To enhance cable stiffness, this paper proposed a combined application of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) and steel materials, resulting in a novel type of hybrid stay cable system especially for the cable-stayed bridges with main span lengths of 1400~2800 m. In this combination, CFRP materials can conserve all their advantages such as light weight and high strength; while steel materials help increase the equivalent stiffness to compensate for the low elastic modulus of CFRP materials. An increase of the equivalent stiffness of the hybrid stay cable system could be further obtained with a reasonable increase of its safety factor. Following this concept, a series of parametric studies for the hybrid stay cable system with the consideration of stiffness and cost were carried out. Three design strategies/criteria, namely, best equivalent stiffness with a given safety factor, highest ratio of equivalent stiffness to material cost with a given safety factor, and best equivalent stiffness under a given cost were proposed from the stiffness and cost viewpoints. Finally, a comprehensive design procedure following the proposed design strategies was suggested. It was shown that the proposed hybrid stay cable system could be a good alternative to the pure CFRP or traditional steel stay cables in the future applications of super long span bridges.
As few multi-tower single-box multi-cell cable-stayed bridges with corrugated steel webs have been built, analysis is mostly achieved by combining single-girder model, beam grillage model and solid model in support of the design. However, such analysis methods usually suffer from major limitations in terms of the engineering applications: single-girder model fails to account for spatial effect such as shear lag effect of the box girder and the relevant effective girder width and eccentric load coefficient; owing to the approximation in the principle equivalence, the plane grillage model cannot accurately capture shear stress distribution and local stress state in both top and bottom flange of composite box girder; and solid model is difficult to be practically combined with the overall calculation. The usual effective width method fails to provide a uniform and accurate "effective length" (and the codes fail to provide a unified design approach at those circumstance) considering different shear lag effects resulting from dead load, prestress and cable tension in the construction. Therefore, a novel spatial grid model has been developed to account for shear lag effect. The theoretical principle of the proposed spatial grid model has been elaborated along with the relevant illustrations of modeling parameters of composite box girder with corrugated steel webs. Then typical transverse and longitudinal shear lag coefficient distribution pattern at the side-span and mid-span key cross sections have been analyzed and summarized to provide reference for similar bridges. The effectiveness and accuracy of spatial grid analysis methods has been finally validated through a practical cable-stayed bridge.
In this paper, we described the aeroelastic full-bridge model tests that were conducted to investigate the effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures for thecable-stayed bridge during construction to ensure aerodynamic stability in the event of a typhoon or similar disasters. The effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures was investigated through various configurations on two cable-stayed bridges with a main span of 475 m and 230 m, respectively. To investigate the bridge's aerodynamic behaviour and dynamic wind force during construction, the deflections at the end of the cantilever, the accelerations atthe top of the pylon and the moments at the lower part of the pylon were measured. As the result, the system with two sets of vertical cables per cantilever seemed to be the overall most effective solution, but the system with single vertical cable may also work. The combined system using the caisson support and vertical cables and the system with two sets of inclined cables per cantilever on the same anchor block may also be a solution. The inclined cables from the caisson to the girder were effective for some early stages of erecting the deck.

study proposes a new key-segment closing method using thermal effect as a substitute to the process of set-back and reset-back for the FCM construction of a partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge. The proposed method is to artificially heat up the inside of girders located in the main span before closing the key-segment in a cantilever state. Then, the heat is removed after finishing the closure in a continuous bridge state. Using the changes in boundary conditions and structural systems, the proposed method can generate new member forces that reflect the advantage of the partially earth-anchored cable system. From the construction sequence analysis, it is found that the proposed method increases the efficiency of a partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge by reducing the compressive axial forces on the girders.

