by-case basis is proposed. The developed model can be used in the simulation of a complicated system such as a microgrid system.

  • Recently, there has been considerable interest in electromagnetic pulse (EMP) source for no lethal directed energy weaponry applications. The compactness of the Marx generator, coupled with its ability to be powered by battery technology, makes it a viable handled impulse source. The marx generator has 2 stages. Each stage was constructed one charging capacitor, two electrodes and one charging resistor. A inductance structure is used in order to improve the switching performances fo the whole generator. The experiments of rise time in pure gas and mixtures of gases were described. The experimental results show that the rise time characteristics of the marx generator can be controlled through varying insulation gas.

  • This paper describes a rapid pulsed power charging system for pulsed power application. It is capable of charging 35kJ/s energy up to 0.47uF 25kV within 3ms and maximum pulse repetition rate of 300 pps can be achieved. The charger is designed based on three-phase series resonant inverter followed by air cooled set-up transformers thus it has many advantages of lower weight, small size and high efficiency compared with large bulky traditional pulse charger system. Detail design procedure of resonant inverter and high voltage transformers is explained. Experimental results carried out at different condition and its results shows 90% efficiency at full load condition.

  • Recently the researches on Modular Multi-level Converter (MMC) are being highlighted because high quality and efficient power transmission are key issues in the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system. This paper proposes an improved pre-charging method for the sub-module capacitors in MMC that operates in Nearest Level Control (NLC) modulation. The proposed method does not require additional circuits or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques. The feasibility of proposed method was verified through computer simulations for a scaled 3-phase 10kVA MMC with 12 sub-modules per each arm. Hardware experiments with a scaled prototype were performed in the lab to confirm the simulation results.
