Effect of Feeding Direct-fed Microbial as an Alternative to Antibiotics for the Prophylaxis of Calf Diarrhea in Holstein Calves

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding direct-fed microbials (DFM) on the growth performance and prophylaxis of calf diarrhea during the pre-weaning period as an alternative to antibiotics. A multi-species DFM was formulated including three lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus salivarius Ls29, Pediococcus acidilactia Pa175, and L. plantarum Lp177), three Bacillus strains (B. subtilis T4, B. polymyxa T1 and SM2), one yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, and a nonpathogenic E. coli Nissle 1917. Lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus strains were selected based on the antibacterial activity against various animal pathogens, especially pathogenic E. coli using agar diffusion methods in vitro. Test and control groups were fed milk replacer and calf starter supplemented with DFM ($10^9$ cfu each of eight species/d/head, n = 29) or with antibiotics (0.1% neomycin sulfate in milk replacer and Colistin 0.08% and Oxyneo 110/110 0.1% in calf starter, n = 15), respectively. Overall fecal score and the incidence rate of diarrhea were reduced in the DFM group compared to the antibiotics one. About 40% of calves in antibiotic group suffered from diarrhea while in DFM group only 14% showed diarrhea. There was no difference in the average daily gain and feed efficiency of two groups. The hematological levels of calves were all within the normal range with no significant difference. In conclusion, the feeding of multispecies DFM during the pre-weaning period could reduce calf diarrhea and there was no difference in the growth performance between the groups, thus showing the potential as an alternative to antibiotics.

한우송아지의 전지골절에서 아크릴릭 프레임을 이용한 외부고정 (External Fixation with Acrylic Frame in Forelimb Fracture of Korean Native Two Calves)

  • Two day-old male and 1 month-old female Hanwoo calves presented to Chonbuk Animal Medical Center in Chonbuk National University. Two calves were stepped by mother cow and had right (2 day-old male) and left (1 month-old female) forelimb lameness. The male calf was diagnosed as right radius-ulnar fracture through physical and radiographic examination. The other female calf was diagnosed as left third and fourth metacarpal bone fracture by the same examinations as male calf. Acrylic frame external fixator was used to reduce the fractures. Arcrylic frame external fixator in two calves lasted for 5~6 weeks. After removing the acrylic frame external fixator, radiographic evaluation and physical examination were performed. Fractured radius-ulnar and metacarpal bones were unionized and the calves were able to stand and bear weight. In these two calves, application of acrylic frame external fixator in calf fracture was effective. Acrylic frame external fixator should be considered for the repair of radius-ulnar and metacarpal bone fracture in calf.

운동화, 구두착용에 따른 책가방 부하가 성인 여성의 척추세움근과 장딴지근의 근육 활성도에 미치는 영향 (The Effects on Erector Spine Muscles and Calf Muscle Activity according to Book Bag Handling Styles and Footwear)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of book bag handling styles and types of footwear on muscle activation of erector spine muscles and calf muscles. Methods : Ten participants took off their book bags and used sneakers to walk on a treadmill for 30 minutes. The following day, 10 participants put on their backpack with 10% of the weight and used sneakers to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes. On the last day, 10 participants put on their backpack with 10% of the weight and used formal shoes to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes. After walking on the treadmill at 3 mph for thirty minutes, we measured muscle activation in erector spine muscles and calf muscles. Results : The results of this study showed the activation of the erector spine muscles and the calf muscles significantly increased when walking with a book bag and the activation of the erector spine muscles and the calf muscles significantly increased when walking in formal shoes. Conclusion : Using a backpack and formal shoes increase muscle activity of erector spine muscles and calf muscles. The results of this study indicate that not using a backpack and wearing sneakers are more beneficial than that using a backpack weighted 10% and wearing formal shoes and can be recommended to adult women by clinicians.

제주흑우 송아지에서 소 합포체성 폐렴의 발생 (Bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection in a Jeju native black calf)

  • A 2-month-old male Jeju native black calf with respiratory distress was died and requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Jeju National University for diagnosis. Grossly, lungs were focally attached to the pleura and heart with fibrin. Purple red sublobar consolidations were distributed in both apical and cardiac lobes of lungs. Histopathologically, diffuse severe bronchointerstitial pneumonia characterized by multifocal necrotizing bronchiolitis, formation of numerous multinucleated syncytial cells in bronchiolar and alveolar lumens, and diffuse alveolar wall thickening were observed in lungs. Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions were observed in bronchiolar epithelial cells and syncytial cells. According to reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) was detected in the lung of calf. Based on the histopathologic findings and RT-PCR, this calf was diagnosed as BRSV infection. In our best knowledge, this is the first case of BRSV infection in Jeju native black calf.

