The effect of habitual alcohol consumption on the nutrient intake. body weight and serum values were studied in 194 upper middle class men aged 35-55yr. living in Seoul. Each subject was interviewed to get information of alcohol and nutrients intake. Blood samples were taken. Mean values for each variable were compared by fertile of alcohol intake. The average alcohol consumption of the subject was 32.2g/day. Most of times foods were taken along with drinks. The subjects preferred food items such as meat. fish, nuts. dry fishes when they drink. High alcohol consumers had a significantly higher intake of calorie. protein, fat. Fe, and riboflavin compared to nondrinkers and moderate drinkers. Body weight was significantly higher in high alcohol drinkers followed by moderate and nondrinker groups. They also showed the higher serum values of triglyceride and r-GTP. High alcohol consumption resulted in an increased intakes of most nutrients especially calorie and fat which leads to higher body weight and higher serum concentrations of triglyceride and r-GTP. Therefore it seems that heavy alcohol drinkers are more prone to obesity and related chronic diseases.
This research aims to find the information concerning nutritional status and food intake in Korean dirt betic men. Thus, the survey was made on 202 NIDDM patients over 35 age at University Hospital. The data were analysed using F-test and mutiple comparison in SAS package program. Main results were as follows : Incidence of diabetes is high in their forties and fifties. Most of them are salary men, administrators, and professionals in middle class, who reside in metropolitan area including Seoul. They used to take light exercise and were founded NIDDM by subjective symptoms. 36.6% of them have other diseases simultaneously such as hypertension, cancer, etc. Food intake pattern prior to incidence was that intake frequency of grains, sugars, protein foods, and liking foods was higher than of processed foods. Amounts of calorie intake were shown to be lower than normal persons, so that it seemed to be controlled by doctors. In addition, the calorie ratio derived from fat was lower than RDA. Thus protein and carbohydrate ratio was relatively higher than RDA. Total moan fatty acid intake was 32.15g and it is no significance among weight groups in various fatty acid intakes. With respect to the physical standards of the diabetic men, weight, PIBW BMI, BMM, 757, arm circumference, and waist /hip ratio were higher than in normal. Therefore it seemed that these factors would be related to the diabetics. From now on, it is required to research the correlations of fatty acid intakes on the diabetes and their influence to serum lipid profiles.
This study examines the effects of a low-calorie raw juice diet on the level of serum ferritin in adults and analyzes nutrient intake from the diet. There were significant differences between juices; the highest calorie was provided by pear juice, highest crude protein, vitamin A, and vitamin B2 levels were from green Juice 1; and highest vitamin C and vitamin B1 levels were from fruit juices. The ratio of estimated energy requirements (EER) for the participants was 56.2% from the raw juice diet. The percentages of recommended intake (RI) from the raw juice diet of protein (57.9%), dietary fiber (19.1%), niacin (6.2%), calcium (0.1%), and magnesium (0.2%) were lower than 75%. However, those of RI of vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and vitamin C were 1796.5%, 7481.7%, 1915.5%, 30858.7%, and 7500%, respectively, exceeding the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin A, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. There were significant decreases in weight, the body mass index (BMI), body fat mass, and skeletal muscle mass in males and females. After the diet program, serum iron and SOD (superoxide dismutase) showed significant decreases, whereas RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and serum ferritin showed significant increases. There were negative correlations between serum ferritin and weight and between serum ferritin and skeletal muscle mass for all participants. There were negative correlations between serum ferritin and skeletal muscle mass for males and between serum ferritin and body fat mass for females. These results suggest that a raw juice diet can supplement a regular diet to prevent excess or deficient nutrient intake.
This study was designed to compare the effect of protein with that of calorie, both of which were supplemented by separate feeding, on the recovery rate and metabolic change of undernourished rats. During the two weeks of food restriction, the weight of body and some major internal organs was reduced, compared with normal growing rats, but the extent of reduction was various. After that, recovery food was supplemented for two weeks. The amount of body nitrogen retention and its -percentage were lower in unsupplemented and sugar supplemented groups. Among the supplemented groups, its amount was increased according as the protein intake was higher, while its percentage was decreased. Body and internal organs weight change showed a similar tendency. Interrelation between calorie intake and body fat retention (liver fat content and epididymal fat pad weight) was not found regularly. Consequently, the recovery rate from restriction was higher in protein supplemented group than calorie supplemented group. But no significant difference could be found between the groups.
