A new class of finite elements is described for dealing with mesh gradation. The approach employs the moving least square (MLS) scheme to devise a class of elements with an arbitrary number of nodal points on the parental domain. This approach generally leads to elements with rational shape functions, which significantly extends the function space of the conventional finite element method. With a special choice of the nodal points and the base functions, the method results in useful elements with polynomial shape functions for which the $C^1$ continuity breaks down across the boundaries between the subdomains comprising one element. Among those, (4 + n)-noded MLS based finite elements possess the generality to be connected with an arbitrary number of linear elements at a side of a given element. It enables us to connect one finite element with a few finite elements without complex remeshing. The effectiveness of the new elements is demonstrated via appropriate numerical examples.
Texturization of plant protein means the physical or chemical recomposition method of plant protein damaged during the extracting process of soybean oil. As a stable protein supplement, substituted for meat, needs of texturized products have been increased. Twin screw extruder is a very effective tool for texturization process as a physical method. This research, using defatted soy flour as raw material and twin screw extruder manufactured in domestic, showed that plant protein was texturized successfully on the operating conditions of barrel temperature of $120{\sim}140^{\circ}C$, material feed rate of 30~36kg/hr and water content of 20~25%. It also showed that the shape of die affected the texturization continuity.
A finite element model is presented for the analysis of composite steel-concrete beams based on a refined high-order theory. The employed theory satisfies all the kinematic and stress continuity conditions at the layer interfaces and considers effects of the transverse normal stress and transverse flexibility. The global displacement components, described by polynomial or combinations of polynomial and exponential expressions, are superposed on local ones chosen based on the layerwise or discrete-layer concepts. The present finite model does not need the incorporating any shear correction factor. Moreover, in the present $C^1$-continuous finite element model, the number of unknowns is independent of the number of layers. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing the present results with those obtained from the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. In addition to correctly predicting the distribution of all stress components of the composite steel-concrete beams, the proposed finite element model is computationally economic.
A digital wave tank (DWT) simulation technique has been developed by authors to investigate the interactions of fully nonlinear waves with 3D marine structures. A finite-difference/volume method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm have been used, which are based on the Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equations. The fully nonlinear kinematic free-surface condition is implemented by the marker-density function (MDF) technique or the Level-Set (LS) technique developed for one or two fluid layers. In this paper, some applications for various engineering problems with free-surface are introduced and discussed. It includes numerical simulation of marine environments by simulation equipments, fully nonlinear wave motions around offshore structures, nonlinear ship waves, ship motions in waves and marine flow simulation with free-surface. From the presented simulations, it seems that the developed DWT simulation technique can handle various engineering problems with free-surface and reliably predict hydrodynamic features due to the fully-nonlinear wave motions interacting with such marine structures.
In this paper presents bending characteristic of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded composite (SWCNTRC-FG) plates. The finite element implementation of bending analysis of laminated composite plate via well-established higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). A seven degree of freedom and $C^0$ continuity finite element model using eight noded isoperimetric elements is developed for precise computation of deflection and stresses of SWCNTRC plate subjected to sinusoidal transverse load. The finite element implementation is carried out through a finite element code developed in MATLAB. The results obtained by present approach are compared with the results available in the literatures. The effective material properties of the laminated SWCNTRC plate are used by Mori-Tanaka method. Numerical results have been obtained with different parameters, width-to-thickness ratio (a/h), stress distribution profile along thickness direction, different SWCNTRC-FG plate, boundary condition, through the thickness (z/h) ratio, volume fraction of SWCNT.

The dynamic stability of spinning beam with free boundary conditions for both edges subjected to a tip follower force $P_0+P_1cos{\Omega}t$ is analyzed. It is studied that the beam has a concentrated mass. and then the effects of the axial locations of the mass are studied. The beam is modelled with the Timoshenko type shear deformations. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion, and the critical spinning speed of a beam subjected to a follower force with various non-dimensional parameters is investigated. The finite elements are used with $C^0$ continuity to analyze the spinning beam model, and the method of multiple scales is tried to investigate the dynamic instability regions. The governing equations of motion involve periodic coefficients, which are not in the form of standard Mathieu-Hill equations. The result shows that the concentrated mass increases the dynamic stability of the spinning free-free beam subjected to a thrust.

A new approach which combines implicit surface scheme and recursive subdivision method is suggested in order to fill the holes with complex shapes in the polygon model. In the method, a base surface is constructed by creating smooth implicit surface from the points selected in the neighborhood of holes. In order to assure C$^1$ continuity between the newly generated surface and the original polygon model, offset points of same number as the selected points are used as the augmented constraint conditions in the calculation of implicit surface. In this paper the well-known recursive subdivision method is used in order to generate the triangular net with good quality using the hole boundary curve and generated base implicit surface. An efficient anisotropic smoothing algorithm is introduced to eliminate the unwanted noise data and improve the quality of polygon model. The effectiveness and validity of the proposed method are demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of holes and polygon model.

This paper is studied on the Junctiion of the large tank and the cylinderical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached a pipe or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle, so it can be approximated that nozzle is attached to plate. The analysis procedure can be viewed as the solution of interdependent subproblems: (a) the stress analysis of the cylinderical shell(nozzle), (b) the plane-stress analysis of the plate membrane problem, and (c) the analysis of the transverse bending deformation in the plate. On the procedure of (a), the Flugge formula are used, and the variables are the length and the ratio of the thickness to the radius of cylinderical shell. The solutions of thess problems are interrelated in the total solution through continuity and equilibrium conditions at the interface of middle planes of the plate and cylinderical shell.
Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. The present work has focused on the simulation of cavitating flow past cylinders with strong side flows. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on the homogeneous mixture model. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved liquid and vapor phase, separately. An implicit dual time and preconditioning method are employed for computational analysis. For the code validation, the results from the present solver have been compared with experiments and other numerical results. A fairly good agreement with the experimental data and other numerical results have been obtained. After the code validation, the strong side flow was applied to include the wake flow effects of the submarine or ocean tide.
Various transition elements are used in general for the effective finite element analysis of complicated mechanical structures. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element, which can b e used for connecting a C1-continuity beam element to a continuum solid element, is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite element are derived to meet the compatibility condition, and a transition element equation is formulated by the conventional finite element procedure. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition element, numerical tests are performed for various examples. As a result of this study, following conclusions are obtained. (1) The proposed transition element, which meets the compatibility of the primary variables, exhibits excellent accuracy. (2) In case of using the proposed transition element, the number of nodes in the finite element model may be considerably reduced and the model construction becomes more convenient. (3) This formulation method can be applied to the usage of higher order elements.
