  • Concrete is one of the principal materials for the structure and it is widely used all over the world. but it shows extremely brittle failure under bending and tensile load. Recently to improve such a poor property. High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC) have been developed. and it are defined by an ultimate strength higher than their first cracking strength and the formation of multiple cracking during the inelastic deformation process. This study is to develop the hybrid HPFRCC with high ductility and strain capacity in bending and tensile load. and the three-point bending test on hybrid HPRFCC reinforced with micro and macro fibers is carried out in this paper. As the results of the bending tests. hybrid HPFRCCs reinforced with PVA40+SF and PVA100+PVA660 showed the high ultimate bending stress, multiple cracks and displacement hardening under bending load.

  • The use of low-ductility welded wire fabric (WWF) as a main tensile reinforcement in concrete slabs compromises the ductility of concrete structures. Lower ductility in concrete structures can lead to brittle and catastrophic failure of the structures. This paper presents the experimental study carried out on eight simply supported one-way slabs to study the structural behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with low-ductility WWF and steel fibers. The different types of steel fibers used were crimped fiber, hooked-end fiber and twincone fiber. The experimental results show that the ductility behavior of the slab specimens with low-ductility reinforcement was significantly improved with the inclusion of $40kg/m^3$ of twincone fiber. Distribution of cracks was prominent in the slabs with twincone fiber, which also indicates the better distribution of internal forces in these slabs. However, the slab reinforced only with low-ductility reinforcement failed catastrophically with a single minor crack and without appreciable deflection.

  • Slender structures like reinforced concrete (RC) chimneys are severely damaged or collapsed during severe wind storms or strong ground motions all over the world. Today, with the improvement in technology and industry, most factories need these slender structures with increasing height and decreasing in shell thickness causing vulnerable to winds and earthquakes. Main objectives in this study are to make structural wind and earthquake analysis of RC chimneys by using a well-known international standard CICIND 2001 and real recorded time history accelerations and to clarify weak points of these tall and slender structures against these severe natural actions. Findings of this study show that maximum tensile stress and shear stress approximately increase 103.90% and 312.77% over or near the openings on the body of the RC chimneys that cause brittle failure around this region of openings.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the strength characteristics of frozen clay. Compressive strength tests were performed on frozen clay with different water contents at various temperatures. The dry density of specimens and strain rate was kept constant. Test results showed that compressive strength increased with increasing water content and decreasing temperature. The increase in peak strength became more significant the lower the temperature for a given water content. The failure mode changed from brittle to ductile deformation with increasing water content and decreasing temperature. Tests also showed an increase in deformation modulus with increasing peak strength, increasing water content and decreasing temperature.

  • A flat plate-column connection is susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in the necessity of shear reinforcement. In present study, experimental tests were performed to study the capacity of slab-column connections strengthened with lattice, stud rail, shear band and stirrup under gravity and cyclic lateral load. Among them, the capacity of the specimens with lattice are superior to the others due to the truss action of the lattice bars and dowel action of the longitudinal bars as well as the shear resistance of the web re-bar. On the other hand, the strengths of the specimens with stud rail, shear band and stirrup are lower than the estimated strength by the ACI, therefore design formulas of the ACI are needed to revise.

  • An experimental study was carried out to examine the structural behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with aramid fiber sheets, carbon fiber sheets and plates, and to propose the reasonable strengthening method for the deteriorated R.C. deep beams. Results show that the most significant differences in behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with fiber sheet and plate were mainly due to various fiber orientations and anchorage. Deep beams diagonally strengthened with carbon fibers show better performance compared with those of vertically, horizontally strengthened specimens and produce the increase in the shear resistance through the redistribution of internal forces after the initial cracks occur. However, strengthened deep beams without anchorages might show unreasonable, brittle peeling-off failure of fiber reinforcements.

  • In modern society, population overcrowding and concentration of facilities are happened because of the concentration on to city. So this phenomenon demands improvement of material's performance, technical development of structure analysis and design and improvement of constructing ability .High strength concrete has some merits. High strengthening makes the cross section reduced, and that cause decrease of structure weight. And using high durable and superplasticizer promote liquidity, thus high quality concrete can be produced. Because of these advantages, this study is for showing validity of using it by compression/tensile strength experiment. As this experiment's result, when concrete become stronger, interface intensity coefficient between cement and aggregate is different and they don't adhere to each other. So there is brittle failure. Fragility factor also steadily increase with strong concrete, it tells high strength concrete has problem. Therefore the sources used in high strength concrete like cement and aggregate must have great quality. So the source's performance must be supervised well because their quality decides performance criteria.

  • In flat-plate floors, slab-column connections are broken down with a brittle shear failure. And it can cause the collapse of the whole structures. Thus, the proper method of shear reinforcement in flat plate-column connections must be required. The objective of this study is to compare shear reinforcement specimens using lattice bars to no shear reinforcement specimens in view of shear strength and ductility of the flat plate-column connections. The test results have shown that shear reinforcement specimens varying $\rho$, $b_0$/d and $C_1$/$C_2$ increase in shear strength by 36.85% and in ductility by 9.16 for no shear reinforcement specimens on the average. This results confirm the effectiveness of this type of shear reinforcement in improving shear strength and ductility.

  • In order to extend the life time of building and civil infra-structure, nowadays, patch type carbon sheets are widely used as repairing meterials. Repaired concrete columns and beams with carbon sheets gain their stiffness and strength, but they lose toughness and show brittle failure behaviors. Usually, the cracks of concrete structures are visible with naked eyes and the status of the structure in the life cycle is estimated with visible inspection. After repairing of the structure, crack visibility is blocked by repaired carbon sheets. Therefore, structural monitoring after repairing is indispensible and self diagnosis method with optical fiber sensor is very useful. In this paper, peel-out effects is detected with optical fiber sensors and the strain difference between main structure and repaired carbon sheets when they separate each other.

  • Put Many researcher have made much progress in studying an estimate for fracture probability of brittle materials. However, studies of the fracture probability for the elastic-plasticity have not been made yet. An estimate method for fracture probability which is grafted onto 2-parameter criterion and statistical probability analysis is not only introduced in this study, but also applied to the simple 2dimensional model and carbon steel piping to evaluate the effect of random variable.
