This study aimed of effects of replacing maize with rice or brown rice on laying performance, egg quality, and apparent fecal digestibility of nutrient in Hy-Line Brown laying hens. A total of 200, 25-week old Hy-Line Brown laying hens were randomly assigned to one of 5 treatments, each of which was replicated 4 times. Four experimental diets that were formulated two different grains (brown rice or rice) with two inclusion levels of (15 and 30%) as a replacement of maize. The experimental period was 8 weeks. During the experiment, hens were provided with feed and water ad libitum and were exposed to a 16:8=L:D lighting schedule. There were no differences in feed intake, egg weight, and egg mass during the 8 weeks of the feeding trial among groups. However, hen-day egg production was greater (P<0.05) for Brown rice treatment groups than that for basal and rice treatment groups. In addition, the supplementation of brown rice or rice did not have an effect on eggshell strength, eggshell thickness, and HU during of the feeding trial (Table 4). However, egg yolk color was less (P<0.05) for basal treatment groups than that for among treatment group. ATTD of dry matter (DM) and crude fat were greater (P<0.05) for brown rice 15 treatment than for rice 30 treatment. Crude protein (CP) was greater (P<0.05) for brown rice 15 treatment than for basal treatment. In conclusion, brown rice or rice grains is a good alternative energy feedstuff and can be used in laying hens, totally replacing maize, without any negative effect on the laying performance, egg quality, and nutrient digestibility.
The objective of this study was to investigate the line-by-feed additive interaction on egg traits and yolk cholesterol level in laying hens. Hy-line W-98 (white shell line) and Hy-line Brown (brown shell line) were used as experimental stocks and three groups were assigned in each line. The age of hens used in this study were from 40- to 46-wk-old. Two different levels of chitosan were also used as additive in chicken diet. The first (CH$_{30}$) and second (CH$_{60}$) experimental groups were fed basal diet added 30mg and 60mg chitosan/kg feed, respectively. And the control group (CON) hens were fed with basal diet only. The eggs were collected and analyzed at the end of 40, 42, 44, and 46-wk-old. In the mean egg weight, the CH$_{30}$ in Hy-line Brown was significantly heavier (P<0.05) than CON, but the CH$_{30}$ in Hy-line W-98 was significantly lighter (P<0.05) than CON. Whereas, the mean egg weight did not significantly differ between CH$_{60}$ and CON in both line. The mean albumen percentage in Hy-line Brown did not show significant between experimental groups and control group. On the other hand, the mean albumen percentage of CH$_{60}$ in Hy-line W-98 was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that of CON, but there was no significantly different between CH$_{30}$ and CON. In the mean yolk percentage, it showed a reverse trend as shown in the mean albumen percentage; there were significantly higher (P<0.05) in CH$_{60}$ than in CON fur the Hy-line W-98, and higher in CH$_{30}$ than in CON for the Hy-line Brown. However, the mean shell percentages did not significantly differ between experimental groups and control group in both lines. In the mean yolk cholesterol levels, the CH$_{30}$ and CH$_{60}$ in both lines were lower by 0.46 mg ∼2.80 mg per gram yolk than CON. Although the interaction effect of line-by-supplementing level of chitosan in hens diet on the pooled mean of yolk cholesterol level was no significant, it showed a highly significant interaction (P<0.01) at three of four experimental ages.
The objective of this study was to compare the two different eggshell lines of commercial layers on egg traits and egg production rate. Hy-line W-98 (white shell line; WSL) and Hy-line Brown (brown shell line; BSL) were used as experimental stocks. The birds in each line were allocated to three floor pens each containing 25-birds. They were fed a ration containing 15.5% CP and 2,700 ㎉/kg ME, and were supplied 16 h of light per day throughout the experimental Periods. The egg traits and egg Production rate were measured from 53 to 56-wk-old and 20 to 56-wk-old, respectively. The mean egg weight and the mean percentage albumen were significantly heavier and higher (P<0.05) in the BSL than in the WSL, respectively. The mean eggshell thickness and the mean percentage shell were also significantly thicker and higher (P<0.05) in the BSL than those in the WSL, respectively. However, the mean percentage yolk and the yolk to albumen ratio showed a reverse trend as shown in the mean percentage albumen or percentage eggshell. Although the WSL birds started laying 4 d earlier than the BSL ones, the overall mean egg Production rate for BSL during 20 to 56 wk of age was significantly higher (P<0.05) by 6.6% than the WSL. It was concluded that the eggs of brown eggshell line had heavier egg weight and thicker shell, and they had more percentage of albumen, but less percentage of yolk than those of the white eggshell line. These results suggest that the brown eggshell line raised on the floor might be more beneficial than the white eggshell line not only for the preference of the table egg consumers, but also for the efficient production of the eggs.
An on-line algorithm that discriminates brown rice kernels on their echelon feeder using color image processing is presented for quality inspection. A rapid color image segmentation algorithm based on Bayesian clustering method was developed by means of the look-up table which was made from the significant clusters selected by experts. A robust estimation method was presented to improve the stability of color clusters. Discriminant analysis of color distributions was employed to distinguish nine types of brown rice kernels. Discrimination accuracies of the on-line discrimination algorithm were ranged from 72% to 85% for the sound, cracked, green-transparent and green-opaque, greater than 93% for colored, red, and unhulled, about 92% for white-opaque and 67% for chalky, respectively.
