In order to control seismic responses of building structures effectively and stably, it is very important to estimate the dynamic characteristics of target structure exactly based on input-output signal data. In this paper, it is shown that Subspace Identification Method is able to be applied effectively to system identification of building structures. To verify the efficiency of Subspace Identification Method, the vibration experiments were conducted on a specimen structure which is a 5-storied building structure model consisted of H-shaped steel beam, and the simulated seismic responses of the identified structure model were compared with the observed ones under the same excitation. It was observed that the experimental results coincided with the analyzed ones proposed in this paper.
The shape of a tall building has significant impact on wind force generation and wind-induced dynamic response. To study the effect of recessed cavities, wind excitations on a wind-tunnel model of an H-section tall building were compared with those on a square-section building model. Characteristics of the fluctuating wind pressures on the side faces of the two tall buildings and their role in the generation of crosswind forces on the buildings were investigated with the space-time statistical tool of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). This paper also compares the use of different pressure data sets for POD analysis in situations where pressures on two different surfaces are responsible for the generation of a wind force. The first POD mode is found to dominate the generation of crosswind excitation on the buildings.
Application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is introduced to study wind speed and building roof pressures of flow separation region. In this study, a detailed analysis of the approach wind flow, wind-induced building pressure and the relation between the two fields was carried out using the POD technique and CWT analysis. The results show potential of the application of POD and CWT in characterization of spatio-temporal and spectral properties of the approach wind and its induced dynamic pressure events. Some of findings resulting from the application of this analysis can be summarized as follows: (1) The POD first principal coordinate of the roof pressure in the separated shear layer is closely correlated with the longitudinal component of oncoming flow. (2) The CWT analysis suggests that the extreme peak pressure in the separated shear layer is due to condensed large-scale eddy motions.
A number of structural and modal parameters are derived from the strong motion records of an instrumented G + 9 storeyed RC building during Bhuj earthquake, 26 Jan. 2001 in India. Some of the extracted parameters are peak floor accelerations, storey drift and modal characteristics. Modal parameters of the building are also compared with the values obtained from ambient vibration survey of the instrumented building after the occurrence of earthquake. These parameters are further used for calibrating the accuracy of fixed-base Finite Element (FE) models considering structural and non-structural elements. Some conclusions are drawn based on theoretical and experimental results obtained from strong motion records and time history analysis of FE models. An important outcome of the study is that strong motion peak acceleration profile in two horizontal directions is close to FE model in which masonry infill walls are modeled.
Dynamic and fragmented characteristics ale two of the most significant factors that distinguish the construction industry from other industries. Previous forecasting techniques have failed to solve the problems derived from the above characteristics and do not provide considerable support. This paper deals with providing a more precise forecasting by applying Case-based Reasoning (CBR). The newly developed model in this study enables project managers to forecast monthly expenditures with less time and effort by retrieving and referring only projects of a similar nature, while filtering out irrelevant cases included in database. For the purpose of accurate forecasting. the choice of the numbers of referring projects was investigated. it is concluded that selecting similar projects at $5\~6\;\%$ out of the whole database will produce a more precise forecasting. The new forecasting model. which suggests the predicted values based on previous projects, is more than just a forecasting methodology it provides a bridge that enables current data collection techniques to be used within the context of the accumulated information. This will eventually help all the participants in the construction industry to build up the know ledge derived from invaluable experience.

In this paper, the wind-induced response of Jiayuguan wooden building (world cultural heritage) in Northwest China was studied. ANSYS finite element software was used to establish four kinds of building models under different working conditions and carry out modal analysis. The simulation results were compared with the field dynamic test results, obtaining the model which reflects the real vibration characteristics of the wooden tower. Time history data of fluctuating wind speed was obtained by MATLAB programming. Time domain method and ANSYS were used to analyze the wind-induced vibration response time history of Jiayuguan wooden building, obtaining the displacement time history curve of the structure. It was suggested that the wind-induced vibration coefficient of Jiayuguan wooden building is 1.76. Through analysis of the performance of the building under equivalent static wind load, the maximum displacement occurs in the three-story wall, gold column and the whole roof area, and the maximum displacement of the building is 5.39 cm. The ratio of the maximum stress value to the allowable value of wood tensile strength is 45 %. The research results can provide reference for the wind resistant design and protection of ancient buildings with similar structure to Jiayuguan wooden tower.
Nowadays natural resources on shore have been almost exhausted all over the world and mankind is beginning searching for unexploited resources on the bed of deep-sea floor. In exploring mineral resources and etc. in the ground of sea-bed, a sumbersible craft is one of the most important tools. These days, the stage of the technique of building and operating an exploring submersible craft is almost alike that of building and operating an airplane in the first years of the nineteen-twenties. At the present time, the problems arising in building and operating a submersible craft can be divided into four parts as follows; 1. How to build a hull that can bear high pressure under deep sea level. 2. How to decide the necessary facilities to be put on it. 3. How to decide the scope of stabilities and maneuvering characteristics of it. 4. On what sea conditions, the devices of launching and recovering it should be designed on the mother-ship. In this paper treating one of the third problems the author made a mathematic formula that can be useful in deciding the scope of dynamic course stability on the vertical plane and actually calculated the onset speed of pitch instability of an exploring craft. With the above mentioned calculations the author demonstrated that the value of $Z_g$ and the speed of a submerged craft are the most important factors in decideing the scope of dynamic stability on the vertical plane.
Korea is part of a region of low or moderate seismic zone in which few earthquakes have been monitored, so it is difficult to approve design ground motions and seismic responses on structures from response spectrum. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests for demonstrating seismic amplification characteristics in soil-foundation-structure system were performed using electro-hydraulic shaking table mounted on the KOCED 5.0 m radius beam centrifuge at KAIST in Korea. The soil model were prepared by raining dry sand and $V_S$ profiles were determined by performing bender element tests before shaking. The foundation types used in this study are shallow embedded foundation and deep basement fixed on the bottom. Total 7 building structures were used and the response of building structures were compared with response spectrum from the acceleration records on surface.
We developed eco-friendly lightweight concrete in order to apply eco-friendly lightweight concrete into structural wall or slab of shallow depth urban railway system. However, since lightweight aggregate has different structural feature of porous and it has been overvalued at current KS standard when applied, we did compare the characteristics of freezing and thawing of normal weight aggregate concrete by comparative test method(KS, ASTM). According to test method, there was a big difference of dynamic elastic modulus in lightweight concrete rather than in normal weight aggregate concrete. The big absorption factor in lightweight aggregate is main reason for that. For more detail, in KS law in which only 14 days water curing is carried out, the big amount of moisture in lightweight aggregate is frozen and high heaving pressure occurs and finally that lead to destruction of lightweight concrete. Therefore, it is considered that in case of lightweight concrete, resistibility against freezing and thawing has been undervalued in domestic KS law compared to ASTM law, which is overseas standard. So, a variety of examination about testing criteria and rule would be necessary for exact assessment of lightweight concrete.
