The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of tapered columns with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass of rotatory inertia with translational elastic support at the other end. The column model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered columns subjected to a subtangential follower force is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. And the bisection method is used to calculate the critical divergence/flutter load. After having verified the results of the present study, the frequency and critical divergence/flutter load are presented as functions of various nondimensional system parameters.

The extension of existing RC buildings is a challenging process, which requires efficient connection between existing and new materials to guarantee load transferring between the lap-spliced longitudinal columns' reinforcement. Therefore, the length of the columns' starter bars is a crucial factor, which decisively affects the seismic response of the new columns. In particular, when the length of the starter bars is short, then the length of the lap splices of reinforcement is inadequate to ensure load transfer between steel bars and concrete, with an indisputable detrimental impact on the seismic behaviour of the columns. Moreover, in most of the existing RC buildings the column starter bars are of particularly short length, while they have probably been bent, cut or corroded. In the present study, the effectiveness of both welded rebar and mechanical splices of reinforcement in ensuring load transferring between the starter bars and the longitudinal reinforcement of the new column was experimentally evaluated. Four cantilever column subassemblages were constructed and subjected to earthquake-type loading. Three of the specimens were used to examine different types of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), while in the fourth subassemblage mechanical splices were tested. The hysteretic response of the columns was evaluated and compared to the behaviour of a fifth specimen with continuous reinforcement, tested by Kalogeropoulos and Tsonos (2019). Test results clearly demonstrated that the examined types of SMAW were equally satisfactory in ensuring the ductile seismic performance of the columns, while the mechanical splices found to be more susceptible to exhibit slipping of the bars.
Experimental and analytical work was conducted to investigate the relations of axial force and deformational capacity of concrete-filled square steel tube columns. The test series consisting of 36 columns were tested under the constant axial load and horizontal cyclic load. The axial force of the columns that resisted under the cyclic lateral load was defined as a certified strength of limit axial force. The analytical model was defined as a cantilever beam-column. The axial force of the beam-column that resisted under the cyclic lateral load was defined as an accumulated certified strength of limit axial force. The purpose of this study is to investigate the certified strength of limit axial force of concrete-filled steel tube beam-columns, which were subjected to both axial and lateral load condition corresponding to a given constant rotation angle. Another purpose of this study is to discuss the comparison of the certified strength of limit axial force of concrete and the accumulated certified strength of limit axial force of concrete-filled steel tube columns.

Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica and buckling load of cantilever column with constant volume, subjected to a compressive end load. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-sections are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The differential equations governing the elastica of buckled column are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the horizontal deflection at free end and the buckling load, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing the elastica and the buckling loads of the columns are found to be efficient and reliable.
This paper presents the results of a series of tests carried out on cold-formed steel rectangular hollow and concrete infilled beam to column connections and frames. A stub column was chosen such that overall buckling does not influence the connection behaviour. The beam chosen was a short-span cantilever with a concentrated load applied at the free end. The beam was connected to the columns along the strong and weak axes of columns and these connections were tested to failure. Twelve experiments were conducted on cold-formed steel direct welded tubular beam to column connections and twelve experiments on connections with concrete infilled column subjected to monotonic loading. In all the experiments conducted, the stiffness of the connection, the ductility characteristics and the moment rotation behaviour were studied. The dominant mode of failure in hollow section connections was chord face yielding and not weld failure. Provision of concrete infill increases the stiffness and the ultimate moment carrying capacity substantially, irrespective of the axis of loading of the column. Weld failure and bearing failure due to transverse compression occurred in connections with concrete infilled columns. Six single-bay two storied frames both with and without concrete infill, and columns loaded along the major and minor axes were tested to failure. Concentrated load was applied at the midspan of first floor beam. The change in behaviour of the frame due to provision of infill in the column and in the entire frame was compared with hollow frames. Failure of the weld at the junction of the beam occurred for frames with infilled columns. Design expressions are suggested for the yielding of the column face in hollow sections and bearing failure in infilled columns which closely predicted the experimental failure loads.

In this paper, it is aimed to present a detail investigation related to structural behavior of laterally unrestrained steel cantilever roof of tribune with slender cross section. The structure is located in Tutak town in $A{\breve{g}}r{{\i}}$ and collapsed on October 25, 2015 at eastern part of Turkey is considered as a case study. This mild sloped roof structure was built from a variable I beam, and supported on steel columns of 5.5 m height covering totally $240m^2$ closed area in plan. The roof of tribune collapsed completely without any indication during first snowfall after construction at midnight a winter day, fortunately before the opening hours. The meteorological records and observations of local persons are combined together to estimate the intensity of snow load in the region and it is compared with the code specified values. Also, the wide/thickness and height/thickness ratios for flange and web are evaluated according to the design codes. Three dimensional finite element model of the existing steel tribune roof is generated considering project drawings and site investigations using commercially available software ANSYS. The displacements, principal stresses and strains along to the cantilever length and column height are given as contour diagrams and graph format. In addition to site investigation, the numerical and analytical works conducted in this study indicate that the unequivocal reasons of the collapse are overloading action of snow load intensity, some mistakes made in the design of steel cantilever beams, insufficient strength and rigidity of the main structural elements, and construction workmanship errors.

The vertical extension of a building in general remodeling process increases both gravity and seismic loads by simply adding masses to the building. In this study, a vertical extension structural module (VESM) is proposed for enhancing seismic performance of the existing buildings by utilizing the story-increased parts. The proposed VESM is composed of steel column, steel beam, and beam-end rotational damper. The steel columns are connected to the shear walls and transfer the wall rotation in out-of plane to the steel beam, and then the beam-end rotational damper dissipates the earthquake-induced energy. Numerical analysis result from a cantilever beam of which end-rotation is restricted by rotational damper indicates that the displacement, base shear, and base overturning moment of the existing structures showing cantilever behavior can be significantly reduced by using the proposed method. Also, it is observed that friction-type rotational damper is effective than viscous one.
On the stability of the Timoshenko cantilever column subjected of a compressive follower force, the influences of the moment of inertia of the tip mass at the free end and the characteristics of a translational spring at the free end of the column are studied. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of system are estabilished by using the d'Alembert virtual work of principle. On the evaluation of stability of the column, the effect of the shear deformation and rotatory inertia is considered in calculation. The moment of inertia of the tip mass at the free end of the column is changed by adjusting the distance c, from the free end of the column to the tip mass center. The free end of the column is supported elastically by a translational spring. For the maintenance of the good stability of the column, it is also proved that the constant of the translational spring at the free end must be very large for the case without a tip mass while it must be small for the case with a tip mass. Therefore, it is found that the shape of the tip mass and the characteristic of the spring at the free end are very effective elements for the stability of the column when the columns subjected to a compressive follower force are designed.

This paper presents the application of the technique of differential transformation to the post-buckling problem of non-uniform cantilever column subjected to a combined load. Numerical calculations are carried out and compared with previously published results to validate the results of the present method. The results obtained by this method agree very well with those reported in the previous works. The results obtained by the present method are presented for both various non-uniform columns and loads.
