  • The protective effects on hepatic fibrosis of an aqueous extract from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC (Campanulaceae), Changkil (CK), in hepatic stellate cell line, CFSC-2G. The increased deposition of extracellular matrix by hepatic stellate cells following liver injury in a process known as activation is considered a key mechanism for increased collagen content of liver during the development of liver fibrosis. • Codonopside lc is an active natural compound isolated from the roots of Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae), a Korean medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the in vitro effect of Codonopside 1c on the proliferation and induction of apoptosis in HL-60 human promyelocytic cells. When HL-60 cells were treated with Codonopside 1c, evidence of apoptotic features, including DNA fragmentation, formation of DNA ladder in agarose gel elecrophoresis and increse of annexin V binding, were obtained. • Herbal medicines are increasingly being utilized to treat a wide variety of disease processes. We previously reported that aqueous extract from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC (Campanulaceae), Changkil (CK). had hepatoprotective effects against acetaminophen induced liver injury. In the present study, we assayed the preventive and therapeutic effects of CK on experimental hepatic fibrosis induced by dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) in rats. (omitted)

  • The ameliorating effect of the saponin rich fraction (SRF) prepared from the roots extract of Platycodon grandiflorum (Campanulaceae) on the scopolamine-induced cognitive dysfunction in mice were investigated by way of Moris water maze task. The mice with repeated oral administration of the SRF for four weeks showed markedly reduced the swimming time and swimming distance to reach the platform as well as the increase of number of crossing the platform on the Moris water maze task performed after scopolamine intoxication. The results suggest that SRF obtained from the roots extract of P. grandiflorum exert a cognitive enhancing effect on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice.

  • Thirtyfour species of Korean medicinal plants which have been frequently used in oriental herb prescriptions were evaluated on their cytotoxicity and potential antitumor activities against AC glioma(9 ASK) in vitro. Dose of $100{\mu}g/ml$ of plant extracts appeared to exhibit slight cytotoxicity. Seven plant extracts, Aralia continentalis(Araliaceae), Lycium chinensis(Solanaceae), Epimedium koreanum(Berberidaceae), Platyodon grandiflorium(Campanulaceae), Pleuropterus multiflorus(Polygonaceae), Rheum undulatun(Polygonaceae) and Scutellaria baicalensis(Laminaceae), exhibited significant reversal$(51{\sim}90%)$ of astrocyte formation into original neuroglial cells' morphology through the prescreen tests.