This study was conducted to select resistant chicken-line between Brown and White layer lines against Salmonella gallinarum infection. The Brown and White layer chickens allocated into different age groups were inoculated with S gallinarum (WJO-126) either orally($1{\times}10^7cfu$) or intramusculaly($5{\times}10^6cfu$) and clinical observations were made for 2 weeks. All dead birds were necropsied and culture was made to recover the inoculated organinsm from liver, spleen, brain, bone marrow and cecal contents. Serum was isolated from all live birds after 2 weeks experiment and these birds were also necropsied and cultured to reisolate S gallinarum. The brown layers showed very high mortality to S gallinarum infection regardless of their ages and routes of inoculation, while white layers did not shown any mortality by the direct effects of S gallinarum. The mortality rate of 2 week old brown layers, in particular, were 82.6% (19/23) in peroral group and 86.9% in intramuscularly inoculated group, while those of white layer groups were only 0.0% in both groups. S gallinarum could be reisolated from all dead birds, especially, from liver and spleen. This result was inferred that the organism is highly invasive on the chicken. The intramuscularly challenged birds showed more seropositive-reactors(86.9%) than orally inoculated groups(61.9%). The overall results of present study suggested that white layers are much more resistant than brown layers against the experimental infection of S gallinarum and shown experimentally that resistance to S gallinarum is a characteristic of the White-line layers.
Objective: Few studies have genetically monitored chickens over time, and no research has been conducted on ducks. To ensure the sustainable management of key duck breeds, we used microsatellite markers to monitor Brown Tsaiya ducks over time genetically. Methods: The second, fourth, sixth to eighth generations of the Brown Tsaiya duck selected for feeding efficiency and control lines were included in this study to investigate the genetic variations, effective population size, population structure and the differentiation between populations over time with 11 microsatellite markers derived from Brown Tsaiya duck. Results: The results showed there were a slight decrease in the genetic variations and an increase in within-population inbreeding coefficient (FIS) in both lines, but no consistent increase in FIS was observed in each line. The effective population size in the second and eighth generations was 27.2 for the selected line and 23.9 for the control line. The change in allele richness showed a downward trend over time, and the selected line was slightly lower than the control line in each generation. The number of private alleles (Np) in the selected line were higher than in the control line. Moderate differentiation was observed between the second and eighth generations in the selected line (FST = 0.0510) and the control line (FST = 0.0606). Overall, differentiation tended to increase with each generation, but genetic variation and structure did not change considerably after six generations in the two lines. Conclusion: This study provides a reference for poultry conservation and helps to implement cross-generation genetic monitoring and breeding plans in other duck breeds or lines to promote sustainable management.
Three panel trammel nets were made illegal for the brown shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) or fishes by Korean fisheries law while trammel nets for fleshy prawn in the West sea remained legal. In this study a single panel tangle net with vertical loop lines rigged between the float line and sinker line was specially designed to catch brown shrimp. This net was developed for the first time after observation of the brown shrimp behaviour when reacting to a net in an observation tank. In field experiments these single tangle nets were compared with the traditional trammel nets in the coastal waters of the Keoje area. The mean number of the brown shrimp for 53 fishing operations was 1.13 per unit panel of the single tangle nets when fitted with the vertical loop lines. This was $84\%$ of the mean catch of 1.36 achieved with the trammel nets. These results of fishing experiments using single tangle nets in the field revealed a high fishing efficiency for the brown shrimp and showed little difference from trammel nets. The size of the brown shrimp or number of by-catch was not different between single tangle nets and trammel nets.

A number of evidence have been accumulated that the regulation of reversible tyrosine phosphorylation, which can be regulated by the combinatorial activity of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) and protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), plays crucial roles in various biological processes including differentiation. There are a total of 107 PTP genes in the human genome, collectively referred to as the "PTPome." In this study, we performed PTP profiling analysis of the HIB-1B cell line, a brown preadipocyte cell line, during brown adipogenesis. Through RT-PCR and real-time PCR, several PTPs showing differential expression pattern during brown adipogenesis were identified. In the case of PTP-RE, it was shown to decrease significantly until 4 days after brown adipogenic differentiation, followed by a dramatic increase at 6 days. The overexpression of PTP-RE led to decreased brown adipogenic differentiation via reducing the tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor, indicating that PTP-RE functions as a negative regulator at the early stage of brown adipogenesis.
Here, we report three new arctiine moths for the first time in Korea, Siccia shikatai Kishida, Nudaria ranruna Matsumura, and Pelosia angusta (Staudinger). Siccia shikatai is distinguished by grayish forewings with a thick and blackish antemedial line, a thin, dark brown and dentate postmedial line and a black <-shaped discal spot and grayish hindwing with a dark brown discal dot. Nudaria ranruna is distinguished by the whitish fore- and hindwings and a large, blackish discal dot and thick medial lines on the forewing. Pelosia angusta is distinguished by dark grayish fore- and hindwings and a thick, dark brown, curved medial line on the forewing.
Two ennomine species, Amblychia angeronaria Guen$\acute{e}$e and Peratostega deletaria (Moore), are reported for the first time from Korea. Amblychia angeronaria was collected from Isl. Gageo-do, in the south west of Korea. The species is distinguished by the large wingspan, the ochreous forewing with a row of large white dots on the postmedian and a grayish apical dot, and the grayish or dark ochreous hindwing with undulating postmedial line and dark grayish subterminal line. Peratostega deleraia was collected from Isl. Jeju-do, and can be distinguished by the dark brown forewing with a blackish dentate postmedian and a light brown apical dot, and the dark brown hindwing with the light brown subtermen and angulate termen. Diagnosis and description of the species are given along with figures of the male and female genitalia.
