The objective of this paper is to present the results of an experimental and a finite-element investigation into the behavior of X80 grade pipes subjected to bending. For the pipe specimens comprising the test series, different D/t is applied to be representative of those that can be expected in the field. Results from the numerical models are checked against the observations in the testing program and the ability of numerical solutions to predict pipe moment capacity. curvatures. and buckling modes is established. A finite-element model was developed using the finite-element simulator to predict the local buckling behavior of pipes. The comparison between the numerical and the experimental results demonstrates the ability of the analytical model to predict the local buckling behavior of pipes when deformed well into the post-yield range.
Large post-buckling behavior of Timoshenko beams subjected to non-follower axial compression loads are studied in this paper by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Two types of support conditions for the beams are considered. In the case of beams subjected to compression loads, load rise causes compressible forces end therefore buckling and post-buckling phenomena occurs. It is known that post-buckling problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The beams considered in numerical examples are made of lower-Carbon Steel. In the study, the relationships between deflections, rotational angles, critical buckling loads, post-buckling configuration, Cauchy stress of the beams and load rising are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.

Cracks and defects may occur anywhere in a plate under tension. Cracks can affect the buckling stability performance and even the failure mode of the plate. A search of the literature reveals that the reported research has mostly focused on the study of plates with central and small cracks. Considering the effectiveness of cracks on the buckling behavior of plates, this study intends to investigate the effects of some key parameters, i.e., crack size and location as well as the plate aspect ratio and support conditions, on the buckling behavior, stress intensity factor (SIF), and the failure mode (buckling or fracture) in cracked plates under tension. To this end, a sophisticated mathematical code was developed using MATLAB in the frame-work of extended finite element method (XFEM) in order to analyze the buckling stability and collapse of numerous plate models. The results and findings of this research endeavor show that, in addition to the plate aspect ratio and support conditions, careful consideration of the crack location and size can be quite effective in buckling behavior assessment and failure mode prediction as well as SIF evaluation of the cracked plates subjected to tensile loading.
Creating different cutout shapes in order to make doors and windows, reduce the structural weight or implement various mechanisms increases the likelihood of buckling in thin-walled structures. In this study, the effect of cutout shape and geometric imperfection (GI) is simultaneously investigated on the critical buckling load and knock-down factor (KDF) of composite cylindrical shells. The GI is modeled using single perturbation load approach (SPLA). First, in order to assess the finite element model, the critical buckling load of a composite shell without cutout obtained by SPLA is compared with the experimental results available in the literature. Then, the effect of different shapes of cutout such as circular, elliptic and square, and perturbation load imperfection (PLI) is investigated on the buckling behavior of cylindrical shells. Results show that the critical buckling load of a shell without cutout decreases by increasing the PLI, whereas increasing the PLI does not have a great impact on the critical buckling load in the presence of cutout imperfection. Increasing the cutout area reduces the effect of the PLI, which results in an increase in the KDF.
This study deals with the nonlinear static analysis of functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) truncated conical shells subjected to axial load based on the classical shell theory. Detailed studies for both nonlinear buckling and post-buckling behavior of truncated conical shells. The truncated conical shells are reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes which alter according to linear functions of the shell thickness. The nonlinear equations are solved by both the Airy stress function and Galerkin method based on the classical shell theory. In numerical results, the influences of various types of distribution and volume fractions of carbon nanotubes, geometrical parameters, elastic foundations on the nonlinear buckling and post-buckling behavior of FG-CNTRC truncated conical shells are presented. The proposed results are validated by comparing with other authors.
In the present study, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used to predict the size-dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect nano-scale piezo-flexomagnetic plate strips in two modes of direct and converse flexomagnetic effects. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used to analyze analytically nano-strips with simply supported boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations of equilibrium and associated boundary conditions are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy with consideration of the von Kármán-type of geometric nonlinearity. A closed-form solution of governing differential equation is obtained, which is easily usable for engineers and designers. To validate the presented formulations, whenever possible, a comparison with the results found in the open literature is reported for buckling loads. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of scaling parameters, plate slenderness ratio, temperature, the mid-plane initial rise, flexomagnetic coefficient, different temperature distributions, and magnetic potential, in case of the converse flexomagnetic effect, on buckling and post-buckling loads in detail.

Despite the high lateral stiffness and strength of the Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF), due to the buckling of its diagonal members, it is not a suitable system in high seismic regions. Among the offered methods to overcome the shortcoming, utilizing a metallic damper is considered as an appropriate idea to enhance the behavior of Concentrically Braced Frames (CBFs). Therefore, in this paper, an innovative steel damper is proposed, which is investigated experimentally and numerically. Moreover, a parametrical study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the mechanism (shear, shear-flexural, and flexural) considering buckling mode (elastic, inelastic, and plastic) on the behavior of the damper. Besides, the necessary formulas based on the parametrical study were presented to predict the behavior of the damper that they showed good agreement with finite element (FE) results. Both experimental and numerical results confirmed that dampers with the shear mechanism in all buckling modes have a better performance than other dampers. Accordingly, the FE results indicated that the shear damper has greater ultimate strength than the flexural damper by 32%, 31%, and 56%, respectively, for plates with elastic, inelastic, and plastic buckling modes. Also, the shear damper has a greater stiffness than the flexural damper by 43%, 26%, and 53%, respectively, for dampers with elastic, inelastic, and plastic buckling modes.

Cytoskeleton components play key role in maintaining cell structure and in giving shape to the cell. These components include microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. Among these filaments intermediate filaments are the most rigid and bear large compressive force. Actually, these filaments are surrounded by other filaments like microtubules and microfilaments. This network of filaments makes a layer as a surface on intermediate filaments that have great impact on buckling behavior of intermediate filaments. In the present article, buckling behavior of intermediate filaments is studied by taking into account the effects of surface by using Euler Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. It is found that effects of surface greatly affect the critical buckling force of intermediate filaments. Further, it is observed that the critical buckling force is inversely proportional to the length of filament. Such types of observations are helpful for further analysis of nanofibrous in their actual environments within the cell.