This paper presents a closing method for a cable-stayed bridge erected by the free cantilever method to produce the initial equilibrium configuration at the final construction stage. To realize the initial equilibrium condition in cable-stayed bridge by the cantilever method, compatibility conditions for vertical displacements, rotational angles, and axial displacements at the closing section of both side girders should be satisfied. In this paper, it was shown that it can be accomplished by using some applicable loads during construction such as the pull-up force of the derrick crane, some cable tension forces, and jacking force at the pylon. The proposed method was applied to a construction stage analysis of a sample bridge to demonstrate its validity, and it was acknowledged that the tower was considerably affected by the compatibility condition for axial displacement in the closing step.
This paper analyses the data collected from the $2^{nd}$ Jindo Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in Korea that is a structural health monitoring (SHM) international test bed for advanced wireless smart sensors network (WSSN) technology. The SHM system consists of a total of 70 wireless smart sensor nodes deployed underneath of the deck, on the pylons, and on the cables to capture the vibration of the bridge excited by traffic and environmental loadings. Analysis of the data is performed in both the time and frequency domains. Modal properties of the bridge are identified using the frequency domain decomposition and the stochastic subspace identification methods based on the output-only measurements, and the results are compared with those obtained from a detailed finite element model. Tension forces for the 10 instrumented stay cables are also estimated from the ambient acceleration data and compared both with those from the initial design and with those obtained during two previous regular inspections. The results of the data analyses demonstrate that the WSSN-based SHM system performs effectively for this cable-stayed bridge, giving direct access to the physical status of the bridge.
Long span bridges such as steel cable stayed and suspension bridges are usually more flexible than short to medium span bridges and expected to have large deformations. Deflections due to live load for long span bridges are important since it controls the overall heights of the bridge for securing the clearance under the bridge and serviceability for securing the comfort of passengers or pedestrians. In case of sea-crossing bridges, the clearance of bridges is determined considering the height of the ship master from the surface of the water, the trim of the ship, the psychological free space, the tide height, and live load deflection. In the design of bridges, live load deflection is limited to a certain value to minimize the vibrations. However, there are not much studies that consider the live load deflection and its effects for long span bridges. The purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of live load deflection limit and its actual effects on serviceability of bridges for steel cable-stayed and suspension bridges. Analytical study is performed to calculate the natural frequencies and deflections by design live load. Results are compared with various design limits and related studies by Barker et al. (2011) and Saadeghvaziri et al. (2012). Two long span bridges are selected for the case study, Yi Sun-Sin grand bridge (suspension bridge, main span length = 1545 m) and Young-Hung grand bridge (cable stayed bridge, main span length = 240 m). Long-term measured deflection data by GNSS system are collected from Yi Sun-Sin grand bridge and compared with the theoretical values. Probability of exceedance against various deflection limits are calculated from probability distribution of 10-min maximum deflection. The results of the study on the limitation of live load deflection are expected to be useful reference for the design, the proper planning and deflection review of the long span bridges around the world.

The reliability analysis can be conducted more effectively by formulating the stochastic finite element method suitable for the reliability theory about the cable stayed bridge. After conducting the initial equilibrium analysis of the cable stayed bridge, the program which can conduct the linear and nonlinear stochastic finite element analysis using the perturbation method and the reliability analysis considered to the correlation of the random variable is developed. Using the results of this program about the cable stayed bridge, the characteristic of the node displacement, element force and cable tension according to the correlation of the random variable is investigated quantitatively. Also the reliability index and the failure probability are examined by the compounding the correlation of the random variable.

A study for the nonlinear solution strategies to predict the ultimate behavior of a curved PSC cable-stayed bridge with complex geometry and highly nonlinear characteristics is presented. The load and displacement control strategies are used and found to be stable for the nonlinear solution of the PSC bridge up to the moderately excessive load. The ultimate analysis of curved PSC cable-stayed bridge using these solution strategies is not converged due to the propagation of the cracks in the wide range of the concrete elements and excessive variation of the stresses in the concrete elements and cables according to the complex geometry. The load control strategy using scale-down of the unbalanced loads is proposed as an alternative method for the case that the solution is not converged due to the severe nonlinearities involved in the PSC structures like a curved PSC cable-stayed bridge. Through the ultimate analysis of the PSC girder, the accuracy and the stability of the proposed solution strategies are evaluated. Finally, the numerical results for the ultimate analysis of the curved PSC cable-stayed bridge using scale-down of the unbalanced loads are compared with those obtained from other investigator. The validity of the proposed nonlinear solution strategy is demonstrated fairly well.

Fuzzy supervisory control technique for the seismic response control of cable-stayed bridges subject to earthquakes is studied. The proposed technique is a hybrid control method, which adopts a hierarchical structure consisting of several sub-controllers and a fuzzy supervisor. Sub-controllers are independently designed to reduced the responses to be controlled of a cable-stayed bridge, and a fuzzy supervisor achieves improved seismic control performance by tuning the pre-designed sub-controllers. It is realized by converting static gains of the sub-controllers into time-varying dynamic gains through the fuzzy inference mechanism. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed technique, the benchmark control problem of cable-stayed bridge proposed by Dyke et al. is adopted. The control variables for the seismic response control of the cable-stayed bridge are determined to be t도 shear forces and bending moments at the base of the towers, the longitudinal displacements at the top of the towers, the relative displacements between the deck and the tower, and the tensions in the stay cables. Comparative results between the fuzzy supervisory controller and LQG controller demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control technique.
