  • Steel plate or fiber composite plate are mainly used in externally bonding method. Shear strengthening by externally bonding method is to confirm shear safety and to avoid brittle failure. In case of strengthening by externally bonding method, a failure of structure occurs frequently due to delamination between strengthening plate and concrete. Therefore, it is important to consider the delamination in the strengthening design. The objective of this study is to propose a modified shear strength evaluation by considering the delamination. The delamination criteria of strengthening plate is established by the ultimate strain and shear stress. And shear strength of RC beams is proposed in terms of the delamination criteria. The proposed shear strength is compared with test results and verified through the comparison.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) strips have superior mechanical and chemical properties in comparison with conventional materials. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical shear behavior of concrete structures strengthened by CFRP strips A total of 15 concrete members were made and tested. Shear span to depth ratio(a/d) and the spacing of CFRP stripswere selected as major test variables. From test results, it isshown that shear strengthening with CFRP strips can increase the first shear strength and ultimate shear strength of concrete members significantly. And the brittle shear failure mode can be changed to a ductile failure mode by CFRP strips.

  • The failure modes of rock anchors subjected to tension can be defined as follows: tensile failure of tendon, shear failure on tendon-grout interface, shear failure on grout-rock interface and tensile failure of rock. This study proposes a design method to induce the rock anchor systems to avoid the brittle failure by ensuring the minimum embedded length of rock anchors. Pull-out test results of full-scale rock anchors show that the proposed method is effective in predicting the design conditions expecting the ductile tendon failure.

  • Six reinforced concrete shear wall, constructured with fully rigid, slit, and infilled types, were tested under both vertical and cyclic loadings. Experimental programs were carried out to evaluate the seismic performance of such test specimens, such as the hysteretic behavior, the maximum horizontal strength, crack propagation, and ductility, under load reversals. All the specimens were modeled in one-third scale size. Based on the test results, the following conclusions can be made. For the diagonal reinforced slit and infilled shear wall specimens, it was found that the failure mode shows very effective crack control and crushing due to slippage prevention of boundary region and reduction of diagonal tension rathar than the brittle shear and diagonal tension failure. The ductility of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement for the slit and infilled shear wall was increased 1.72~1.81 times in comparison with the fully rigid shear wall frame. Maximum horizontal load-carrying capacity of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement ratio the slit and infilled shear wall was increased respectively by l.14 times and l.49 times in comparison with the standard fully rigid shear wall frame.

  • In R.C. flat slab system, a brittle punching failure is a very fatal problem. But there is no generally well-defined answer to the problem and there are wide differences in current practical design codes. therefore, in this study, the factors affecting to punching failure mechanism have been studied to find out the punching shear behavior in R.C. flat slabs by comparing other investigations and practical design codes. Therefore, In this study, the factors affecting to punching failure mechanism have been studied to find out the punching shear behavior in R.C. flat slabs by comparing other investigations and practical design codes. The conclusions in this study are summarized as follows; 1) The factors affecting to punching shear are concrete strength ($f_\alpha$), ratio of column side length to slab depth (c/d), ratio of distance from column center to radial contraflexure (l/d), yield strength of steel ($f_y$), flexural reinforcement ratio ($\rho$) and size effects. 2) It is shown that th use of $\surd{f_{ck}}$in applying($f_\alpha$ to punching shear strength estimation may be more sensitive in high concrete strength. 3) The effects of l/d, ($f_y$, size are no clear in the punching failure mechanism, so in the future, it should be investigated with the effects of various composed load.

  • Results of an experimental investigation on the behavior and ultimate shear capacity of 27 reinforced concrete Transfer (deep) beams are summarized. The main variables were percent longitudinal(tension) steel (0.28 to 0.60%), percent horizontal web steel (0.60 to 2.40%), percent vertical steel (0.50to 2.25%), percent orthogonal web steel, shear span-to-depth ratio (1.10 to 3.20) and cube concrete compressive strength (32 MPa to 48 MPa).The span of the beam has been kept constant at 1000 mm with100 mm overhang on either side of the supports. The result of this study shows that the load transfer capacity of transfer (deep) beam with distributed longitudinal reinforcement is increased significantly. Also, the vertical shear reinforcement is more effective than the horizontal reinforcement in increasing the shear capacity as well as to transform the brittle mode of failure in to the ductile mode of failure. It has been observed that the orthogonal web reinforcement is highly influencing parameter to generate the shear capacity of transfer beams as well as its failure modes. Moreover, the results from the experiments have been processed suitably and presented an analytical model for design of transfer beams in high-rise buildings for estimating the shear capacity of beams.

  • An experimental program was performed to study the effects of cement stabilization on the geotechnical characteristics of sandy soils. Stabilizing agent included lime Portland cement, and was added in percentages of 2.5, 5 and 7.5% by dry weight of the soils. An analysis of the mechanical behavior of the soil is performed from the interpretation of results from unconfined compression tests and direct shear tests. Cylindrical and cube samples were prepared at optimum moisture content and maximum dry unit weight for unconfined compression and direct shear tests, respectively. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days after which they were tested. Based on the experimental investigations, the utilization of cemented specimens increased strength parameters, reduced displacement at failure, and changed soil behavior to a noticeable brittle behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss how strength and ductility of each system in low-rise R/C buildings combined with extremely brittle, shear and flexural failure systems have influence on seismic capacities of the overall system, which is based on seismic response analysis of SDOF structural systems. To simulate the triple lateral-load resisting system, structures are idealized as a parallel combination of two modified origin-oriented hysteretic models and degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fail primarily in extremely brittle, shear and flexure, respectively. Stiffness properties of three models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients, and structures are subjected to two ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of required strengths of the triple systems for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes.

  • Recently, many researchers have performed R&D about strengthening of R/C with steel plates, carbon fiber sheets. aramid fiber sheets and glass fiber sheets, and so on. However most of research were limited in study of flexural strengthening of R/C beams. This paper shows the results of an experimental study on shear reinforcement of deep beams using Glass Fiber Sheet in relation to shear-span ratio. strengthening orientation and anchorage. The results prove that shear failure is governed by reinforced orientation. adherence and anchorage. Additional anchorage of fibers does not only cause the improvement in the internal resistance, but also control the brittle shear failure of specimen after reaching the maximum load.

  • The R/C flat plate system provides architectural flexibility, clear space, reduced building height, simple formwork, which consequently enhance constructibility. One of the serious problems in the flat plate system is brittle punching shear failure due to transfer of shear force and unbalanced moments in column-slab joint. Recently, the flat plate system accompanied with shear walls to resist the lateral loads is applied to high-rise buidings. Although the flat plate system is not considered in design as part of the lateral load-resisting system, it is required that this system keeps the ductile behavior for the lateral displacement of the building. However, it is unclear whether the column-slab joint possesses ductility enough to survive the lateral deformation. The objective of this paper is to investigate the major parameters that influence the ductility of R/C flat plate system by examining the existing experiments on column-slab joint. The effects of gravity load and shear reinforcement on the ductility of the flat plate system are presented.
