  • The high tensile strength of steel cable enabled the development of long span cable bridges which that a better tensile element can break the limitation of current bridge design. A carbon fiber has at least strength as steel cable and is very light material relatively. Due to its characteristics. commercial carbon fiber cables are already used in place of steel prestress tendons. This study proposes a parallel carbon fiber(CF) cable for cable based on NPWS and CFCC cables. Static and nonlinear analyses reveal that the CF cable develops much less stress than the NPWS cable cyclic loads.

  • The Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge comprising two main spans and two side spans. The bridge deck is supported by three towers, an end pier and an abutment. Each of the three towers consists of a single reinforced concrete mast which reduces its section in steps, and it is strengthened by transverse cables and struts in the transverse vertical plane. The bridge deck is supported by four inclined planes of cables emanating from anchorages at the tower tops. In view of the threat from typhoons, the dynamic behaviour of long-span cable-supported bridges in the region is always an important consideration in their design. This paper is devoted to the ambient vibration measurements of the bridge for evaluation of dynamic characteristics including the natural frequencies and mode shapes. It also describes the modelling of the bridge. A few finite element models are developed and calibrated to match with the field data and the results of subsequent structural health monitoring of the bridge.

  • Extradosed PSC Box bridges, newly emerging type of structures in construction market, have a characteristic in that external tendons are used for strengthening PSC Box girder like stay cables in cable stayed bridges. In this study, a series of constructions stage analysis procedure, including initial shape analysis, backward analysis and forward analysis, have been performed in order to investigate long-term behavior of extradosed PSC box bridges, using PCCAP-a computer program for time-dependent stage analysis of PSC cable stayed bridges. CEB-FIP 1978 model was used for the consideration of time-dependent effect of concrete material. Showing the validity of the analysis results with RM SPACE FRAME, it has been confirmd that time-dependent effects become less consequential as the stiffness of girder becomes larger.

  • Experimental studies and finite element analyses have been carried out to establish the effect of tendon damage on the structural behavior of concrete filled tubular tied arch girder (CFTA girder). The damage of tendon is considered in different stages by varying the number of damaged cables in the tendon. Static and dynamic structural parameters are observed at each stage. The results obtained from the experiments and numerical studies have been compared to validate the studies. The tendons whose damage can significantly affect the stiffness of the CFTA girder are identified by performing the sensitivity analysis. The locations in the girder which are sensitive to the tendon damage are also identified.

  • The numerical simulation methodologies to evaluate the structural behaviors of prestressed concrete containment vessels (PCCVs) have been substantially developed in recent decades. However, there remain several issues to be investigated more closely to narrow the gap between test results and numerical simulations. As one of those issues, the effects of no stiffness inside unbonded tendon ducts on the behavior of PCCVs are investigated in this study. Duct holes for prestressing cables' passing are provided inside the containment wall and dome in one to three directions for general PCCVs. The specific stress distribution along the periphery of the prestressing duct hole and the loss of stiffness inside the hole, especially in an unbonded tendon system, are usually neglected in the analysis of PCCVs with the assumption that the duct hole is filled with concrete. However, duct holes are not small enough to be neglected. In this study, the effects of no stiffness inside the unbonded tendon system on the behaviors of PCCVs are evaluated using both analytical and numerical approaches. From the results, the effects of no stiffness in unbonded tendons need to be considered in numerical simulations for PCCVs, especially under internal pressure loading.
