  • In Korea, 'forest welfare' is officially included as a policy object and used as an academic term. The Korea Forest Service strives to provide a forest welfare services suitable for each life cycle from birth to death, and the public is highly aware of the need for these policies. The demand for National Woodland Burial Grounds is expected to increase as the interest in natural burials including woodland burial is increasing. As the demand for the Woodland Burial Grounds is increasing, there is only one National Woodland Burial Grounds currently available. Although other forest welfare facilities, such as natural recreation forests, must have undergone feasibility assessment according to relevant laws before approval of the designation, there are no institutions performing Woodland Burial Grounds feasibility assessments at the time. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the policies to cope with the increased demand. This study used GIS to prepare the basic data to be used in the process of selecting suitable forest locations. The area that cannot be used according to related laws was analyzed and the size of the possible areas in the state forests was assessed.

  • A study was conducted to determine the effect of depth of burial, soil temperature and/or moisture on tuber sprouting of E, kuroguwai. Tubers were evenly distributed in the upper 30cm of soil. Tuber weight increased as depth of tuber formed increased. No dormancy in newly formed tubers was found, whereas mature tubers were dormant. When new tubers were subjected both to continuous $5^{\circ}C$ and to gradual decreasing temperatures regimes ranged from 20 to $1^{\circ}C$ for 30 days, the tubers remained non-dormant. Viability of tubers was reduced when buried at 5cm depth in dry and moist soil conditions, but no reduction was obtained when buried at 25cm depth, regardless of soil moisture conditions employed. Percent sprouting of tubers buried at 25cm depth increased with increasing duration of burial in three soil moisture conditions studied, wherease in dry and moist conditions percent sprouting of tubers buried at 25cm depth increased by 60-day burial and thereafter decreased. In submerged condition, tuber sprouting was greater when buried at 5cm depth than when buried at 25cm depth, and increased as duration of burial increased at the both depths.

  • Recent outbreak of cattle diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease(FMD) requires constant monitoring of burial sites of mass cull of cattles. However, current monitoring system takes environmental samples from burial sites with period of between one and two weeks, which makes it impossible for non-stop management of hazardous bio-waste. Therefore, in this study, we suggest an improved real-time environmental monitoring system for such bio-hazardous sites based on wireless sensor networks, which makes constant surveillance of the FMD burial sites possible. The system consists mainly several wireless environmental monitoring sensors(i.e dust, Co2, VOC, NH3, H2S, temperature, humidity) nodes and GPS location tracking nodes. Through analysis of the relayed of the environmental monitoring data via gateway, the system makes it possible for constant monitoring and quick response for emergency situation of the burial sites. In order to test the effectiveness of the system, we have installed a set of sensor to gas outlets of the burial sites, then collected and analyzed measured bio-sensing data. We have conducted simulated emergency test runs and was able to detect and monitor the foul smell constantly. With our study, we confirm that the preventive measures and quick response of bio environmental accident are possible with the help of a real-time environmental monitoring system.

  • The demand for National Woodland Burial Grounds is expected to increase as interest in natural burial, including woodland burial, is increasing. This study was performed to provide evaluation criteria applying weighting factors to the evaluation for location selection. Through literature review, location selection evaluation factors for forest facilities, similar to forest welfare facilities, were reviewed and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, 74 preliminary evaluation criteria were selected. Based on the results, three expert groups (public servants in central and local governments and other public agencies in charge of forest welfare facility, related field researchers, and civil experts) reviewed the preliminary evaluation factors. Evaluation factors were classified into two categories, 6 sub-categories, and 22 segments. The selected evaluation factors were layered for the second preference survey. They were classified into Forest Environment and Human Environment, and those categories were further classified into three categories. Then they were further classified into segments. After segmentation, the experts who participated in the first survey checked the differences in the significance of the layered factors by utilizing AHP. The site evaluation criteria table was prepared using the evaluation criteria and the significance of each layer. In order to apply it to the candidate sites, 10 sites including the existing National Woodland Burial Grounds and 9 candidate sites considered in the previous studies were compared and analyzed including Ulju County Ulsan City, Suncheon City Jeollanam-do and Janggun-myeon Sejeong City.

  • Pipeline is very important infrastructure which is directly related to our daily life. Nevertheless, it is not considered significantly unless it breaks. As most pipelines are buried at a certain depth from the surface of road pavement in urban areas, they are subjected to traffic load. This paper presents the performance of buried concrete pipe under heavy traffic load. Hence, one of the major factors affecting their performance is burial depth. To consider this factor, the ratio of burial depth (H) to diameter of pipe (D) was defined as a key variable. The integrity of buried concrete pipe was investigated with two cases of ratio of burial depth to pipe diameter (H/D=2 and H/D=4). The results provide the limit burial depth to ensure the soundness of buried concrete pipe subjected to heavy traffic load, and more economical design is anticipated with the results.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the vulnerability for groundwater contamination at the some cemeteries in Gyeonggi Province. Twenty-eight out of 43 cemeteries in Gyeonggi province were selected for this study. The DRASTIC model was applied to those cemeteries, and the reliance of the model was assessed using the water quality data of the target areas. The DRASTIC model was used for the assessment of the potential for groundwater contamination using hydrogeological factors. Seven factors including depth of water, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer were assessed. The DRASTIC index of the study area ranged from 82 to 126 with an average value of $113.99(\pm11.48)$. The DRASTIC index was relatively greater in the northern Gyeonggi province than that in the southern area. The DRASTIC index was similar for the areas with the similar burial rate and burial density. This study demonstrated that burial rate and burial density should be considered along with the 7 basic factors for the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability of the cemeteries.