대동물 보정 차량을 이용한 횡와위 자세 육성우의 음경전위술 (Penile Translocation Surgery in Lateral Recumbency of a Calf Using Tilt-Up Mobile)

  • This report evaluated the convenience and accessibility of a penile translocation surgery in the lateral recumbency of a calf using a tilt-up mobile compared with that of dorsal recumbency on the ground of a barn. One nine-month-old F-1 (Korean native sire x Holstein dam) calf was sedated with xylazine (0.03 mg/kg, IV) and restrained in the right lateral recumbency position on a tilt-up restraint mobile (90 cm high), whereas the other nine-month-old Korean native calf was administered xylazine (0.3 mg/kg, IV) and restrained in dorsal recumbency position on the ground of a barn, with assistance by one person. For the two calves, lidocaine was administered subcutaneously from the preputial orifice to the S-shaped penis. The preputial orifice was incised, and the preputial sheath and penis were separated bluntly, then laterally translocated to the site toward the left flank at a $40^{\circ}$ angle. Anti-inflammatory drug (ketoprofen) and antibiotics (penicillin) were administered following the surgery. The duration of surgery was 30 min shorter in the calf that received the surgery in lateral recumbency using the tilt-up mobile with operator's standing posture (60 min) than the one that underwent surgery in dorsal recumbency on the ground with operator's bending posture (90 min). One week after the surgery, the operation area, including the translocated preputial orifice, was healed without complications in both cases. The results detailed in this report demonstrate that penile translocation surgery in the lateral recumbency position using a tilt-up mobile might be used conveniently in calves due to the convenience of restraint, reduced surgery time, and reduced physical inconvenience for the surgeon.

생후 5개월된 형질전환 암송아지에서의 인공 비유 (Artificial Induction of Lactation in 5 Month Old Transgenic Female Calf)

  • The purpose of this study was premature induction of lactation in the transgenic calf to confirm the expression of human lactoferrin gene in the milk as early as possible. We performed the induction of lactation in 6 normal 1-month old calves and 3 normal and 1 transgenic 5-month old calves. In order to induction of lactation, 1-month old calf was injected with estradiol benzoate (0.2 mg/kg), $17-{\beta}$ estradiol cypionate (0.1 mg/kg) and progesterone (0.25-0.5 mg/kg) in every other day by 21 days. After 10 days cessation of administration, dexamethasone (0.028 mg/kg) was injected intramuscularly, however, lactation was failed. In the 5-month old calves, estradiol benzoate (0.2 mg/kg) and progesterone (0.5 mg/kg) were injected individually every other day during 21 days. After 10 days cessation of administration, dexamethasone (0.1 mg/kg) was injected intramuscularly and milk was lactated in the next day. Lactation was successfully induced in the 5-month old normal and transgenic calves and we confirmed the lactoferrin gene in the milk of transgenic calf. In conclusion, confirmation of human lactoferrin gene expressed in the milk of the transgenic calf was possible in 20 months earlier than in normal condition.

인간의 건강한 삶을 위한 가축원격 진료 예측 모델 (Livestock Telemedicine System Prediction Model for Human Healthy Life)

  • 건강한 삶은 인간이 추구하는 행복의 필수불가결한 요소이다. 식생활은 그 기반을 제공하는 것이며 가축의 건강은 사람의 건강에 직접적인 영향을 준다. 가축 질병을 정확하게 예측하고 관리하는 것은 지속가능한 가축의 생산을 보장하고 인간의 건강을 유지하는 데 기여한다. 사람의 경우 만병의 근원이 감기라면, 송아지의 경우 모든 질병의 원인을 제공하는 것은 설사병이다. 따라서 송아지의 설사병을 스마트 센서로 생체 데이터를 추출하고, 수집된 생체 데이터는 전처리 후에 의미 있는 정보로 사용한다. 축사의 환경 정보와 송아지 객체의 생화학·면역·감염원인체의 측정 정보를 온톨로지로 구축한다. 온톨로지는 논리적 추론 절차를 거쳐 송아지의 설사병을 예측할 수 있는 지식 베이스로 구축하였다. 송아지의 질병명, 원인, 발생 시기, 증상에 대해서 지식 기반으로 설사병을 예측한다. 가축의 일부 중에서 송아지를 모델한 지식 기반의 가축 원격 진료 질병 예측은 상위 온톨로지와 예측에 관한 도메인 온톨로지로 표현하여 그 결과로 치료, 예방법을 제시할 수 있다.

