  • Using Social Network Analysis and Trade in Value Added Database(TiVA), this paper examines the world trade network. Main findings are as follows. Firstly, there are three types of industries, which have dominant status in the world value added trade network. Those are the manufacturing industries in the developing countries such as China's electronics industry, the service industries in the developed countries such as U.S. R&D, and the manufacturing industries in the developed countries such as German motor vehicle industry. Secondly, the major hub industries in the world trade network have their own specific types in the brokerage roles. Most interestingly, U.S. service industries such as the R&D, the logistics industry, and the whole sale and retail industry reveal itinerant and liaison brokerage roles. Thirdly, Korean industries have been dominated by Chinese industries. However, the financial industry and the R&D industry could have revealed superior status as the brokerage role of itinerant. This implies Korean industries could sustain their competitiveness of the hubness status only by openness policy in the service industry.

  • While industrial ecology theories and policy approaches have been considerably influential in regional economy, the dynamism and limitations of regional venture ecosystem are less clearly examined. In particular, the activities of strategic network brokerage require further research in relation to its internal and external interactions and collaborative mechanisms. Based on the analysis results of conditions of Daegu Gyeongbuk regional venture firms, this article examines the necessities of strategic network brokerage in regional venture ecosystem in the dimensions of network conditions as the intrinsic limitations, of innovation direction method outcome as the extrinsic trends, and of the related regional demands. In particular, this article tries to explore the roles and activity scopes of strategic network brokerage to contribute for making up for the weakness of diverse network infrastructures of regional venture ecosystem, for dealing with the mismatch for the extrinsic change trends of industrial technologies, and for fulfilling the strengthening trends of intrinsic capacities.

  • This paper aims to construct and analyze the domestic collaborative research network in industrial engineering. Using co-authorship information contained in the papers published in the two journals of the Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers, the collaborate research network at the institutional level is constructed. The core institutions in the network are identified by means of the centrality indexes of social network analysis. In addition, the five types of roles of the institutions in industry-university-institute cooperation are examined through brokerage analysis: coordinator, consultant, gatekeeper, representative, and liaisons. The findings are expected to be fruitfully utilized in formulation of R&D strategy of relevant organizations and technology policy making for promoting collaborative research in industrial engineering.

  • This study aims to analyze and compare centrality and brokerage measures of journal citation network focusing on textmining research. The analytic sample was 193 academic articles collected from 136 KCI journals published in 2018. The journal citation network was constructed based on citation relations. The characteristics, centralities, and brokerages of network was analyzed. The journal citation network consisted 136 nodes and 413 links with directed and weight. According to the five types of centrality(out-degree, in-degree, out-closeness, in-closeness, betweenness), journals of social sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary research showed higher centrality. Social sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary research journals also showed higher brokerages as a result of brokerage analysis which identify five types of brokerage roles(coordinator, gatekeeper, representative, consultant, liaison). The centralities and brokerages of journals are positively correlated. This study suggested how to construct journal citation network from the articles focusing on certain topics. This was meaningful study in terms of conducting brokerage analysis and comparing it with centrality in the journal citation network.

  • This paper investigates how Kora steel industry has experienced technological diversification, organizational flexibility, and geographical dispersion, and analyzes how technology-knowledge network has formed. The network is constructed using mutual patent data. K-medoid clustering and brokerage analysis are applied. The results indicate actors in network are diversified and links between those who belong to the same cluster get stronger. Network formation reflects affiliation, competition, and cooperation in the industry, and brokerage roles of conglomerates, research institute, and small and medium sized companies are detected.

  • Interdisciplinary convergence research is widely seen as a collaborative research between different disciplines, which is often driven by common agenda or problems in pursuit of a particular common objective. Thus, the purpose of interdisciplinary cooperation in convergence research is to bring each discipline's unique perspective together with the academic expertise of researchers in order to share common problems that cannot be solved effectively without research partnership. We present empirical evidence on how interdisciplinary research relationships are formed to facilitate research networking in convergence relations. In particular, we used network analysis to investigate how interdisciplinary linkages and convergence research networks has formed over time. We found that the convergence research networks were implemented by the interdisciplinary convergence research support program as intended. We did find that research field with high indegree and outdegree in a network played critical roles on the dynamics and degree of interdisciplinarity. Finally, we could find evidence that the role of liaison brokers triggered relational dynamics in interdisciplinary research collaboration.

  • In order to suggest alternative directions for the regional development of Chungcheongbukdo through social network analysis (SNA) methods, this study highlights networking features of Chungcheongbukdo-based top 300 enterprises. In particular, it has paid attention to network relationships among participating enterprises and their basic structure, all of which play pivotal roles in provincial development. Major networking features among Chungcheongbukdo-based top 300 enterprises are dichotomized between structural and positional dimensions. Firstly, in terms of structural approach, this research confirms that both relational density indices and average connectivity levels among key enterprises have been extremely low. Therefore, the exchange networks seem relatively limited. That is, two enterprises could be interconnected after 1.1 stages in average, implying that the most popular types come from direct relationship among participating enterprises. In addition, this research finds that 7 major networks hinged upon 'distributed centralization types' present active information exchange, taking in charge of brokerage roles, all of which have contributed to broader network formation. Nonetheless, as the weight of minor network outweighs that of major network, more active supporting measures should be designed.