  • Earthquake time-history analyses have been carried out for a buried gas pipeline of X65 which is of popular use in Korea. Parameters included are shape of a buried gas pipeline, soil characteristics, single and multiple earthquake input ground motions and burial depths. Predicted response of strain and relative displacement are then compared with allowable strain and displacement capacity calculated by Guidelines for the Seismic Design of Buried Gas Pipelines, KOGAS. Comparative studies show that strains are in general affected by the burial depths together with change of soil conditions. Regarding the relative displacement, while axial relative displacement is not influenced by the burial depths, transverse relative displacement is affected by both burial depths as well as soil conditions. In all, the current study is encouraged to give a useful information for healthy earthquake evaluation of a buried pipeline.

  • Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and avian influenza (AI) are highly pathogenic viral disease which affects the livestock industry worldwide. Outbreak of these viruses causes great impact in the livestock industry; thus, disease infected animals were immediately disposed. Burial is the commonly used disposal method for deceased animals. However, there is potential for secondary environmental contamination, as well as the risk that infectious agents persisting in the environment due to the limited environmental controls in livestock burial sites during the decomposition of the carcasses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the detection of FMD and AI viruses from animal carcass disposal sites using real-time reverse transcription PCR. Soil samples of more than three years post-burial from livestock carcass disposal sites were collected and processed RNA isolation using a commercial extraction kit. The isolated RNA of the samples was used for the detection of FMDV and AIV using qRT-PCR. Based on the qPCR assay result, no viral particle was detected in the soil samples collected from the animal disposal sites. This indicates that 3 years of burial and their carcass disposal method is efficient for the control or at least reduction of spread infections in the surrounding environment.

  • The granulometric characteristics and chemical composition of the samples from the Bukpyeong myeon, Hainam gun, Jeollanam do were analyzed in this study. The samples were collected from the outcrop of coastal area where the height is about 30m. The burial age of the sediments also estimated by OSL(Optically Stimulated Luminescence) method. The origin and forming processes of the samples are not clear in this stage as limited number of evidences can be found. However it is suggested that the samples are not aeolian deposits originated from chinese loess by the chemical analysis. The mean diameter of samples were $5{\sim}6{\varphi}(silt)$ and are increased slightly downwards. The samples also well sorted. The samples have been heavily weathered by the chemical alteration index. The value of CIA increase downward rapidly at the upper part of outcrop, then stabilized afterwards. The vertical concentration changes ratio of cations varies; Si increases downwards while Fe, Ti, K and Mg decrease. There are fluctuation in concentration ratio of Na and Ca with increasing depth. The burial age of sample from upper part are estimated as $104.52{\pm}4.45ka\;BP$, while that of lower part are $136.10{\pm}6.52ka\;BP$, and they fall in to last part of MS6. The deposition rate for this site is found about 0.017mm/year. The uplift rate of the site is supposed to be 0.24~0.26m/ka with assumption of palaeo-sea level of +6m. However the origin of the sediment deposits should be explored and cleared.

  • The lower marine terrace 1 and 2 surfaces distributed between Ulsan and Pohang coast in the southeastern coast of the Korean penninsula have been correlated with MIS 5e and 5a (or 5c) by amino acid dates, 14C dates, wide-spread tephra correlation and pollen analysis respectively. In this study, to test the reliability of the OSL method for the estimation of the numerical burial age of marine sediment deposits, we analyzed the samples from the marine terraces which have been known as typical marine terraces formed during MIS 5e and MIS 5a in the above-mentioned coast. The burial ages of the marine deposit of the lower marine terrace 1 and 2, with paleoshoreline altitudes of 18m to 19m and 10m to 11m respectively, both showed about the same age of 60 ka BP. The lower marine terraces 1 and 2, however, were divided into two terrace surfaces by a clear terrace cliff. Besides, the OSL dates of the lower and upper parts of the lower marine terrace 2 of the Bonggil coast showed the reversed burial ages. In the lower marine terrace 1 of the Sanhari coast, almost the same burial ages were derived from both the lower part (marine rounded gravel layer) and the upper part (terrestrial angular gravel layer) of the terrace deposit. Therefore, at the present time, judging from only the OSL dates measured in this study, it could be argued that the OSL method is not the best for the estimation of forming periods of the lower marine terraces 1 and 2 and their classification.
