A Study on the Research Trends and Directions of Bus Information System based on Literature Review (문헌 연구를 통한 버스정보시스템 분야의 연구 동향 및 향후 방향 고찰)

  • Objectives of this study are to analyze the previous research perfomed in the Bus Information System (BIS) area and to suggest future research directions. This is a very meaningful and important work. To accomplish this, this study (1) summarizes the concepts of BIS, (2) establishes a research framework to be used to analyze the previous studies in the area, and (3) identifies and suggest trends and future directions of the BIS research. This study has identified total of 68 article (22 foreign and 46 domestic) using 'Google Scholoar' search engine. Major research results include (1) since non-empirical research is dominant, more explanatory empirical research is needed in the future, (2) research that provides consistent and comprehensive measures for BIS related constructs (e.g., BIS quality) is needed, and (3) impacts on the stakeholders of BIS not reflected in the current research (e.g., bus drivers, administrative agencies) should be analyzed in the future research.

A Study on the Measures on the Decrease of the Traffic Accidents Based on the Attitude Changes of Intra-City Bus Drivers Following the Implementation Semi-Public Management System of Intra-City Bus (시내버스 준공영제 시행에 따른 시내버스 운전자의 운전태도 변화에 근거한 교통사고 저감대책 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The types of the accidents caused by intra-city buses and the changing tendencies of driving attitudes are analyzed before-and-after semi-public management system of intra-city bus system is implemented. On the basis of analysis, the measures on the decrease of traffic accidents are considered and the results are as follows. First, it showed that the traffic accidents decreased generally as a result of definition of the progresses of traffic accidents of intra-city buses before-and-after the system is implemented and with the passing of time after the system was operated. Second, the factors which influence the decrease of traffic offenses before-and-after semi-public management system of intra-city bus are the decease of violation, safe driving duty and the job security. Also the cause which mostly influence to the decrease of traffic accidents is defined. Finally, the measures of decrease of traffic accidents are arranged and proposed as a result of PROXSCAL method.

  • According to the accident statistics published by the National Police Agency in 2007, the number of commercial vehicle accidents explains 3.5 percent of the total number of traffic accidents of the year. Compared to other types of vehicles commercial vehicles may provide more serious damages to both driver himself and passengers. Thus, they generate more serious social and economic problems. There have been various forms of systems such as a digital speedometer or a black box to meet the social requirement for reducing traffic accidents and improving safe driving. However, since the current systems are based on the data often accidents happened, there are lots of limitations to control drivers in real-time. Also, the current speedometers provide drivers with only speeds of vehicles and RPM information regardless of actual dangerous drive behaviors. Therefor, they lack of the effectiveness in terms of safety. In this research, real-time information systems for improving driver safety based on automatic risky driving behaviors, and thresholds to determine risky driving patterns were studied.

The Effects of Combined Exercise Program to Intra-City Bus Driver With Chronic Neck Pain : Case Report (만성 경부통을 가진 시내버스 운전기사에게 복합 운동프로그램의 효과 : 사례연구)

  • Background: Although many of those who drive for a living are exposed to repetitive and awkward posture and whole body vibration which cause them cumulative trauma disorder, therapeutic studies related to the problems from the transport unit are still somewhat inadequate. The purpose of this case report is to identify the effect of combined exercise program on patients suffering chronic neck pain caused by long hour of intra-city bus driving. Method: A total of 4 subjects are selected as patients, all of whom have more than 10 years of experience in intra-city bus transportation services. These people have suffered from neck pain for years. We ran the combined exercise program 3 times a week for 4 weeks and respectively evaluated the results after the 2nd and 4th week. We implemented conventional physiotherapy for 40 minutes, another 40 minutes of combined exercise program, and then educated the patients to enable themselves to do active stretching program as a home program. The combined exercise program contained 3 different stages. 1st stage: active stretching program, 2nd stage combined stabilization exercise and strengthening exercise, 3rd stage: proprioceptive exercise Result: After 4 weeks of intervention, there was enhance in the range of motion. $12^{\circ}$ increase in flexion, $10^{\circ}$ in extension, $6^{\circ}$ in lateral flexion respectively, and $10^{\circ}$ in rotation on average. VAS(visual analgue scale) decreased by 33% on average, NDI(neck diability index) by 28% and fatigability by 23%. Conclusion: There were improved results in the range of motion, NDI, VAS, and in fatigability after applying combined exercise program to intra-city bus drivers exposed to whole body vibration and cumulative trauma disorder.

