  • Aerodynamic characteristics of crescent and D-shape bundled conductors were measured by high frequency force balance technique in the wind tunnel. The drag and lift coefficients of each sub-conductor and the whole bundled conductors were presented under various attack angles of wind. The galloping possibility of bundled conductors is discussed based on the Den Hartog criterion. The influence of icing thickness, initial ice accretion angle and sub-conductor on the aerodynamic properties were investigated. Based on the measured aerodynamic force coefficients, a computationally efficient finite element method is also implemented to analyze galloping of iced bundled conductors. The analysis results show that each sub-conductor of the bundled conductor has its own galloping feature due to the use of aerodynamic forces measured separately for every single sub-conductors.

  • Wind-induced oscillations are known to cause damage to the conductors and related hardware through fatigue, clashing of the bundled conductors and bolt loosening. Wake-induced oscillations have been known since the advent of bundled conductors. they are caused by aerodynamically unstable forces acting on the leeward conductors in the wake of the windward conductors, In order to control it, spacer dampers are installed in transmission lines with bundled conductors. Spacer damper installation is very important, it can cause damage to the conductors and spaer damper itself. This paper suggests importance of spacer damper installation in bundled conductor systems.

  • We introduces a mobile robot that can navigate on a power transmission line arranged in bundled conductors. The designs of the proposed robot are performed for navigation on bundled conductors, and the navigation method for bundled conductors and obstacle avoidance are presented. The robot consists of 13 degrees of freedom (DOF) with a symmetrical structure for the left and right parts, including the four wheel joints. The navigation method is designed using a combination of three motion primitives such as linear motion of counterbalancing box, linear motion of robot arm, and rotational motion of wheel part. To examine the performance of the proposed robot, navigation simulations are conducted using $ADAMS^{TM}$. The robot navigations were simulated on obstacle environments that consisted of two- and four-conductor bundles. Based on the simulation results, the performance of the proposed robot was reviewed through the analysis of the trajectories of end-effectors. We confirmed that the proposed robot was capable of achieving optimal navigation on bundled conductors that included obstacles.

  • The unbalance current on the bundled conductors of the UHV overhead transmission line is one of the factors affected on power transmission system. It is varied by distance between of bundled conductors and of phase to phase, phase arrangement. In this paper, we calculated unbalance current on the bundled conductors by a variety of line arrangements and also calculated magnetic field at the circumference of the line fed with this unbalance current.

  • Wind-induced oscillations are known to cause damage to the conductors and related hardware through fatigue, clashing of the bundled conductors and bolt loosening. Wake-induced oscillations have been known since the advent of bundled conductors, they are caused by aerodynamically unstable forces acting on the leeward conductors in the wake of the windward conductors, They take the form of horizontal galloping, snaking or rolling, in which case all subconductors move together in unison. They can also take the form of the subspan oscillation, which appear as elliptical motions of the subconductors moving out of phase, mainly in the horizontal plane within a subspan. In order to decrease amplitudes of the oscillation, this paper examines the application status of the spacer dampers and suggests proper installation methods.

  • The oscillation is very dangerous in bundled transmission lines, especially 345kV 4 bundle transmission lines are very weak for subspan oscillations. In some cases, subspan oscillations are continuously occurred in the same subspan. In order to develop the control method of the above subspan oscillation, this paper suggests a method of applying spacers for 2 bundled conductors to the subspans. In the future we will try to observe and analyze the oscillation after installing the spacers for 2 bundled conductors, and suggest the effective method for controling subspan oscillations.

  • Kissing of sub-conductors due to magnetic forces has been investigated in a 154 kV bundled overhead transmission line. With increasing ampacity of the conductors and enlarging the distance between spacers, lager magnetic force was measured. When the phase ampacity was 2,000 amps and the distance between two adjacent spacers was 68 m, for instance, the conductors became unstable and vibrated with a frequency of several herts. Furthermore, when the ampacity was 2,250 amps and the distance between spacers was 136 m, the two sub-conductors were contacted. Analysing the magnetic forces with distance of spacers, the safe distance of spacers to avoid contact of sub-conductors was presented. The change of the safe distance is discussed due to various parameters, such as residual stresses and wind pressures, in the real transmission lines.

  • Spacer Dampers must be carefully designed and tested. Because it can protect conductors from conductor oscillations due to winds and electrical forces. If the spacer damper has any problems in itself, it may cause extensive damage to the transmission lines. This paper suggests a design method and considerations of spacer damper for bundled conductor transmission lines.

  • This paper presents a collection of a number of observations made on 4 bundled conductor transmission lines concerning the behaviour of conductors under the effect of natural winds. Namely in order to know the wind-induced vibration status and study wind-induced vibrations have been recorded and analyzed form the real transmission lines. By the field observation and analysis results, subspan oscillations among the wind-induced vibrations is known to be the main type of the vibrations. And some common characteristics of the observation sites, which have had high maintenance rate, can be found from the data also. It is considered that the main results described in this paper will be useful data and be used in controlling the subspan oscillations and protecting the conductors.