The diets of Gwangju and Yeosu city residents, nutrition survey was carried out both 1979 and 1980 year. 1. Average intake of nutritional elements for an adult per day was 654.88 gr. 2. Average Calorie distribution of the nutritional elements per adult per day was 17.85% for protein, 79.35% for carbohydrate, and 2.81% for Fat in Gwangju; 22.22% for protein, 73.88% for carbohydrate and 3.91% for Fat in Yeosu. 3. The ratio of the animal protein to total protein consumed was 75.09% in average. The amount of ingested protein, animal protein and plant protein were 130.05gr., 97.65gr. and 32.39gr. respectively. 4. In aspect of Calorie, take-in calorie was 2749.38 cal. which was lower than the RDA (3000 cal.). 5. In aspect of the minerals(Fe, Ca), the intake of Ca was 608.47mg. in Gwangju, but 491.89mg. in Yeosu. The intake of Fe in Gwangju and Yeosu were 13.21mg. and 10.22mg. respectively. The RDA for Fe, Ca were 600mg. and 10mg. respectively. 6. The amount of intaked thiamine and riboflavin were 1.48mg. and 1.01mg. respectively. The RDA of thiamine and riboflavin were 1.5mg. and 1.8mg. respectively.
This survey of 180 6th-grade students was focused owl the differences of nutritional and anthropometric status according to calorie Intakes. The results were summarized as followed : 1) All nutrient intakes of boys were higher than those of girls, and both groups had lower calcium and iron intakes compared with RDA. But all the nutrient Intakes were showed significantly different among three groups divided by percentile of calorie intake(lower 25%, 25∼75% and upper 25%), therefore it suggested that subjects had a large individual variance. 2) Mean height, weight, TSK, and blood pressure of boys were 145.5cm, 40.6kg, 19.3mm, and 114.5/68.4mmHg respectively, and girls were 148.4cm, 38.9kg, 16.7mm, 112.3/67.0mmHg. The differences in anthropometric status according calorie and calcium intake were not found. This study showed protein intake had influence on height and weight of boys.
The purpose of this survey was to study Nutrition Status related to eating behabvior health status and nutrient intake. this survey was conducted for 100 students at Mokpo National University from semptember 25 to 29 in 1989. Average height and weight of students were found to be increased for last thirty years from 1957 to 1989. the average height of male and female were 172.0cm 160.1cm and the average weight of those were 63.4kg 48.2kg respectively. Health status showed fair. but most of students had symptoms such as stress cold and disorder of stomach. The main purpose of eating is to satisfy hungry and routinal work. Most students have had dietary problems such as irregularity of meal time and skipping meal. Most nutrients was intaken properly but some were under percentae of RDA. For the male the average intake of Calorie(84.5%) and Vitamin B2(93.3%) were lower than RDA for the frmale that of Calorie(81.7%) and Iron(80.6%) The ration of percent calorie of Carbohyd-rate : Protein : Fat from total calories in male was 65:15:20 and that of female was 64 : 15: 21 this result was properly approached to the Recommend Calorie Composition(Based on Recommended Allwances 5th ed. Korea FAO Assoc. 1989)
This research was to examine the correlation between body composition and life style including nutrients intake and physical activities of male and female athletes and nonathletes who are attending college. The percent of body fat with a skinfold caliper was measured higher in female than male. The body fat of the female students in the nonathletic group was the highest and male students in the nonathletic group showed the lowest in body fat. On the correlation between skinfold thickness and body composition the skinfold thick-ness showed negative correlation with the body density. However it showed positive correla-tion with the percent of body fat. According to this result it can be defined that skinfold thickness is in proportion to the body fat. dietary intakes of male and female athletes exceeded the need for their excessive physical activity. Concerning the correlation between calorie intake and body fat was high. From this we conclude that the more one consumes calorie intake the higher one's body fat content will be. On the correlation of physical activity and body composition the lean body mass showed high positive correlation with physical activity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The standard pattern of Brazilian food consumption is based on the combination of rice and beans served together in the main meals. This study assessed the effects of Brazilian-staple calorie-restricted (BS-diet) dietary advice, with brown rice and beans, on metabolic parameters, body composition, and food intake in overweight/obese subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twentyseven subjects were randomly assigned to a conventional-type calorie-restricted diet (CT-diet) (n = 13) or a BS-diet (n = 14). Glucose metabolism, lipid profile, anthropometric and body composition parameters, and food intake were measured before and after 16 weeks. Paired t-tests/Wilcoxon tests were used for comparison of differences from baseline and unpaired t-tests/Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparison of differences between the groups. RESULTS: After16 weeks, both groups showed reductions in weight and waist circumference (P < 0.02), and the BS-diet group showed a decrease in body fat (P = 0.0001), and significant improvement in glucose metabolism (fasting plasma glucose, glucose and insulin areas under the curve, Cederholm index, and HOMA2-$%{\beta}$) ($P{\leq}0.04$) and lipid profile (cholesterol, triacylglycerol, LDL-c, VLDL-c, and cholesterol/HDL-c ratio) ($P{\leq}0.05$). In addition, the BS-diet group showed significant improvement in HOMA2-$%{\beta}$, compared to the CT-diet group (P = 0.03). The BS-diet group also showed a significant reduction in energy, lipids, carbohydrate, and cholesterol intake ($P{\leq}0.04$) and an increase in fiber intake ($P{\leq}0.001$), while the CT-diet group showed a significant reduction in intake of energy, macronutrients, PUFA, and cholesterol ($P{\leq}0.002$). CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the benefits of the BS-diet on metabolic parameters in obese subjects.