Determining Level-of-Service Criteria of Headway Adherence (버스 운행 정시성의 서비스수준 기준산정)

  • In case of public transit such as bus system, the probability concept is used to evaluate the Level-of-Service of the operations. And each levels could be classified according to the linear probability value. (TCQSM: Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual-2nd Edition, TRB, Washington DC., 2003) In this case, the drivers or passengers wouldn't think that the service level isn't equivalent to the linear probability value. Thus the linear probability value doesn't exactly reflect the service level. This study shows the problems of using the linear probability value in classifying the service level through the case of evaluation of bus operation's punctuality, presented in TCQSM. To make up for the problems of such case, two methodologies are presented in this study. The method of determining Level-of-Service criteria using probability density of headway variation's distribution, presented in this paper, adequately reflects passenger's expected waiting time. According to the application result to real bus operation data, it tis better than the method of TCQSM to evaluate the reliability of bus operations. However further research about the relations between utility difference and passenger feeling of service level in necessary to apply the method that uses the utility function. It remains as the limitation of this paper.

The Health Effects of Whole Body Vibration

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to review the hazards of whole body vibration(WBV) and prevent human injuries due to WBV. Background: Vibrations that shake the whole body in vehicles and vessels is WBV. Vibration at a specific frequency, and intensity in the human body can act as a hazard. But, it has not yet done enough research about effects of WBV. Method: We analyzed and reviewed occupational or ergonomic papers published past 30 years. Results: Exposure to whole body vibration can cause permanent physical injury or damage of the nervous system. In addition, it may cause problem in the cardiovascular system, digestive system, musculoskeletal system, endocrine system, reproductive system, and psychological system. The effect of vibration depends on its acceleration, duration, frequency, and direction. Conclusion: WBV-exposed human body experience a high risk of some illnesses such as lumbar spinal disorders. Some workers(bus drivers, truck drivers and heavy equipment operators) are the high risk population exposed to WBV. Application: The results of this study might help to judge and prevent occupational disease caused by WBV.

  • To alleviate the demand on private car that is constantly increasing, Busan Metropolitan City (BMC) has established Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to revitalize public transportation. But there are no unified lane system between BRT and general bus stations, which makes off-lane turning general bus to contribute to congestion. And as the bottleneck phenomenon at entrance/exit accelerates the congestion, there has been huge dissatisfaction among commuting drivers. Therefore, this study identifies efficient methods to operate better through measuring civilian awareness. We evaluate both satisfaction and drawbacks on BRT service with Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). We first distinguish the groups by the awareness on BRT and their main transit usage, and then clarify the difference between the groups. And as a result, the group who is positive to BRT and uses buses often demands improvement in bus indoor comfort and curbing jaywalking. On the other hand, group who is negative to BRT and uses private cars often demands improvement in lane changing and the moving speed of private cars. We next examines the groups with MDPREF, one method of Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). And we have clarified that the evaluating criteria and the individual attributes of the groups corresponds very well.

  • Recently, many safety accidents involving children shuttle buses take place. Without a teacher for help, a safety accident occurs when the driver can't see a child who is getting off in the blind spot of both frontside and backside. A deep learning-based smart mirror allows user authentication and provides various services. Especially, It can be a role of helper for children, and prevent accidents that can occur when drivers or assistant teachers do not see them. User authentication is carried out with children's face registered in advance. Safety accidents can be prevented by an approximate sensor and a camera in frontside and backside of the bus. This study suggests a way of checking out whether children are missed in the process of getting in and out of the bus, designs a system that reduce blind spots in the front and back of the vehicle, and builds a safety system that provide various services using GPS.

  • Metropolitan buses are managed as either a direct seat type or a metropolitan express type according to the 「Passenger Transport Service Act」. However, a management system that reflects the characteristics of metropolitan buses is not currently established. Therefore, in this study, the driving characteristics of metropolitan buses, dangerous driving behavior characteristics of metropolitan bus drivers, metropolitan bus accident characteristics, and the safety management system of domestic and foreign buses and other means were investigated. Through this, a plan for strengthening the safety management of metropolitan buses suitable for Korea was presented by dividing it into short-term and mid to long term. The short-term plan is a plan that can be carried out through consultation between metropolitan bus agencies and transportation companies, and the mid to long term plan is a plan that can be implemented only when related laws are revised. Through this study, it is expected to serve as an opportunity for in-depth discussions by the government, business operators, and related experts to strengthen the safety management of metropolitan buses.

  • AiPi technology incorporates an embedded clock and control scheme with a point-to-point bus topology, achieving the smallest possible number of interface lines between a timing controller and source drivers. A 46" AiPi-based 10-bit FHD prototype requires only 20 interface lines, compared to 38 lines for mini-LVDS. The measured maximum data rate per one data pair is more than 800Mbps.
