The third generation mobile communication needs to provide multimedia service with increased data rates. Thus an efficient allocation of radio and network resources is very important. This paper models the 'burst switching' as an efficient radio resource allocation scheme and the performance is compared to the circuit and packet switching. In burst switching, radio resource is allocated to a call for the duration of data bursts rather than an entire session or a single packet as in the case of circuit and packet switching. After a stream of data burst, if a packet does not arrive during timer2 value ($\tau_{2}$), the channel of physical layer is released and the call stays in suspended state. Again if a packet does not arrive for timerl value ($\tau_{1}$) in the suspended state, the upper layer is also released. Thus the two timer values to minimize the sum of access delay and queuing delay need to be determined. In this paper, we focus on the decision of $\tau_{2}$ which minimizes the access and queueing delay with the assumption that traffic arrivals follow Poison process. The simulation, however, is performed with Pareto distribution which well describes the bursty traffic. The computational results show that the delay and the packet loss probability by the burst switching is dramatically reduced compared to the packet switching.
In this paper, a packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithm for CELP-type speech coders is proposed to improve the quality of decoded speech under a burst packet loss condition. The proposed algorithm is based on the recovery of voiced excitation using an estimate of the voicing probability and the generation of random excitation by permutating the previously decoded excitation. The voicing probability is estimated from the correlation using the previous correctly decoded excitation and pitch. The proposed algorithm is implemented as a PLC algorithm for G.729 and its performance is compared with PLC employed in G.729 by means of perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) and an A-B preference test under the random and burst packet losses with rates of 3% and 5%. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides better speech quality than the PLC of G.729, especially under burst pack losses.
This paper presents a robust error concealment method for burst-packet-loss networks. The proposed error concealment algorithm can reduce the computational complexities of the existing error concealment methods. Moreover, experimental results show that the proposed method produces the better video quality than the conventional boundary matching algorithm.

Because a packet loss brings about degradation of speech quality, VoIP speech coders have PLC (Packet Loss Concealment) mechanism. G.711, which is a mandatory VoIP speech coder, also has the PLC algorithm based on pitch period replication. However, it is not robust to burst losses. Thus, we propose two methods to improve the performance of the original PLC algorithm in G.711. One adaptively utilizes voiced/unvoiced information of adjacent good frames regarding to the current lost frame. The other is based on adaptive gain control according to energy variation across the frames. We evaluate the performance of the proposed PLC algorithm by measuring a PESQ value under different random and burst packet loss simulating conditions. It is shown from the experiments that the performance of the proposed PLC algorithm outperforms that of PLC employed in ITU-T Recommendation G.711.

High packet loss rate and impatience of messages passing through optical switches are essential characteristics in Optical Burst Switching system equipped with Optic Delay Lines buffer, which have not been solved efficiently yet by current existing models. In order to capture both effects, this paper introduces an analytical model from the viewpoint of classical queuing theory with impatient customers. We then apply it to evaluate and compare two wavelength-sharing cases, (1) all delay lines share a common wavelength resource and (2) each wavelength is associated with a number of delay lines. Our numerical results suggest to implement the first case because of lower packet loss rate for a fairly broad range of traffic load.

In this paper, we propose the burst error reduction (BER) algorithm for VoIP service in the wireless LAN network. In end point device, this BER algorithm can be achieved packet loss bounded QoS provisioning using interleaving in buffering and FEC (Forward Error Correction) through transmitting voice packet. BER algorithm can reduced the voice packet loss rate 5.5%-60% in VoIP network using wireless LAN.
In recent years, the needs for WLANs(Wireless Local Area Networks) technology which can access to Internet anywhere have been dramatically increased particularly in SOHO(Small Office Home Office) and Hot Spot. However, unlike wired networks, there are some unique characteristics of wireless networks. These characteristics include the burst packet losses due to unreliable wireless channel. Note that burst packet losses, which occur when the distance between the wireless station and the AP(Access Point) increase or when obstacles move temporarily between the station and AP, are very frequent in 802.11 networks. Conversely, due to burst packet losses, the performance of 802.11 networks are not always as sufficient as the current application require, particularly when they use TCP at the transport layer. The high packet loss rate over wireless links can trigger unnecessary execution of TCP congestion control algorithm, resulting in performance degradation. In order to overcome the limitations of WLANs environment, MAC-layer LDA(Loss Differentiation Algorithm)has been proposed. MAC-layer LDA prevents TCP's timeout by increasing CRD(Consecutive Retry Duration) higher than burst packet loss duration. However, in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, MAC-layer LDA does not work well because of two reason: (a) If the CRD is lower than burst packet loss duration due to the limited increase of retry limit, end-to-end performance is degraded. (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily by Reducing the drainage speed of the network buffer due to the increase of CRD. In this paper, we propose a new retransmission module based on Cross-layer approach, called BLD(Burst Loss Detection) module, to solve the limitation of previous link layer retransmission schemes. BLD module's algorithm is retransmission mechanism at IEEE 802.11 networks and performs retransmission based on the interaction between retransmission mechanisms of the MAC layer and TCP. From the simulation by using ns-2(Network Simulator), we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency with the proposed scheme than previous mechanisms.

In this paper, the data recovery performance of systematic erasure codes in burst loss environments is analyzed and the estimation method of redundant data according to loss characteristics is suggested. The burstness of packet loss is modeled by Gilbert model, and the performance of proposed packet loss recovery method in the case of using systematic erasure code is analyzed based on previous study on the loss recovery in the case of using erasure code. The required redundancy data fitting method for systematic erasure code in the condition of given loss property is suggested in the consideration of packet loss characteristics such as average packet loss rate and average loss length.

In this paper a communication system using direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) technique is constructed to transmit burst format data over power line channel with impulsive noise and narrowband interferences. Fast code synchronization is acquired by digital matched filter and data decision is accomplished by sampling pulses. In order to examine the performance of the power line communication system, but error rate and packet loss rate are measured over the simulation channel with various noise sources. When the packet composed of 1-bit preamble and 63-bit data is transmitted under very high burst impulsive noise, the bit error rate is about 10$^3$-10$^4$ and the packet loss rate is below 0.07.

Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks usually employ one-way reservation by sending a burst control packet (BCP) with a specific offset time, before transmitting each data burst frame (BDF). Therefore, The quality of service may be degraded because contentions may lead to loss of BDFs. Especially, this phenomenon becomes more serious when burst size is longer. This necessitates an effective method of prevention to avoid burst collision in nodes. OBS networks can employ several methods to avoid such burst losses. One is that burst size is cut short to reduce burst loss probability during scheduling time. In this paper, we evaluate the burst generation and transmission using Sub-Carrier Multiplexting (SCM) in OBS networks. We propose an appropriate burst assembly architecture and transmission scheme based on SCM in OBS networks. The performance of SCM in OBS networks is examined in terms of number of Sub-Carriers per wavelength, burst loss probability, throughput, and total bandwidth of an optical fiber.
