  • Single point diamond turning technique fur optical crystals is reported in this paper. The main factors influencing the machined surface quality are discovered and regularities of machining process are drawn. Optical crystals have found more and more important applications in the field of modern optics. Optical crystals are mostly brittle materials of poor machinability. The traditional machining method is polishing which has many shortcomings such as low production efficiency, poor ability to be automatically controlled and edge effect of the workpiece. SPDT has been widely used in manufacturing optical reflectors of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper which are easy to be machined for their proper ductility. But optical crystals being discussed here are characterized by their high brittleness which makes it difficult to obtain high quality optical surfaces on them. The purpose of cur research is to find the optimum machining conditions for ductile cutting of optical crystals and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of brittle materials. As a result, the cutting force is steady, the cutting force range is 0.05-0.08N. The surface roughness is good when spindle is above 1400rpm. and feed rate is small. The influence of depth of cut is very small.

  • A clear understanding of the surface formation mechanism due to cutting is very important to help produce a good quality surface. Much of the roughness along the length of a bar being cut in a lathe can be explained in terms of macroscopic tool shape and feed rate. However, the roughness along the direction of cutting requires a different explanation. The formation of surface roughness is a problem in flow and fracture of materials in the vicinity of the tool edge. On a microscopic scale the cutting edge is rounded because it is impossible to grind a perfectly sharp cutting edge. Even if a perfectly sharp cutting edge were obtained it would soon become dull as a result of rapid breakdown and wear of the cutting edge. A research project is proposed in which in the main object is to model the surface formation mechanism due to cutting. The tool was assumed to be dull, that is, its edge has a finite radius. In order to study the effect of the radius of cutting edge on the surface formation, tools having different cutting edges were used. For orthogonal cutting experiment, cast iron and glass were chosen as brittle materials. Plowing forces acting in the cutting edge were estimated and its effect on the surface roughness was studied by observing the machined surface using optical microscope.

  • Glass is one of brittle materials. Generally, brittle material is weak for tensile stress but strong for compression stress. Laser breaking of glass used this brittle characteristics. Laser breaking of glass was simulated to optimize breaking condition by using commercial FEM code MARC which is applicable to thermo-mechanical coupling analysis. Various shapes of heat sources were applied to the analysis and the distance between heating and cooling source were varied for each simulation. The shapes of heat sources were circle, single and double ellipse and the distance was varied from 0mm to 30mm. Moving heat sources were designed on the basis of experimental condition. As a result, double elliptic shape of heat source was the most suitable among them in laser breaking of glass. And it should be useful to determine optimal condition of laser breaking for glass.

  • In general, lithography techniques are applied when machining single-crystal silicon in nanoscale applications; however, these techniques involve low degrees of freedom for the vertical shapes. By applying mechanical techniques to machine silicon, nanopatterns having various types of vertical shapes can be manufactured. In this study, we determined the ductile-brittle machining transition point and analyzed the- variation of the specific cutting resistance within the ductile machining region in nanoscale applications. When brittle fracture occurred during the nanoscale cutting, the depth of cut and cutting force increased and decreased rapidly, respectively. The first point of rapid increase in the depth of cut was defined as the ductile-brittle machining point. Subsequently, the shape of the machining tool was observed using a scanning electron microscope to calibrate the machining area, considering the tip blunting. The specific cutting resistance decreased continuously and converged to a certain value during the nanoscale cutting. The decrease and convergence in the value can be attributed to the decrease in the ratio of the arc length to the area of the machining tool and silicon.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of punching process of brittle material by ball impact, the effects of sealing materials about impact damage of soda-lime glass by small spheres were evaluated experimentally. The using of sealing materials in the development of perfect cone crack was more effective than no using of sealing materials. At the sealing materials condition, in the case of 5mm-thick specimen, Copper and PMMA sealing were more effective in producing a perfect cone formation than the other sealing materials. And in the case of 8mm-thick specimen, Aluminum sealing was most effective in producing a perfect cone formation. The impact velocity range over which perfect cones were formed was influenced by both the thickness of specimen and sealing materials. By a proper selection of sealing materials, the application fur industrial technology for hole (or nozzle) punching process of brittle materials is expected.

  • The effect of high shear speed on shear force, shear energy and fracture surface was investigated for the solder joint of a $Sn-_{3.0}Ag-_{0.5}Cu$ ball. For both ENIG and OSP pads, the shear force increased with an increase in shearing speed to 0.3 m/s. However, for an ENEPIG pad, the shear force increased with an increase in shear speed to 0.6 m/s and kept almost constant afterward. The shear energy decreased with an increase in shearing speed for ENIG and OSP pads. For the ENEPIG pad, however, the shear energy almost remained constant in a shearing speed range 0.3-3.0 m/s. The fracture mode analysis revealed that the amount of brittle fracture for the ENIG and the OSP pads increased with shearing speed, and a complete brittle fracture appeared at 1.0 m/s for ENIG and 2.0 m/s for OSP. However, the ENEPIG pad showed only a ductile fracture until 0.25 m/s, and a full brittle fracture didn't occur up to 3.0 m/s. The fracture mode matched well with the shear energy. The results from the high speed shear test of SAC305 were similar to those of SAC105.

  • The special purposed materials, such as ceramics and stainless steel, are widely used in the various industrial area. They have properties of the higher strength of material, the wear-resistance, and the corrosion proof. But ceramics is a difficult-to-grind material which possesses the higher level of a strength and a brittleness. In this study, the theoretical investigation of a grinding force and of a surface roughness was conducted. The evaluations of grinding characteristics on the hardened-brittle and difficult-to-grind materials were experimentally carried out.

  • Micron size Co-alloy 800 (T800) powder is coated on the high temperature, oxidation and corrosion resistant super alloy Inconel 718 substrate by the optimal high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process developed by this laboratory. For the study of durability improvement of high speed spindle operating without lubricants, friction and sliding wear behaviors of the coatings are investigated both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. Friction coefficients, wear traces and wear debris of coatings are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrate both at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. Friction coefficients and wear traces of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at higher temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. At high temperature, the brittle oxides such as CoO, $Co_{3}O_{4}$, $MoO_2$ and $MoO_3$ are formed rapidly on the sliding surfaces, and the brittle oxide phases are easily attrited by reciprocating slides at high temperature through oxidation and abrasive wear mechanisms. The brittle solid oxide particles, softens, melts and partial-melts play roles as solid and liquid lubricants reducing friction coefficient and wear. These show that the coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement coating on the machine component surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the mechanical property and ductile-brittle transition temperature of Ti-Nb-P added extra low carbon interstitial free steel having a tensile strength of 440 MPa. The mechanical property and transition temperature of hot rolled steel sheets were more influenced by the coiling temperature rather than by the small amount of alloying element. Further, at the same composition, the property of the specimen coiled at low temperature was superior to that obtained at higher coiling temperature. The fracture surface of 0.005C-0.2Si-1.43Mn steel coiled at $630^{\circ}C$ showed a ductile fracture mode at $-100^{\circ}C$, but coiling at $670^{\circ}C$ showed a transgranular brittle fracture mode at $-90^{\circ}C$. The galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel sheet annealed at $810^{\circ}C$ has tensile strength and elongation of 442.8 MPa and $36.6\%$, respectively. The transition temperature of galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel sheet was increased with a drawing ratio, and the transition temperature of the galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel was $-60^{\circ}C$ at a drawing ratio of 1.8
