The chemical forms of calcium compounds in perilla leaves and their changes after harvest were investigated. The four types of calcium compounds extracted were as follows: water soluble calcium(F-I: mainly water soluble organic acid salts and calcium ion), IN-sodium chloride soluble calcium(F-II: calcium-pectate and calcium-carbonate), 2%-acetic acid soluble calcium(F-III: calcium-phosphate), and 5%-hydrochloric acid soluble calcium(F-IV: calcium-oxalate). The calcium content of perilla leaves was not found to vary with their age. Relatively high levels of F-l (28.4~39.5) and F-II (34.4~47.4) were found in young and mature leaves while the F-IV constituted 15.6~21.6% of the total calcium. The F-IV calcium contents of perilla. spinach and jaso were 16.8, 42.4 and 22.3%, respectively. In contrast to calcium. magnesium existed as water soluble magnesium at the highest content of 90.6% in spinach while 62.9% and 16.8% of the total magnesium existed as water soluble magnesium in perilla and jaso, repectively. The change in vitamin C and F-IV calcium content were examined for 7 days after harvest. Vitamin C content decreased slowly at the beginning but rapidly from the 4th day after harvest. On the other hand, the F-IV calcium content increased slowly at the beginning and rapidly from the 4th day of observation. This result suggests that the increase in F-IV calcium is related to the decrease in vitamin C content. This phenomena was more distinctly observed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ than 5$^{\circ}C$.

In this study, we tried to precipitate calcium carbonate with carbonate ions decomposed from urea by plant extract and calcium ions dissolved in water. The clay particles carry a net negative charge on their surfaces. Such clay mineral was additionally mixed as a medium to improve soil strength and durability with environmentally-friendly way. The $1^{st}$ solution (plant extracts and urea) and the $2^{nd}$ solution (calcium chloride and clay) were mixed together with clean Nakdong River sand. Then, this mixed soil was compacted into a small cylindrical specimen and then air cured for 7 days in laboratory. The molar concentration of urea and calcium chloride was tested for three different conditions, 1, 5, and 7 mol. Three different clay contents (0, 1, and 3% per total weight) were mixed with sand. For each specimen, a series of unconfined compression test, a durability test, SEM, EDX and XRD analyses were carried out to evaluate its cementation and structure. As the molar concentration of the solution and clay content increased, the unconfined compressive strength and durability increased. The results of SEM, EDX and XRD analyses showed that calcite was precipitated around clay mineral. The thermogravimetry analysis indicated that calcium carbonate precipitated about 1~2% per total weight of the sample.
For the bottle cultivation of pleurotus nebrodensis, poplar tree sawdust was a better substrate than corncobs in terms of primordia and growth characteristics. The nutrition rich substrate was cottonseed dregs, cottonseed coat, bran, corn powder, and rice bran. The mixing ratio was adjusted such that the nitrogen content was ${\leq}58%$; cotton seed dregs, at the level of 20%, were particularly necessary to adjust the nitrogen content for the substrates that had high total nitrogen content. Additionally, inclusion of calcium carbonate in the substrate was better for primordia and growth characteristics than inclusion of calcium hydroxide. In the absence of calcium carbonate, the elasticity of pileus and stipe decreased and their hardness increased. Therefore, the optimum substrate composition for the cultivation of Pleurotus nebrodensis was 40:20:20:15:3:2 mixing ratio of poplar tree sawdust, cottonseed dregs, cottonseed coat, bran, corn powder, and calcium carbonate.

Shell waste from the butter clam Saxidomus purpuratus and littleneck clam Ruditapes philippinarum is a large by-product of shellfish aquaculture, and it is desirable to convert it into value-added products for industrial applications. In this study, calcium carbonate (CaC) polymorphs from butter clam (BCSP) and littleneck clam (LCSP) shell powders and commercial CaC were characterized using Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that the optimal calcination conditions to eliminate organic substances and improve solubility for both BCSP and LCSP were $800^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in an electrical furnace. Calcination improved the white index of the butter clam (BCCP) and littleneck clam (LCCP) calcined powder compared with shell powders. The calcium content in BCCP (51.1%) was higher than that of LCCP (44.9%) or commercial calcium oxide (CaO, 44.7%). The XRD patterns of BCCP and LCCP were similar to that of CaO. Cubic-like crystals of CaC and irregular crystals of BCCP and LCCP were observed by SEM. The FT-IR and XRD analyses revealed the presence of calcite and aragonite in the BCSP and aragonite in the LCSP, whereas the CaC contained calcite. These results indicate that butter and littleneck clam shells are potential biomass resources for calcium carbonate and calcium oxide.
In this work, we aim to investigate the specific gravity, thermal, and mechanical property changes of solid-state extruded polypropylene (PP)/calcium carbonate composites before and after orientation. For this work, we prepared $PP/CaCO_3$ composites having two different sizes (OM-1 and OM-10). On increasing the filler content, the specific gravity of the composites increases. The specific gravity of the oriented specimen containing filler in PP matrix is found to be much smaller than that of pre-specimen due to the formation of more microvoids. The presence of microvoids in case of oriented composite specimen significantly affected the tensile and flexural properties of the composites. It was observed that the effect of orientation on both flexural strength and modulus is much stronger than the effect of filler contents, regardless of the filler particle size.

