This experiment was carried out to develop the model system for mass production of biomedical and nutritional proteins (human proteins) through mamraary gland of the transgenic cattle produced by gene manipulation and embryological technologies. Human growth hormone gene fused with rat $\beta$-casein gene promoter was microinjected into pronuclei of one cell bovine embryos produced by in vitro fertilization. After microinjection, embryos were cultured in vitro for 6 or 7 days. Twenty embryos reaching to blastocysts were transferred to 10 beef recipients, each receiving two embryos. Recipients were diagnosed for pregnancy by rectal palpation at 76 days after embryo transfer. One of them was pregnant to term and produced a female calf weighing 21 kg at 280 days following embryo transfer. DNA was extracted from umbilical cord tissue and blood of calf born for confirming gene insertion. As determined by Southern hybridization, the transgene was not found.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of calf muscle massage on the balance of low extremities and flexibility of both ankles. Methods. The subjects were 16 healthy adults(men 8, women 8). The group was applied effleurage, tapotement, pressure forms of massage on their calf muscles. The intervention was offered during 3 minutes per one leg, to a total of 6 minutes. We assessed their balance and flexibility of both ankles using Functional reaching test(FRT) and One leg standing test(OLST) with trampoline before and after applying massage. Results. In this study, the data shows the ability of FRT and the ability of OLST with trampoline is improved in massage group. Conclusions. These results suggest that massages help to improve the balance of low extremities and the flexibility of both ankles.

The purpose of this study was to examine theory about indoor thermal comfort-environment as well as to determine thermal sensation and physical responses for men in summer and winter indoor environment, under various air temperature and relative humidity, with male university students. Subjective Evaluation, Heart rate(Electrocardiogram, ECG), Electroencephalo gram(EEG) were examined. We found that comfort of people was achieved at SET*. 24.7$^{\circ}C$, -0.82${\alpha}$-wave) both in summer and in winter.

We experienced a series of animal experimental studies of the total artificial heart in 1988. So called, "Korean Heart* was used in this study, which is developed and fabricated in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Med., S.N.U.. "Korean Heart" is a Rolling-Cylinder Motor-Driven type which is a newly developed electromechanical heart over the shortcomes of the previous artificial hearts, especially pneumatic type. The advantages of the "Korean Heart" are total implantability, quiet and smooth movement, small size fittable in oriental people, etc. The animal experiments were performed two times, as an assist device in sheep and total artificial heart implant experiment in calf weighing 100 kg. After total implantation, the artificial heart was well functioned in movement and hemodynamic control. So that, the calf was recovered excellently, which was able to stand up by herself and take an oral intake. Total survival time was 100 hours and the cause of death was a sudden pumping failure [electrical connection problem]. Several postoperative laboratory results almost within normal limits and no hemolysis, but in autopsy, the multiple thromboembolic findings were seen at the lung and kidney.n at the lung and kidney.

A 10-day old male calf exhibited multiple congenital anomalies of the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, including renal fusion (horseshoe kidney), ureteral fusion, rectovesicular fistula, and atresia ani. The single kidney was fused at the caudal poles. The left kidney and cranial half of right kidney were shrunken, while the remaining lobules were hypertrophic. Ureters were fused cranially and bifurcated caudally. The terminal rectum was narrowed and connected with the bladder. The anus was imperforate. The cause of these anomalies could not be determined. This is the first report of this constellation of congenital anomalies in a calf.

A female Korean native calf with diprosopus was examined macroscopically and radiographically. Anterior head duplication (diprosopus) was observed and all structures caudal to it were normal. She had two complete mouths, four eyes and three ears. Single tongue was present in each oral cavity. The two tongues were joined at their base just posterior to the single epiglottis. Both oral cavities led jointly into a common pharynx and one esophagus. One laryngeal cavity communicated with one common trachea. The lower jaws were immobile because of overlapping mandibular rami. The atlas was complete, and two anterior articular cavities articulated with the lateral condyles of the occipital bones of each skull. The cerebrums were fused each other at their caudal portion, and the giri and sulci were underdeveloped. The cerebellums were also completely fused, and they had not characteristic appearance of the vermis. The spinal cord showed normal appearance.

Congenital anomalies occur at low levels in Korean antive cattle. PCR and Serum neutrlizing test against BVD, Akabane virus, Ibaraki virus, Kasba virus were examined. The results were all negative. Gross anatomical analysis was carried aout. Congenital abnormal newborn calf had 2 atropic left hindlimbs, which was nor moved autonomosly. The length of 2 atropic hindlimbs was 72 em and 48cm respectively. Both of them were curved severely at joints. Affected limbs were developed in connective tissue but lack of muscular tissue. In the abdominal region right kidney was normal. But there were two left kidneys which was half size compared with normal kidney. One of them had polycysts. In skeletal region, affected left limb is defective of head of femur and tibia.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the stretching of the calf muscles on foot pressure and contact area in young adult. Participants stood on a wedge board that was sloped between 15~25 degree for 15min. After stretching participants stood quietly on force plate, result was recorded. Participants stood on a force plate for 1 min in eye closed condition, and them the foot pressure and area was recorded. The following variables were calculated off-line: anterior and posterior foot pressure and contact area, medial and lateral foot pressure and contact area. Results showed that anterior pressure change due to stretch, but mediolateral was not significant. This result suggested that stretching of the calf muscle has the effect of increasing anterior pressure by flexibility change on calf muscle, so this effects might be effective intervention for reduce of serious problem to neurologic patients in therapy session.

We have introduced the nonresonant holes in the satellite hole spectrum to examine the interaction of two tautomers of thionin to various polynucleotides, including [d(GC)7]2 , [d(AT)7]2 and calf thymus. The saturated depths of nonresonant holes are much reduced upon interacting with [d(GC)7]2 and calf thymus than with [d(AT)7]2 , implying that the binding affinity of thionin to [d(GC)7]2 and calf thymus is stronger than [d(AT)7]2 . In addition, the less perturbation on the exocyclic amino group of the amino -form of thionin upon interacting with [d(AT)7]2 suggests that a direct hydrogen bond formed between the amino group of thionin and the phosphate of nucleic acids is unlikely.

For the prevention of Hanwoo calf diarrhea, the floor in a cattle shed was flamed using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in an attempt to substitute for the chemical disinfection method. Before flaming, litter on the floor was removed and cleaned. Outbreak rate of diarrhea in calves vaccinated with ScourGuard 3K^® was decreased from 70% to 30% and the effect of the flame disinfection lasted for three to four months.