설문을 통한 한우 송아지 이유월령이 거세한우 출하체중 및 송아지 폐사에 미치는 영향 조사 연구 (A Survey on Effects of Weaning Age on Market Weights of Steers and Calf Mortality in Hanwoo)

  • 본 연구는 설문조사를 통하여 한우 송아지의 이유월령이 거세한우의 출하체중 및 송아지 폐사에 미치는 영향을 조사하고자 수행되었다. 설문은 방문을 통하여 진행되었고, 조사된 총 농가수는 862농가로서, 가임암소사육규모별 조사 농가수는 10~19두 188호, 20~49 364호, 50~99두 227호, 100두 이상 83호로 나타났다. 이유시기는 3개월령 농가의 비율이 40.4%로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 각 사육규모별로도 3개월령이 가장 높은 비율을 차지하였다. 이유월령 3개월을 초과하는 각 사육규모별 농가의 비율은 10~19두 규모가 53.5%로서 가장 높게 나타났으며, 20~49두 규모 37.5%, 50~59두 규모 43.7%, 100두 이상 규모는 39.0%로 조사되었다. 조사 농가의 사육규모는 거세한우 출하개월령, 출하시 생체중 및 도체중에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 그러나 이유월령의 증가와 도체중은 유의적으로 음(-)의 상관관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 도체중은 이유월령이 짧을수록 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 조사 농가의 평균 한우 송아지 폐사율은 5.6%로 나타났으며, 사육규모는 한우 송아지의 폐사율에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 반면에 이유월령과 한우 송아지 폐사율 및 폐사 원인인 설사 비율은 유의적으로 양(+)의 상관관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 한우 송아지 폐사율은 이유월령이 짧을수록 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 설문조사의 결과, 이유시기의 단축은 거세한우의 도체중 증가와 송아지 폐사율 감소의 효과로 한우 번식우 농가의 수익성을 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

Enzyme의 처리에 의한 Cheese Base의 숙성중 Casein의 변화 (The Changes of Casein of Cheese Base Treated with Enzyme during Ripening)

  • 본 연구는 UF에 의한 cheese base제조과정 중 calf rennet 과 대용효소인 porcine pepsin을 각각 단독, 또는 1:1로 혼합첨가하여 cheese base를 제조한 후, HPLC와 전기영동을 이 용하여 casein의 변화를 관찰하기 위여 실시하였으며 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. HPLC를 이용, Superose 12 column에 의하여cheese casein을 gel filtration한 결과, Cheddar cheese는 제조직후 5개의 분획이었던 것이 6개월 숙성후 8개의 분획으로 분별되었으며, 효소처리하지 않은 대조구 cheese base는 8주 숙성중 4개의 분획으로 분별되어 분획수의 큰 변동은 없었고, calf rennet 단독처리구는 4개에서 5개로, 1:1혼합효소처리구(calf rennet : porcine pepsin)는 4개에서 7개로, porcine pepsin 단독처리구는 4개에서 8개로 각각 분별되어 porcine pepsin이 혼합됨에 따라 casein의 분해 정도가 높았다. 효소처리하여 8주간 숙성시킨 cheese base의 casein을 전기영동한 결과, ${\alpha}$$_{s1}$-casein의 경우, calf rennet 단독처리구는 3개의 band로 분리되었고, 1:1혼합효소처리구(calf rennet :porcine pepsin)와 Porcine pepsin 단독처리구는 5개의 band로 분리되었으며, 대조구는 1개의 major band와 2개의 minor band를 나타내었다. ${\beta}$-casein은 porcine pepsin의 첨가비율이 증가할수록 그 농도는 감소하였고, ${\gamma}_1$ ${\gamma}_2$-casein으로 추정되는 band는 상대적으로 증가함을 나타내었다. 또한 para-${\kappa}$-casein은 대조구를 제외하고 calf rennet, porcine pepsin단독처리구, 1:1혼합효소처리구에서 분리되었다.