Mineral carbonation is a technology for permanently storing carbon dioxide by reacting with metal oxides containing calcium and magnesium. In this study, we used sea water and alkaline industrial by-product such as paper sludge ash (PSA) for the storage of carbon dioxide through direct carbonation. We found the optimum conditions of both sea water content (mixing ratio of sea water and PSA) and reaction time required in the direct carbonation through various experiments using sea water and PSA. In addition, we compared the amounts of carbon dioxide storage with the cases when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA. The amount of carbon dioxide storage was calculated by using both solid weight increase through the carbonation reaction and the contents of carbonate salts from thermal gravimetric analysis. PSA particle used in this study contained 67.2% of calcium. The optimum sea water content and reaction time in the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA were 5 mL/g and 2 hours, respectively, under the conditions of 0.05 L/min flow rate of carbon dioxide injected at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The amounts of carbon dioxide stored when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA were 113 and $101kg\;CO_2/(ton\;PSA)$, respectively. The solid obtained through the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA was composed of mainly calcium carbonate in the form of calcite and a small amount of magnesium carbonate. The solid obtained by using ultra-pure water, also, was found to be carbonate salt in the form of calcite.

Clamshells, which comprise more than 50% of a clam’s weight, are a major byproduct of the clam industry and are mainly composed of insoluble calcium carbonate. This study investigates the use of clamshells as a natural calcium resource. Highly soluble powdered calcium lactate (LCCL) was prepared from the calcined powdered shells of littleneck clams (LCCP) using response surface methodology (RSM) to predict optimum conditions. These conditions, as derived from pH, solubility, and yield of 11 LCCLs manufactured according to the RSM model, were 1.80 M lactic acid and 1.13 M LCCP. The actual values of pH (6.98), solubility (93.99%), and yield (351.23%) under the optimized conditions were as predicted. The derived LCCL exhibited a strong buffering capacity in the range of pH 2.78-3.90 when combined with less than 2 mL of 1 N HCl. The ranges of calcium content and solubility of LCCL were 7.7-17.5 g/100 g and 96.6-98.9%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) of the LCCL identified it as calcium lactate pentahydrate, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed an irregular and rod-like microstructure. These results confirm the potential use of clamshells, converted to highly soluble organic acid calcium, as an additive to enhance calcium content in food ingredients.
For enhancement of apple productivity, the calcium fertilizers to increase the calcium content of fruit, and reduce the incidence of bitter pit in apples are applied. Crushed oyster shell contains a plenty of calcium carbonate, and a very small amount of boron, ferrous, and manganese. A field study was conducted to determine the optimum level of crushed oyster shell for soil nutrient management, and its effect on the induction of bitter pit in cultivar 'Gamhong' apple. The application of crushed oyster shell increased organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation concentration in soil. We found a significant positive correlation between soil pH, and application level of crushed oyster shell in both top, and subsoils. The incidence of bitter pit in apple fruit at the harvest stage was significantly higher in non treatment and calciummagnesium carbonate treatment than on over applications 4 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for crushed oyster shell. However, the optimum level of crushed oyster shell was 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$, especially considering the soil Ca content, soil pH, fruits weight, and yield. Our results show that the crushed oyster shell can be effective in restoring the soil nutrient balance, and inducing the bitter pit in apple fruit.

In this study, we investigated the applicability of PCC(precipitated calcium carbonate) as a raw material for the manufacture of duplex-board. Papers were made with white-ledger stock collected from the actual duplex-board mill and PCC in a laboratory, and paper properties including bulk, ash content, tensile strength, burst strength, brightness and opacity were measured. The effect of PCC on the drying energy of duplex-board was also determined by measuring the moisture content of wet web and calculating drying energy reduction. PCC increased bulk and ISO brightness significantly, which means PCC can decrease the use of virgin pulp and recycled fibers. PCC decreased the moisture content of wet web, which means PCC can decrease drying energy consumption. However, paper strength decreased as addition levels of PCC addition increased. Therefore, the addition level of PCC must be determined considering the reduction of paper strengths.
To elucidate the effects of calcium carbonate applied under upland and flooded conditions on the changes of soil pH, an incubation study of a soil was carried out. The experiment was conducted under the conditions with and without ground rice straw application. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The incubation under the upland moisture condition after the application of calcium carbonate raised soil pH as high as calcium hydroxide did, whereas incubation with calos treatment under the flooded condition showed a low pH. 2. Reduction of a soil brought about by the application of ground rice straw has a significant effect on the rise of soil pH. The high pH of a soil thus brought about or raised by the use of lime is gradually reduced as the accumulation of bicarbonate ions and carbon dioxide increases in the soil solution. It may, however, be possible to keep the high pH of a flooded soil by practicing intermittent drainage or cultivation which reduces the content of bicarbonate and $CO_2$ pressure in soil solution. 3. Carbonate and bicarbonate salts which may be produced in flooded and reduced soil increases the buffering capacity of the soil.
